Spartacus is a man who lost everything. His freedom, his family, hell to this day we’re not 100% sure where he came from because the Romans took his past from him too, no one bothers to record the history and lineage of a slave after all. Our best reconstruction of his early life goes something like this: He’s a mercenary in Thrace turned Roman soldier turned deserter turned slave turned gladiator.
Now contrary to popular belief, gladiators were seldom killed, but it’s a hell of a life being kidnapped, shipped across a continent and physically assaulted for shits and giggles. Even in training, Spartacus ends every day beaten, bloody, and bruised from fighting at his limits. But Rome had caught the tiger by its tail. Here was a man and thousands like him across the empire who spent every day training to become the perfect killing machine and every night dreaming of freedom but don’t worry about it, him? What’s he gonna do? There’s no way he could ever stand up to his masters, not unless, I don’t know, he happened to grab hold of a kitchen knife
Music (in order of appearance):
Brandon & Derek Fiechter - Spartacus the Gladiator
Kevin Macleod - Hidden Past
Brandon & Derek Fiechter - Battle March
Brandon & Derek Fiechter - The Colosseum
John Williams - Duel of the Fates
Kevin Macleod - Evening of Chaos
Kevin Macleod - Monkeys Spinning Monkeys
Penderecki - Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima
Brandon & Derek Fiechter - Battle March
Kevin Macleod - Neon Laser Horizon

Hey love your video's Jack Rackam. I've got a guy in mind that you should consider making a video on. His last name is "Spicer-Jackson" and he was the biggest nutcase the British military ever produced. His antics are so outrageous that you could easily make everyone laugh on your channel. This guy's worth a video. May this pique your interest. Byeeeeee.

There was one silver lining from the Third Servile War: a reduction in slavery inside the Roman Empire. The large landholders were so shaken by the revolt that they significantly reduced the number of agricultural slaves under their employ, and relied more on freeman laborers. This coincided with the end of large scale Roman conquests after the Principiate War, which cut off sources of cheap slaves.

Crassus was the richest man in the world and remains one of the wealthiest persons in human history. Their use to be a saying, "call no man rich until he can assemble and arm a legion" Crassus had a private army of seven fully equipped legions. "Driven from cisalpine gual to Sicily" is a funny way of saying: "the rebels gave up on the chance to leave Italy and instead turned back to continue looting the country side." Spartacus was a total Chad, the epitome of dying on your feet rather than living on your knees, but let's not pretend the man was a Saint either. He was a threat to Rome, and a danger to the countryside. Crassus was the only politician willing to get off his ass and do something to deal with a crisis and he spent his own money to get it all done.

This is terribly misleading, likely due to the documentary. Spartacus and his band of slaves actually reached the Alps and could've escaped into Gaul, but his men decided they wanted to go south again and keep pillaging Italy. They did slaughter a lot of people, it wasn't really a peaceful march only taking what they needed. That's why they had so much gold to pay the pirates. So, it wasn't exactly a just war. I'm not actually sure they were any better than the Second Servile War, where Eunus declared himself king and kept his own slaves. Though to be fair to Spartacus, he apparently did try to prevent the slaughtering of Civilians, and probably would've liked to escape to Thrace and help with the war there against the Romans, but his men outvoted him.

It's kind of fitting that Crassus was the first of the Triumvirate to die. Like Caesar and Pompey weren't saints, but most of what they achieved was through sheer charisma or military might, and they lasted as long as they did because they were able to get powerful people or the public to like them. Crassus achieved what he did by being a straight-up bully and scoundrel with tactics that about make Vlad "The Impaler" III's true and alleged war crimes tame by comparison. Like, you know there's a reason Crassus isn't remembered as prominently as Pompey or Caesar, and it isn't just because he died in the most moronic way or because his last campaign was a brutal flop. Recalling what I can, I feel like almost everyone who knew him didn't like him. Even he and Pompey got into it when they were ostensibly allies, and open conflict was probably inevitable later down the line had Crassus not croaked first.

The normal Romans weren't that bad. After Caesar won the game of thrones, he held 4 Triumphs in a row. This channel is criminally undersubscribed! I mean, almost 200k is certainly no small feat, but based on the quality and humour of the presentation, my first guess would have been way higher

Your presentation is great and hysterically funny. Even Crassus and Spartacus could laugh together to seeing it.

That is not a praetorian, that is Commodus who was kinda of an easy boss in the game

@@johng7003 Oh yeah, you're right! On legendary (or whatever the extreme difficulty was), he was not an easy boss.

From what I could understand Sertorius from Spain tried to get into contact with Spartacus, makes you wonder how history would have turned out if Sertorius did manage to get into contact with Spartacus.

Here in brazil we have a saying when someone fucks up, we call it "Erro Crasso" which in english basically means "Crassus Mistake".

Worst part about being a Gladiator was the training. You were far more likely to die of exhaustion from the Gladiator training than the actual fights.

That Roman commander was a silver tongued devil, with all that money, power, and charm he's sure to go far. He really built a lot of karmic energy to this point in his life.

Should've kinda included that line from the show Spartacus said at the start of the last battle. ''We shall teach them all who draw breath are of equal worth! And those who seek to place heel upon the throat of liberty, will fall, TO THE CRY OF FREEDOM!''

The decimation didn’t happen until after Crassus faced Spartacus, and a portion of his troops fled. He decimated that portion only; though he was horrible to his troops in general, he didn’t decimate his entire army right out of the gates.

They should make a movie called Fire Brigade and it would be like a Gangs of New York in ancient Rome.

When the antagonist spontaneously dying from dysentery is a nice and good story ending because a bad one is when corpses get thrown over 100´s of Kilometre. History is just nice, get´s a causal side note when 1000´s die, like "and then we brutally murdered everybody even the donkey´s for some reason." A story in the bible but plot twist they are the good guy´s in this story.
