I have the same pedal infront of a SansAmp 2112 and it sounds amazing for my ampless rig, as well as my Ampeg SVT. . I play a 1972 Fender Precision. This pedal is a must have.

I bet that 2112 sounds really good. It has some great reviews. What are you using ampless? Just the Pulp N Peel and the 2112? Seems like that would get the job done nicely. We appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!

I got the pedal thanks to this video. It works great between guitar and bass. I did find with the dirt you can turn it down to where it's barely breaking it has a really cool blusy country twangy sound, only issue is that the low notes get fuzzy sounding. I reallt like it though.

It’d be more useful if the Rat circuit had a footswitch. Maybe that would require a larger enclosure, but it’d be worth it to be able to quickly flip it on and off in the middle of a song. Apart from that it looks like a great pedal.

Have utilized a hot tubes for grit. Then tried the Edison Tube preamp for $200. That warms and you can get some light grit from it.
@rockoutvideography91
@rockoutvideography91 6 месяцев назад
There are a lot of ways to approach bass tone. I love the tube sound of my old Ampeg SVT II, but don't miss lugging it around. Although the Hot Tubes and the Edison can be around $200+, I bet they probably sound pretty good. There are both cheaper, and more expensive alternatives out there, but for someone who wants to improve their bass tone with a multi function pedal, and doesn't mind paying for quality from a small company, I think this pedal is a good choice. Another viewer mentioned the Electro Hamrmonics Battalion. For $175 it looks really interesting, but doesn't have tubes.

This shines on certain basses with compressor around 11-noon and blend noonish. It’s an always on kind of setting that can really bring a jazz bass to life. I think just like in guitar….humbuckers compress more so on say a P bass….you will get a different experience than single coils on a jazz…..YMMV ….some active basses and high output. you don’t always want a compressor …so it’s all relative….

@rockoutvideography91

Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, it's greatly appreciated! In your case, since you want to be able to switch back and forth between your "Dirt sound" and whatever you prefer when not using dirt, This is not the only pedal you need. Something like a RAT or other distortion or overdrive pedal would be required. For people that like effects such as phaser, delay, chorus or... An envelope filter, additional pedals will obviously be needed. Although there are some other alternatives that have been mentioned here in the comments, I still think the JHS Pulp N Peel is great pedal for someone who is just looking for a basic Blues, Jazz, Country, Classic Rock type of sound. At the end of the day, it's just great to have so many gear options at so many price points. It wasn't like this when I was growing up.

Can this pedal operate on 48V phantom power from the DI?
@rockoutvideography91
@rockoutvideography91 6 месяцев назад
This pedal is designed to get power from it's 9 Volt Center Negative power input, as delivered by a standard 9 volt pedal power supply. Mine runs fine on both AC powered pedal power supplies, and my Snails rechargable battery power supply. Although some DI boxes can run on 48 volt phantom power, I do not believe this pedal will. If it could, I'm sure it would be in the specs and adds. I'm sure the guys over at JHS would also have mentioned it in one of their videos. My basic electronic knowledge leeds me to suspect adding that feature would involve more cost and possibly switches we don't see on the unit. So, what happens if you turn on phantom power while it's connected? Well, that's your $230.00 science experiment if you want to conduct it, but I would advise against it. The discussion of what is and isn't okay to conect phantom power to could go on for a very long time and there will be some disagreement, but I just don't see it as a necessary risk since I'm convinced phantom power won't run the pedal. If I'm wrong about any of this, hopefully someone will help us out by sharing their knowledge. Thanks for watching and taking the time to post a comment!

I reckon this is quite a useful pedal! 😀👍 Even cooler if it had a basic Octave effect option! 🙂 I'd probably rather spend that kind of money (or even less) on something like a 2nd-hand Boss ME50B, which I'd once owned but then sold during some financially challenging times a few years ago. I just joined a band on bass, for the first time in yonks, and my only 'effect' right now is a Vox AC30 Amplug, mainly to add a bit of grit to my sound but also as a preamp, and I can get a sound like JJ Burnel in early The Stranglers songs that way, which I love 😊 Other than that, thank you for the review, good on ya for featuring YT artists, and of course Happy New Year! 😀🙌💚🌈☀️🎵🍀🥂

@@rockoutvideography91 - You're welcome! 😀👍 My go-to effects with the Boss were Compression/Limiter, various degrees of Distortion, Octaver, and a lot of the time I had a hint of Chorus in the mix. I'd never used the 'bass drum' function connected with the expression pedal, though 😄

There are cheaper alternatives out there that I would love to dive into in future episodes. I have been using a Vox Amplug to practice for about 10 years now and experimented with using the 3.5 mm headphone out to the 1/4" Line in on my interface using a 3.5 mm / 1/4" adapter, just to see what kind of tone it would deliver. How are you getting from the Amplug to your amp? Are you just going DI to a board? Thanks for watching and commenting!

Due to my ignorance in matters of audio production, I couldn't hear the difference when you were playing with the compression. Of all the things you talked about, compression is what I understand the least.
@rockoutvideography91
@rockoutvideography91 6 месяцев назад
Compression is something that mystifies even some of the professional mixers I have seen talk about it. Dave Pensado would be one that comes to mind. I do not claim to understand it fully myself. Technically, it's fairly strait foward. Think of it like an automated volume control that equalizes the volume so that the high peeks are brought down and the low dips are brought up. The controls like attack, release, threshhold, and ratio are setting the rules that this "Automated volume control" will follow. From a "What you hear" point of view, compression can be fairly transparent, especially when it's using small amaounts to "Fix" subtle issues with dynamics. It can also be very aggressive creating very noticable effects like "Pumping sounds". For me, on bass, I see it as evening out the dynamics a little bit and adding what I percieve as a more "Punchy" and percussive sound. I like a ratio of about 4/1 on my Keely Bassist Compressor Pedal. That's obviously a very simple explanation, as I understand compression at this point in my life. Check back with me in a few years and I might have something more or different to say about it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

What a review of the user manual... "It has this knob... check!" Why are you doing a demo review of a bass, within 5 feet of your interface, while using a cheap wireless unit?
@rockoutvideography91
@rockoutvideography91 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching and commenting! Please do not read any sarcasm or defensiveness into my response. I'm honestly attempting to respond to your post and the questions contained within. I enjoy and appreciate criticism, it helps me improve. The purpose of going through the knobs was to show the features of the pedal while comparing these features to the pedals on my pedal board, in an attempt to answer the question “Is this really the only bass pedal you need.” I also wanted to explain what each of these knobs and switches does. When we get to the demo, people already understand what the knobs and switches are supposed to do. In this video, I was not using an audio interface to record. The pedal was plugged into an old Fender Rumble 30 bass amp. This was recorded by a Rode video shotgun mic connected to a Canon G50, shot in 4K, approximately 6 feet away (1.84 meters). Why? Why not? I'm just experimenting with different methods of capturing audio. I have used an interface for these kinds of demonstrations in the past and may do so again. (We could talk more about what happens to audio between when someone records it and when someone else listens to it over the internet, and all of the things that change and influence the sound, but that's for another video.) I use the cheap wireless basically all the time here in the studio because of it's convenience. There's a review on the wireless here on the channel as well. Would I use it for recording bass tracks on an album? Probably not, but for a pedal demo on RU-vid, it's fine. I do not hear any audio quality loss when using this wireless system, but I have tired old ears, so it's possible I'm missing something. When I make a video, including a gear review, I try to make the video I would want to watch if I was interested in the topic or product. I like seeing a run down of all the knobs, switches, and other features. I also like seeing gear demonstrated and enjoy hearing about the experiences of people who have used it. Another thing that interests me in general is the history of gear and the companies that make it. You can't make everyone happy all the time, and I am sorry you didn't enjoy the video, but perhaps in the future we will produce something helpful to you. Until then, we really do appreciate you and others taking the time to interact directly with us in the comments.

Compression can be subtle, and it depends on the system you use to listen to the video as well. I assume you were listening on good speakers or headphones, but I have noted that sometimes people evaluate audio based on what they hear from the speaker on their phone, which in the case of bass is especially problematic. Other viewers have offered some alternatives, some for a lower price. I would really like to get my hands on the Electro Harmonics Battalion, which does more for less money. Fortunately, there are many options available these days in a wide range of prices. Overall, I really enjoy the Pulp N Peel and use it a lot here in the studio. 123denz does make a valid point. For many styles of music, all you "Really need" to do is plug direct into your amp. I only got into pedals a few years ago, so that's how I did it for over 35 years. Having said that, I do appreciate compression and a graphic EQ pedal. I remember as a kid in the 90s hearing the bass sound that some of the older and more experienced players at gigs were getting and wondering why I couldn't get that sound. I now understand it was compression.
