''I defy you stars.'' - Romeo, Act 5 Scne 1 (14:04) 9. ''Star crossed lovers'' - Prologue (14:57) 10. ''Deny thy father and refuse thy name.'' - Juliet, Ac 2 Scene 2 (16:22) Hope this help :)
the 2nd quote : 'that which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet' is actually said by Juliet, referencing the fact that the names of things do not affect what they really are (a rose would still possess beauty even if it were called something different) hence the Capulet name she is born with, or the Montague name Romeo possesses are meaningless and should not prevent the two 'starcrossed lovers' from being together and so Juliet criticises Elizabethan society and the unnecessary conflict which has arisen between the households
@@adam274 i think it’s because the society forced upon them an image that the father of the house rules and is allowed to order around his wife and daughter, so she is criticising that the image her father is burdened with is in the way of her love for romeo because she can’t choose to marry him on her own (in public) and she needs the agreement of her father but he won’t give it to her because he didn’t pick the man and it isn’t her place to say.
The quotation: ‘love is heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold, sick and healthy, asleep and wake - it’s everything except what it is!’ Is the modern translation. The original quotation is: ‘feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health, still-waking sleep, that it is not what it is!’. You cannot quite the modern translation in the exam so use the Shakespeare original version.
‘Juliet is the Sun’ Light imagery = J is a symbol of hope, positivity J is a guide for R. Sun, light = source of life. Suggests he can’t live without her - foreshadowing Metaphor - shows R’s admiration and attraction to her Context: Elizabethan people thought the Sun ‘ruled’ the planets. Implies Romeo is ‘ruled’ and overcome by J J seems strong, powerful Gender stereotypes subverted. R = admiring, worshipping J = strong, powerful, influential R is blinded by his love for Juliet Sun connotations of astronomy- link to theme of fate. Links R + J + fate together... foreshadowing? R is obsessed with J, elevates her to otherworldly, supernatural level Foreshadows how their relationship is short-lasting Sun only lasts a day -> fleeting, passionate
u could also emphasise on the word 'sun' as something that holds value so i mean that the way average people cannot live without the 'sun' same way romeo cant live without juliet so the the connotation of sun may depict the love between them as romeo cannot live with out juliet resulting in his tragic death of bieng desperate to forever be with juliet he defines the fate of the big star 'sun' and therefore he decides he has the right to change the output of the sonnet and as he is the protagonist he will then decide how the story really goes down not knowing juliet isnt actually dead therefore meaning when its dark [mentality] he cant see the suns appearance even tho its there which means the 'sun' he reffered juliet as was not bieng shown through the dark void left in his mind he let his steariotypical patrachan love for juliet fuel his naive and quick thinking actions which is also show when he frst meets juliet and is so infactuated and naive he decides he marries a girl even when restricted therefore showing how his disobediance can be spread throughout as this was the cause of juliet rejecting her fathers wishes to marry paris as paris is so delude of love he dies for juliets unrequited love as shown at the ending ''stop thy unhallowed toil , vile montague can vengence be persuide further than death?''

Thank you so much man.i did my gcse today with no other revision other than this one video because I didn't have the energy and wrote double than everyone else and truly believe I did amazing on the paper
It is the east and Juliet is the sun. It shows the eternal relationship between sun and the east.the east here is romeo and the sun is juliet.ut refers to the eternal love between romeo and Juliet .the sun never set in the east.no sun without east and no east without sun🌞 Juliet is the sun who makes everything bright who gives life to the east
Watched both your Romeo and Juliet and Jekyll and Hyde videos. I have my GCSE tomorrow, and you’ve saved me!! These descriptions and analysis are amazing and so well presented. So grateful for these, thank you !!
Just want to say this video is really helping me as I have mocks in one week and is giving me an idea of what Romeo and Juliet as a play is very structural and methodical and is helping me with understanding the play. SO thank you @Mr Everything English
@Mr Everything English could you quickly make this type of video for The sign of four as there is very less resources for the sign of four and it would be very helpful for u to make one
Thanks Sir very helpful my favourite quote is "the sweetest honey is loathsome in its own delicious" this could show I guess that their love has to much quantity as delicious could lead to eating to much like how Rome and Juliet love each other to much.
capulet is FAR from a victim of the patrichary 😭😭 juliet is, he forces her to suffer the effects of the patriarchy by abiding by the patriarchy’s rules (arranged marriage, womens rights etc)
Hi, For the 2nd quote (4:20) ‘that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet’ you said Romeo said it but I checked the play and doesn’t Juliet say it? Surely this changes the analysis as ‘rose’ no longer references Rosaline…?
Yes, it is Juliet's line. The quote sees Juliet suggesting that it does not matter that Romeo is from her family's rivals - house of Montagues. She is saying that even if a rose has a different name it would still have its beautiful scent. The names Montague and Capulet are extremely important in the world of the play, but Juliet cuts through this by suggesting that whichever one of those you are, is unimportant. This is one of the most profound lines from the play and shows the audience that despite her young years, Juliet is actually very intelligent.
Advice to anyone, me personally i have had one window with a word document summarising everything he said down for my two plays coming up on my paper, I'm going to revise this material and interpretation and I think this is a good way of revising. Good luck
Can someone tell me how is this "the only 10 quotes you need the learn", if you go look at past papers some of these quotes don't fit for certain questions so what do you do?
Hi Sir. Can you please go over AQA power and conflict poems with grade 9 easy quotes and with good analysis. My EXAM ARE IN 3 WEEKS!! Could you please do a video on this? Thank you!!!!
because i assume the plague stops the message from being received about Juliet by Romeo, so Balthasar ends up delivering a different message presuming Juliet is de@d when she was really just in a basic long sleep so romeo kills himself with po!son in the tomb affecting his family then juliet st@bs herself with Romeos we@pon k!ling herself so that affects her family.... That's how i see it!!!
its 'feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health, still waking sleep, that it is not what it is' on act 1 scene 1 page 10 , i think the quote he put up was a modern translation
-Agree or disagree with statement -Give evidence (quotes or reference) (evidence to do with the statement) -Talk about the language methods used (noun, adjective, verb, adverb, similie, metaphor) -Talk about what it makes you realise and link to the statement I got grade 3 so idk if im the best at giving advice
I wouldn't recommend explicitly calling that quote a volta, since it is a turning point for the whole play. It isn't really applicable because voltas are largely specific to sonnets in particular. However, you can very easily draw a comparison with that as a turning point - you'll get your marks for structure and one or two for context if you can manage to link it to Shakespeare's own sonnets. Something along the lines of: "Mercutio's dying words, 'a plague o' both your houses', mark a sharp turning point for the plot and tone of the play - much like that of a volta in Shakespeare's traditional romantic sonnets." Good luck!
