How do you do seven pages, is it that you write many paragraphs or write a lot per paragraph and how do you write that much in 45 mins(apart from writing speed) is it that you know everything before the exam or you're that guy who has alot of ideas in the exam
@Justarandominternetperson
@Justarandominternetperson 6 месяцев назад
@divineolabode1707 Firstly, to clarify, when I say 7 pages, I mean 7 sides. Secondly, to answer your question, I’m honestly both- I have a lot of ideas and I know a lot of knowledge from revision. I think I’m able to write a lot for a few reasons: - In terms of my paragraphs they tend to be really long- I add 3-5 quotes per paragraph, analysis and context in each paragraph. So each ‘paragraph” is around one to one and a half pages long. + introduction and conclusion. I make a whole plan as soon as I read the question for the text, spending 5-10 minutes planning means I don’t need to spend time thinking about quotes and ideas whilst writing. My plan consists of the main idea I want for each paragraph a few quotes and a link to context. (I tend to write as many quotes as possible on the text page which I may or may not use in my answer) planning really helps as all my ideas are already jotted down and all I have to do is re-write it but with more analysis and depth in my answer. -I’m a pretty fast writer -I enjoy English so I really like analysis and I don’t find it difficult

Blood is the currency that buys or maintains power. Warring is the lifeblood of the state. Killing in service of the state is legitimised and indeed glorified. But the image of rebellion shows the state already turned against itself. In the bloodlust and euphoria post battle, and within the context of a warring society - already at war with itself - it is an easier leap to take throne for yourself (and wife) especially when it has already been supernaturally prophesied.

This changed my perspective of viewing Macbeth. I thought it was his ambition - his hamartia guess I was wrong
@araaav
@araaav 4 месяца назад
Macbeth does eventually overcome his hamartia (somewhat) when he absolutely refuses to kill Duncan - ‘We will proceed no further in this business.’ Until Lady Macbeth changes his mind in 45 lines, and he says ‘I am settled.’ Unless Macbeth needed that extra push (Lady Macbeth’s ambition) and deliberately made it seem as though he wasn’t going to kill Duncan, in order to make her more certain and stirred up about killing the king, and pulling himself further into the deed of regicide. Perhaps he knew from the moment the prophecy was said that he would kill Duncan, and only needed the extra shove from Lady Macbeth in order to do so, so he acts like he won’t kill Duncan. Maybe he understands her and himself so well psychologically that he knows he needs to also stir her up even more. Or not. I hope that made sense.

@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish Thanks for the response. I’ve thought about it and disagree with what I said earlier- there’s not enough evidence to show that Macbeth went out of his way to purposefully evoke a reaction from Lady Macbeth at his change in mind about killing Duncan. On another note, could I argue that the scene with Banquo’s ghost whilst they are eating is symbolic of The Last Supper? The religious imagery in the play is endless already, but even at that time Macbeth asks for wine - and at the Last supper Jesus says his wine is his blood, so drink it and a part of Jesus will be in you. Jesus is betrayed at the last supper like Banquo and Duncan are, by someone they thought they could trust, eventually leading to their deaths (Jesus being killed on the cross as well) . And Jesus, who is said to be God in human form. It solidifies how Macbeth’s betrayal is such an extreme act against God, as well as his bloodlust that is prevalent even during a dinner (him asking for wine, aka blood, perhaps thinking he can still be a part of God because of Jesus’ teachings, but I’m not too sure on that one). Maybe the candle light that you talked about ‘out, out brief candle’ shows how Macbeth has finally accepted he can’t be apart of God and is condemned to hell, especially after worshipping Lady Macbeth like you said, which would be a major sin as Lady Macbeth is obviously not God. Sorry if this didn’t make sense!

@ollietaylor2417 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for this brilliant video, Mr Salles, you're actually making Macbeth interesting to revise for :D Just a question about the river of blood metaphor at point 27:23: Would Macbeth going back, stopping killing, and being left with the memories of all those he has already killed be bad because he would eventually be haunted by guilt from those memories? (Because he would be taking time away from killing and would inevitably have time to reflect on the killing memories, leading to guilt). Earlier on in the scene, the guilt from killing lead to him seeing Banquo's ghost outed himself as the Duncan killer to the nobles, leading to them becoming suspicious and therefore his inability to kill as much and pursue his love for killing without the threat of being found out and overthrown - if that happend he wouldn't be able to fight and kill anymore. By not being consumed by guilt, do you think Macbeth thinks news of his killings is less likely to slip out again, like it did when he was under the influence of guilt - linking again to the psychological understanding of himself. Or do you think it's as simple as Macbeth being hungry for more memories of killing, seeking the thrills and highs he gets off it? Basically would you say it's strategic to move to carry on through the river in order to avoid guilt and in turn being more likely to keep doing what he loves, or rather an instinctual desire to pursue his bloodlust? (Sorry if this is a complete late night revision waffle session 😅)

33:50 As a Christian myself, it genuinely annoys me when every single English teacher somehow gets most religious things wrong. If you do one bad thing, such as killing the King, that doesn't send you to Hell. If you believe in Jesus and place your faith in him then you go to Heaven. We all have sinned except for Jesus and so deserve Hell as Romans 6:23 says the wage of sin is death. Jesus took on our sin on that cross and if we place our faith in him then we go to Heaven. It doesn't matter how much you have messed up, repent and turn to Jesus is what Christians preach. You are correct about Jesus being the light of the world and a candle being used to signify that so i commend you for that. Other than that, this video was exceptionally good and I have so many notes I'm sure will prove very useful in my gcse. Thank you :)

I was wondering if anyone could clarify something for me. I've found this interpretation really interesting, however I don't understand what it means when Macbeth says ‘We will proceed no further in this business.’ If he is psychologically aware of Lady Macbeth's response and hoping that she will take care of the practicalities so that he can commit regicide, why does he almost decide against this? And what would the significance be of Lady Macbeth emasculating and convincing him to continue with their plan? To me that's always come across as her manipulating her husband, so I would be interested on how this fits in with your interpretation. Thank you so much!

GCSE on monday, just wanted to know how you would analyse their structure in speech (e.g. iambic pentameter)
@FatFatty
@FatFatty 4 месяца назад
Use of prose: murderers(lower class) Lady mb because she goes mad and Macbeth when he speaks with the murderers he adopts their way of speaking to gain their trust Also trochaic tetrameter which is only used by the witches coupled with the frequential rhyming couplets creates a mysterious spellbinding effect

hey mr salles what do u think of this interpretation of macbeth reaction the prophecies -> In the quote " why do i yield to the suggestion whose horrid image doth unfix my hair" shakespeare shows the audience that the act of regicide is abnormal to macbeth and macbeth had a chance to do good as he knew that "chance may crown me without my stir" suggest that he would be able to become king through inaction rather than murder. However the reason why macbeth quickly runs to the suggestion of murder is because he became thane of cawdor by "unseaming" macdonwald "from the nave to the chops" .

Hello Mr sallaes , Thank you so much for this briliant video, The part of pyscology into the play is truly critical , ( Tbh I enjoyed it throughout) But THIS IDEA of macbeth 's actions being driven by the blood lust is completely new idea and I in fact mentioned it in my previous essay about Macbeth 's violence . I said that it is not his ambition that drives him to commit violent action but it his obbession to kil which is because of violence being a key trait of masculinity , I connected the idea of blood as a motif to macbeth 's blood lust .But For some reason I had huge question mark from my teacher with "Not sure " , I could understand this is typical opposite of our Teaching on how macbeth is driven by ambition , but would an examiner accept such ideas ? It would be great if you could make a video on how you would apply these analysis into past paper question essay because Essay structure is one of the hardest parts of literature . Thank you so much for your time and effort

You will need to analyse ‘I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent but vaulting ambition…’ to show that ambition is not enough and will lead to a fall, or failure. Otherwise they won’t get what you mean.

thank you for this video! one question i'd like to ask is, im okay at remembering quotes and finding methods, but then i get stuck on what to do there. so for the first quote. unseam'd... id pick out unseamd as a gruesome verb which shows macbeth is a violent character and what not, but then i have no clue what to right about writers intentions, is there any way you could help with this? thanks!

Talk about Macbeths character (isation) and how this links to anything later on and why Shakespeare revealed this + said it like that. E.g use contrasting beliefs like it shows the strong traits that Macbeth has as a warrior e.g fearless but it is the starting point which reveals his blood lust and love for murder / early reveal to his hamartia

Hi Mr Salles, I have found this video really useful but I'm slightly confused on where the witches lie to Macbeth. I thought they equivocated which leads to Macbeth to jump to his own conclusions about the prophecies. Which part are you referring to when you said they lie?
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish 4 месяца назад
Well, when they say none of women born shall harm Macbeth. Macduff’s mother was certainly a woman, and killing her off in childbirth doesn’t really change that fact.

What I don’t understand in this is how the witches prophecies are not true, they hey do all come true but at around 31:12 you say that Macbeth realises they are all fake because he will die even though they never said he was invisible? Sorry if I’m being dumb I just don’t understand it
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish 4 месяца назад
They tell him that no man who is born of a woman can kill him. That is logically impossible, because no man is born of a man. Therefore beth believes he cannot be defeated in battle. This is of course a lie, because it is not what the witches actually mean.

Hello Sir, I see there are different interpretations for Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's relationship as I had previously gathered that his greed for power had made much so that he eventually loses interest in his wife which makes him even more evil. So my question is does the way we see the characters really affect our answers and marks and if it does which interpretation is best to follow?
