one thing you missed ab the snare section is that you can make the noise LFO have a bit of an attack so that the tonal part of the snare "sidechains" to the noise making it duck out of the way for the tone

I've been experimenting with drum synthesis for about 3 years now and I can safely say this; if you wanna make the best sounding snares, it's best to make it so that the transient and the noise tail have their individual operators. Meaning you can have a very punchy transient (preferably noise looped) and fade the noise tail in, so that the snare can punch through. You can also add some soft clip distortion, a highpass _right_ before the fundamental and you're good to go!

Btw (I came back to this video cause I wanted to try and make some of the sounds you have shown)... Everything you have shown and stated in this video can be 100% applicable to any DAW/Wavetable and I was able to create all of the drum sounds you have shown. Amazing job making this video, you have shown me and everyone else the 'secrets' to making our very own synthesize drums to use in our tracks. P.S. I'm going to overcharge people for the sounds I have created on gumroad now. 🙂🙂💀

Just fyi, the really short reverbs are functionally just a comb filter (it's a stack of allpass fiters with a bunch of feddback) with feedback, so that's another easy way to get that specific metallic sound.

I got 3 comments to make here! 1.- Another way to get this metallic quality to sounds is to use a flanger, set the rate to 0 so it doesn't move around and play with the delay (high feedback will enhance it more so play with that too!) 2.- I think 808 hihats are just white noise with a high-pas and high resonance. I've achieved very similar results by doing that, but I think combining that with the detuned square waves will sound dope af! 3.- Since you brought up multiband delay, a cool trick I like to do with it is go to the presets tab, go all the way down and click "randomize" and just use the morph knob to go between the 8 banks! You can get some pretty gnarly textures with that! Anyways great video! I've always struggled a bit with drum synthesis (particularly with snares) and seeing tips from someone is really helpful, so thanks! :D

So you mentioned detuning and high passing a square wave to get metallic sounds. This is an adaptation of methods used in older analog drum machines (Roland's CR-78, TR-606, and TR-808 are popular examples) wherein 6 square waves would be detuned and ring modulated against each other, producing a bright metallic sound with no additional processing needed. An alternative that I recommend is using Serum's chaos oscillator (found in the global page), cranking it all the way up to audio rate, and setting it to modulate the coarse pitch of a square wave. This will potentially save you a filter slot, allows you to keep the metallic sound in mono, and gives (IMO) better results straight off the bat. 🐱

The pitch envelope of the kick drum synth section can be solved by adding two envelopes. One for the main pitch and the other shorter one for creating transients. Modulating the same parameter with multiple envelopes is one of the techniques for creating sound effects

Great video! There aren't a lot of well edited, high quality videos like this on RU-vid that cover production fundamentals. However, I would have appreciated a focus on drum transients, especially in snare drums. Snares are mostly body and tail, but (as you probably know) the reason your initial snare has no impact is largely because of the lack of a "click" at the start. That's the transient, the high energy waveform that comes from the initial impact of the drumstick on the snare drum. As you refined your drums, I could hear that transient being created indirectly through effects and envelopes. Your method still resulted in a good snare, but I think the process could be less mystic if the transient was mentioned.

Another thing you can try is is convolving your drums with other samples, using an IR reverb plugin. Think of it as an extremely complex EQ with insane Q settings. Try convolving a snare or topper with a different high-hat sample for instance, or really anything that has the material quality you're looking for, and the drums will inherit the quality of the IR sample. I've even gone as far as to create my own IR sample pack for this purpose.
