I have a jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 350,000 miles on it. Day driver about 70 a day a few sensors has been the biggest problems other than basic maintenance. Also it gets 18 to 24 mpg with auto 4x4. But I would not buy a Grand Cherokee
That's amazing! Way to go!! I had an '01 with 337k miles, but you are the highest mileage 4.7 I've ever heard of now in every forum and video comments I've read. Is that the original engine and transmission?
@@CovidVirgin no I changed the oil every 6000 miles put gas in it and that's it. I only changed the breaks on the Jeep two times. Lol. That think was the best vehicle I ever had.
My 99 is at 260k still running silky smooth, and my dads 98 is at 317k and also still running great. These motors are amazing, and gotta love that nice low end torque.
i belibe that my grand cherokee has 2nd transmission, and engine still running strong , don't forget replace water hoses, fuel pump, and filters for better performance.
I've had my 04 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0L for just over 10 years. 204,000 miles right now and still runs like the day I bought it (used and garage kept at 52k). Aside from routine maintenance, I've had the starter replaced, TP sensor replaced, and a new front drive shaft put on. I drive it every day and will continue to until she finally gives in. I remember my first week owning it I was pumping gas and a complete stranger walks up to me, he must have been in his 70s. Asked me "Is that one of those jeeps with that 4.0?" I was like yes sir I just bought it. He said hold on to it, they don't make em like that anymore lol
My family has a 05 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 305k miles with the original engine and trans. We've hit 3 deer in it and it keeps going. Most realiable vehicle we've ever had.
3 reasons I watch Scotty's videos: No. 3 Mechanic lore No. 2 His honesty No. 1 (and most important) The selection of random animal pictures illustrating his laughs! Hah
My '98 Jeep GC with the 4.0L engine and old-style NP242 transfer case has 208,000 miles on both the engine and transmission. I am the original owner. It continues to be the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. And it's very capable off-road. I'm glad that Scotty finally admitted how good they are. Great MPG? No, but I get 18-19 mpg on the highway. A bit less than it did when new, but still not god-awful.
I daily drive a 2002 GC with the 4.0L and 207,000 miles. Bought it a from the original owner in 2014. It’s a 100% Florida car that was garage kept until I bought it and has never seen snow or ice. Have I had problems? Yes. Just minor issues like a water pump, idler pulley, and starter. All these problems gave me a warning and I was able to repair them without breaking down. The Jeep has only left Florida once in its life, last year to Savannah, GA. I’m planning to drive it to Abilene, TX in March.
My dad used to have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 when I was 10 years old, and it was a brilliant car. Yes, the V8 meant it was a TREMENDOUS gas hog, but it had some of the most comfortable seats of ANY car I had ever sat in. I remember when we went to pick it up back in July 2010, and from the moment I sat down on the seats for the first time, I was in heaven as they were just oh so comfy... The Americans really know how to make proper car seats! We even went on a caravan holiday in it to Great Yarmouth in August 2010, and I remember watching one of my Top Gear DVDs on the way there on the aftermarket DVD headrests we had installed in it. The V8 also had plenty of power for towing our caravan on the 127-mile journey to the campsite.
You're absolutely wrong the end of the motor because just like the Ford 460 Big Bore Short Stroke big valves big boom dirty motor. Why they do make excellent torque. EPA in government killed them. On the plus side we now have the 3.6 a lot more torque.
I owned a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited trim with the 6 cylinder engine. I only had two mechanical problems but both were pretty simple to replace. After 4 sets of tires, 2 sets of brakes and one set of shocks from normal wear and tear and 210,000 miles I felt I wanted something newer. I honestly felt bad trading it in. I hope the new owner got as much pleasure and reliability from it as I did.
I have a 2005 GC, 3.7L V-6. Bought it in 2006. Has 130,000 miles on it - it's a daily driver. Oil is changed every 3000 miles; runs like new and is very dependable. I've never bought any of my vehicles based on fuel mileage.
i KEEP READING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WITH 2014-15-16-17 ......MINE IS 1995...... No transmission problems at all until after 15+ years and then nothing major. Most all problems have been simple to fix. I still love it :-)
I have a late 80's Cherokee XJ with the 4.0L High Output, sitting at 253100 miles and it runs like a top! Starts every time I ask it to. This has been second only to my 92 Previa that lasted just about 300K
Got a 1996 Grand Cherokee 4.0 closing in on 300k miles. A little valve ticking and a few pesky aging suspension issues here and there but still going strong.
My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0L 6-cyl has 280k miles on it and counting, and is still my daily driver in 2019... yeah the mileage does suck and it has a few other issues for sure, but hey, it gets me where I need to go, and in relative comfort too
@@SnarlyCharlyDamn, rest in peace. I’m still driving my 04 WJ with 136k miles on it. My biggest concern is the transmission, do you think I’m good for a couple more years?
@@JackHagar Mine definitely gave warning signals before it went, it started to slip often when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Mine lasted for 280k though, you're nowhere near that yet. So, hopefully so
I’ve had 2 Cherokees with 4.0. One was totaled and I bought another. Both had just under 100k when I bought them, the wrecked one had 178k when it was totaled, and I put 215k total miles on the next one and sold it to someone else and it was running fine. You absolutely could expect to buy one, daily drive it, and put 20k on it...I would say WAY more than that is possible. Easy to work on too. Great vehicles IMO.
Actually Scotty, I bought a 1988 Honda CRX that I daily drove for 5 years and I never had to replace a single part! Very reliable car and I would recommend
I bought a 97 Grand cherokee back in 2015 for $900 with 225k on the I6 and original transmission. I drove that car all over as my daily driver until this past spring when I sold it still in great mechanical and cosmetic shape for a newer Pontiac Vibe (better mileage, more likely to be reliable in a new city). I really miss my Jeep.
My 04 Jeep wJ v8 variant just hit 170,000 and sadly it is going to see it’s day soon. Burning oils and has a transmission code popping up requiring a full rebuild. The Jeep was solid till this point. Will drive it to the ground like it deserves 🙏🏻
Sucks for you. I have 3 Jeeps. Two 98 Grand Cherokees. One with the 4.0 inline 6 and 42re supposedly bad transmission yet it has 310k miles now. Original engine and tranny. The other a 5.9 limited with 200k miles. The 3rd Jeep is a 89 Grand Wagoneer. With 140k miles. If you maintain them properly they last forever
Jacon Johnsonter your talking about Jeeps made in 1998 when Chrysler first bought them and didn’t change or alter them to a 2004 which was 6 years into their take over. Your basically comparing apples and oranges.
@@OcAirsoft chrysler bought Jeep in 84 not 98. Lay off the pipe buddy. The trans and v8s on the ZJs are chrysler products. The only thing they kept on the ZJ AND WJ were the inline 6 engines and the body was designed by amc for the ZJ.. but the driveline is all dana new process and new venture and chrysler..
Scotty I'm a seasoned mechanic and you saved me a lot of time with the A/C blower motor trick on my mom's Versa. I Fonzied the dash and it started working. I really can't spare the time to deal with that sad little car so that was a life saver.
Thugz bunny wife’s a mail carrier. I own an 05 tj w/135k and 10 jk w/182k right hand drives. They are the bane of my existence. I loathe them with all of my soul. I’m 20k into the jeeps and 7.5k into repairs over last two years. We break even on her MTC allowance but the gas is on us. Torque converter just stopped locking in on the jk and Im about to put a tyranny in it soon. I just replaced the pcm on the tj and Heater core on the went south over the summer. those go for 3-400$ IF you can find one. The 4.0 is the better mother by far tho. I’m gonna cry myself to sleep now.
If it's the front main seal on the transmission then yes the engine or transmission has to come out to fix it. Often it's easier to just top the fluid off and check it every time you drive it.
2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the one of a kind Selec-Trac transfer case that will do AWD, 4WD and regular rear 2WD. Plus the bullet proof inline six 4.0 engine. 307,620 miles and it only getting close to middle age. Best vehicle I have ever owned. Plan to drive it the rest of my life.
I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ and love it. I have the Overland Edition. Full time 4x4. Great vehicle. I have a 4" lift and bigger tires on it amd love it. I got it from an estate auction with only 96k miles on it and turned it into a great weekend vehicle for me and my son for camping & fishing etc.
The 99-04 wj is daily worthy just take basic care of them youll get over 300k on either engine choice. The weak link is the trans. Great 4x4 capability and solid axles front and rear. Im sitting at 214k in my 96 grand cherokee with the 4.0 I6 and 225k on my 5.2L v8
My 99 grand cherokee 4.7 v8 ran till it hit 200k miles, I'm amazed at how long it lasted with little maintenance and with everything leaking, it's not the greatest built car but it's definitely resilient.
Joel Spivak thanks for the info, I was thinking of selling it but just didn’t know what I could get for it. I bought it for 2grand form an elderly lady she was the original owner and was garage kept but yeah 5grand sounds like a decent deal
Thank you Scotty! I bought a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee known as the WJ series! It has that. bulletproof 4.0 engine! Right now it has 170,000 miles! Runs like new! It's not my daily driver! Bought it for its 4 Wheel Drive capability in snow! I paid $1,500 for it!
I've got the 2000 wj with the legendary 4.0l. 286000, aside from the paint fading it runs like the day it came out of the factory. Hands down the Jeep WJ is s TANK👍💯
04 Grand Cherokee. Motor still strong at 260k miles. A lot of front end suspension has been replaced. Entire cooling system also. Great vehicles overall.
@@susu-mi7kx lol yours is still young. In my 02 I changed the transmission fluid at 250k. Idk of the previous owner before 250k ever changed it tho but the transmission is running fine still
My 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 4.7L has 549K miles on it, still running. Im a practicing mechanic. Original Engine and Trans and Transfer Case but the TC's are known to go out and cause 4WD to stick if the Transfer Case fluid isnt changed every 30K miles... Only changed suspension and steering components with Alternator and a Water Pump. We are talking 20+ year old vehicles that survive theough a lot of punishment. Of course you have to maintain them.
Same man. Bought it at 250k miles and I have put 10k relatively trouble free miles. I only had a few issues which were normal things like old hoses and stuff.
I love how Grand Cherokees have *almost* always had RWD/4WD layouts with truck engines. It keeps it unique and not feeling like a typical FWD crossover. If the next generation Grand Cherokee ends up with a FWD layout you might as well remove the word "Grand."
Isaac Woolley It had a big 360 in it with full time 4 wheel drive. It was big & heavy (4,500 lbs). That’s about what it got. Ok, maybe 12 on the highway & 9 in the city. When I came home from the army, my wife & I both drove our cars home. She had a little 86 Chevy citation, or something like that, took around 11 gallons to fill up & the Jeep took 20.4 gallons & I had to stop twice as much as she did. (Edit) I just looked up the mileage on a ‘80 Cherokee & they get 11 city & 15 highway & average 12 mpg. That was new, not when it was 10 years old.
@Isaac Woolley you clearly dont know those old FSJs. For one they had a mechanical fuel pump not electric. Two the gas needle on them werent that accurate. If you stop the gas sloshes foward and the needle goes down until it settles. If you step on the gas the needle goes up.. But yes they did get 10mpg or so. I have a 89 Grand Wagoneer same 360 his cherokee fsj had. And i have to refill every 3 days. I get 11mpg in mine actually by measuring the miles driven and fill up. But 9-12 mpg is about normal for them. They also only have 3 speed automatics. So imagine going 65mph at 3000 rpm ?
I have a 2004 jeep wj overland with a 4.7 H.o. that Ive owned since 2005 daily driven in nepa. It's been very realible never not started. Never stranded me. Taken it on long trips. Runs great now at 131,355 just replaced a bad oil pressure sender. Fixed the problem. But I really hate to get rid of it. Shifts perfect and the qudradrive is amazing.
Amazing. I was planning to buy a Grand Cherokee 2000-2004 seeing it on the thumbnail made me super happy! The ones with the old Mercedes engines and the 4.0L last a really long time. The body looks fantastic as well, if they offered me a 2019 or 2004 Grand Cherokee I'd get the 2019 one just to sell it and get 3 2004s.
I have a 1992 Jeep Comanche. I bought her brand new in 1992 with 12 miles on her. She runs wonderful to this day. I had the transmission replaced because I trusted the mechanics call to replace it. She is going on 233,000 miles. Best decision I made was to buy my Jeep in 1992.
The 4.0L I6 TJ is the best and it can be a very good daily if you don't go over 32 x 11.5 x 15 BFG KO2. But the fun doesn't start until the weekend as we all know!
Back in the '80s I used to be able to buy late'60s chargers for $50 that were beat pretty bad and I drive them for a while pull the starters alternators and crap off of them and scrap them one of them when the forklift came in to pick it up at the junkyard one of the wheels actually fell off two story.
Had a 96 with the 5.2 and a 99 with the 4.0. Loved them both! Zero issues with either and I didn’t treat them that well. I also averaged 25mph with both driving 40 miles a day for work.
You averaged 25 mpg in the same boat I got? I’m lucky if I get 13! Idk if you done anything to yours or not but mines got a 3” lift 31x10 tires and 1 1/2” wheel spacers.
I would have to agree. I have had quite a few Jeeps however my 04 WJ is my favorite. I did have to do the heads on the 4.7HO, the previous owner overheated it one too many times. It does eat the gas but in context compared to my old K5 Blazer it gets great mileage and has MUCH more power. JUst clicked over 150,000 and it still rolls down the highway at 75 with ease and with a few judicious mods is a star off road.
My aunt had this aforementioned Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2002. He is very reliable, never malfunctioned, regularly maintained. We even drove with my aunt in the trunk for one ride. We don't have him anymore but I miss him, he was fun to drive.
I’ve got an 04 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0. Great daily driver, very comfortable around town, and fantastic performance on the trails with the locking diffs. I also think the most traded it vehicle for cash for clunkers was the 2002 Ford Explorer :D
I've owned an 84' Cherokee 4x4, 86' Cherokee 2 wheel, 97, grand Cherokee 2 wheel. All with the 4.0. All ran superb. Am currently driving a 99' grand Cherokee AWD with the 4.7 have done very little work to it outside routine maintenance. 278,000 miles, and I would not hesitate to get in it and drive California. I live in East Texas.
Unibody cherokee's (1992) weigh 3028 lbs with 5spd manual you get about 20mpg in 25-30 yr old vehicle. Not bad, with the miles I put on mine working close to where I lived, I figured out it was greener than a prius driving regular 15k a yr, and with plenty of parts in the junk yard, easy to fix and work on.
I also thought it was the Explorer. Whoever the wackos were who devised the "Cash for Clunkers" program should be put away. $3 billion of tax dollars wasted and good vehicles were senselessly destroyed. That reduced the inventory of used vehicles, driving up prices. Thanks, Obama!
@@GentlemanAmerican exactly right. Cost more money for lower income earners who needed an inexpensive vehicle and couldnt afford to buy new. Another very poorly thought out program by the federal government.
Had a Cherokee classic that I bought new and it went 396,000 before the #1 cylinder wore out, then bought a used Jeep Grand Cherokee 2004, 4 years ago with 130k on it-now at 190 and purring like a kitten. BTW, cost 4,600 4 years ago-4WD! Love those older Jeeps!1999
I can attest to this lol. I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 260,000 miles. I barely have to do maintenance except oil changes. Its had its issues but it's just wear components like dry rotted radiator hoses and some broken sensors. Easy fixes. You're damn right about it being a gas hog lol. 12.1mpg city but I love the vehicle.
As the original owner of my 2004 Grand Cherokee V-8 it currently has 187,000 miles on the original drivetrain. Gas mileage remains in the 18-20 mpg range both in city and highway driving. Mine does need a replacement battery about every 2- 2 1/2 years tho. No oil leaks or burning as I make needed repairs as they show up. Her 2004 Accord is at 392,000 on the original drivetrain., No leaks or smoking on hers.
I have a 2000 WJ from new, now has 620,000 miles on it and I'm looking to buy another one. Other than dropped valve seats, no mechanical problems, the trans has never given a problem.
I landed a 95 jeep grand cherokee Laredo 5.2L quadratrac. For $650 Needs a front cv shaft and hub. Old lady had it and took a parking lot ding in 2013. Been sitting until 2 weeks ago. Runs great! 123k miles
My wife Drives a 1999 Jeep Wrangler got just over a 100 ,000 on it . Finally had a brake line rust out , so replace them all . 20 yrs old , still runs good . Earlier this yr replace the whole top / windows kit . About the only money investigated in last 5 yrs besides routine Maintenance
I've had my 2001 Grand Cherokee for 13 years. 4.7 L V8 2nd owner bought it dirt cheap from an old fella who hardly drove it. Never had any major issues aside from the plastic radiator cracked and had to replace. Regular change of oil and It just keeps running. Lots of power and not bad for towing. Horrible fuel economy but my wife loves it and wouldn't drive anything else. So nah! I'll be keeping it until it doesn't run anymore.
88-91 Honda r still good daily drivers with great gas mileage since they were solid built. I never had any rubber hose issues with my 91 civic. Too bad I had to get rid of it since the cam shaft was bent since the previous owner drove it without oil 🤦🏻♂️
The 300 cubic inch Ford straight six was a far better motor than the Jeep inline six. I've owned both, how about you - or did you just feel the need to use the cliche "hold my beer" line?
@@buckhorncortez I've had family members with both, of which I used. The Ford was in a work van and a bulletproof, indestructible workhorse that went to over 320K before it was sold with nothing wrong. The Jeep was in a Cherokee that I can't remember how long it went but it was comparable, and it had much more power which I appreciated a great deal. The Ford was economical but lacked power, the Jeep had amazing power but not as economical. It's a toss up really, and the reason I made the joke.
@@buckhorncortez Yes, 7-bolt mains in the Ford 300/4.9L - The only way to destroy those engines is to leave the oil too low or way too dirty for too long. The 4.0 Jeep engines are excellent, as well. If I were going to buy a Jeep, it would be an old one with the 4.0 6-cyl or the old 4-cyl from the CJ period.
He added 10 years to that one by mistake. Had an 02 Taurus, it was a good car if you could keep the mice out of it. Never did find out where they were getting into the interior.
I got a steal for a 2003 4.7L V8 Jeep Cherokee in March with 136,000 and its now nearly November and it currently has 149,000 and I’ve had zero problems with it. I paid $705! It had a terrible knocking noise when I got it and so I got it taking a gamble. The problem? Turned out it just needed oil!! Runs like a charm!
