I saw the Super Mario Bros Movie. I'm not much of a movie guy, but it's hard to not talk about a video game movie when I can. Especially one as important as Mario!

By all means share more stuff based on your interests... talk about the D&D movie if you like, it's on brand! Weirdly, I think the finale was my favorite, but I think I would go so far as to say that I actually found the action scenes to be a lot of fun... I'm already going back to see it again this weekend and I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing if they hit me as well next time as this time.

I loved every minute of it. They did a really good job at making The Mushroom Kingdom feel like a lived in world, instead of just some area that the Mario bros go to.

This film have all that a Mario film need to have. Simple plot, and a bunch of beloved characters in a lot of funny absurd situations with the trademark sense of humor the franchise have. Cool thing

For me with the modern/80s pop music made sense when Mario was in Brooklyn / the “real” world, when the songs crossed into the mushroom kingdom it was super confusing to me too

The pop music actually REPLACED songs composed for the film, and it's a CRIME. There's one that plays during the scene Jared mentioned in the video, where Mario is going to meet DK, and there was an amazingly orchestrated DK medley for that scene that was just cut. It's in the soundtrack but it's not in the film. Really hoping the DVD release has an option to play the film with the licensed songs cut, so you can experience it how it was meant to be, with the original score.

Which makes one wonder why they cut the better option. Especially when the medleys would've been more pandering to the movie's target audience, and cheaper because they wouldn't have had to pay licensing fees.

My personal issue with the movie was the pacing It feels like a 2 hour movie condensed to 90 minutes, would explain why some things move so quickly or aren't given room to breathe

I agree but I think that's the nature of children's films. That said, I was afraid to use the bathroom because I knew I'd miss a whole lot based on just hoe fast the plot was moving.

@@machbass The thing is, Puss in Boots 2 runs 10 minutes longer. That little extra time for the characters would have made the Mario movie story and pacing so much better. It only needed 10 minutes more in total, sometimes only a few seconds more per scene / set piece and a slower camera would have worked wonders.

Movie execs absolutely mandate a 90 minute run time for family movies. No idea why. I never had a problem with long movies as a kid. Maybe quickly filling bladders?

@@sor3999 Well, Puss in Boots 2 ran 10 minutes longer, Spiderverse 20 minutes, HTTYD films 5-10 minutes longer, even The Croods had 5 more minutes, most Pixar films these days clock in at 100 minutes. It's mainly Illumination being so short at this point.

You probably already know , but they actually removed a score on the scene they are heading to meet Kranky Kong. The original score is so good and you can see the hints of DK music. Probably execs just thinking it will work. I hope they remove them in the BluRay release.

I see this as more of Nintendo testing the waters of if there is a real interest from movie goers to their kind of fun. Mario is certainly an icon and typically doesn't need too much plot as with most of his platformer games. I'm sure that when, not if at this point, they do a sequel, there will be more plot points as this movie acts as a solid base to jump off into whatever story they want to pursue as Mario and Luigi find their place in the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond that. Loved the movie as a Nintendo fan and can't wait to see where they go from there.

My main issue is that its called the "Super Mario BROTHERS" movie yet Luigi is present for like 10% of it. I get they didn't want to have Preach be useless but the whole theme of the movie is that the brothers can do anything as long as they're together but they're separated majority of the movie That and the pacing is way to fast for how short of a movie this is. Feels like there were multiple deleted scenes because they just jump forward without any hesitation.

@@trident042 And they definitely took the safest route. Granted Mario fans wouldn't bat an eye, I imagine there are viewers who don't understand the Mario formula that would've complained if Peach were used as a damsel in distress.

That Arwing model on top of Mario’s TV is fucking awesome! Star Fox turned 30 back on February 21st so this is a nice nod to it. Also, it appears to be a mix of the SNES and Assault designs.

5:59 I'm pretty sure the only reason there were no fart or butt jokes was because Nintendo was breathing on their necks and said "you're not gonna pull that shit on my property on my watch"(they probably saw what they do when they have "creative freedom" on their Dr. Seuss' adaptations...) . The annoying pop song placement(they even removed some Donkey Kong themes from the final movie in favor of them...)was probably a compromise to remind us this is still Illumination...

Mario's dad was played by the Mario game voice actor and one of the characters was modeled after the original Mario from way before SMB.

I really loved the movie, from how much it made Bowser appear to be a badass in the opening scene (some of you may have seen in the original trailer at this point), all of the hints and nods to pretty much everything that had to do with the Mario series, the 80s music that they picked (it's cool that not everyone enjoys that stuff), to how the movie protrays the personality of some of the characters so well. And the best part about it is that it doesn't try to push a message like so many Disney movies have been doing these days. It's just pure entertainment.

Illumination is good at doing that, basically all of their movies are about the fun and not about some message, although it does represent part of growing up and trying to do your family proud, but that's a good thing.

I agree on virtually all points. My only gripe is that the movie could’ve benefited from being 10-15 minutes longer, in order to flesh out some scenes, for more character interaction, etc… but aside from that, enjoyed the movie a lot.

The 80's music made sense in the context of the Brooklyn setting they chose with Arcade cabinets all over the place, the problem I had was that the last song was distinctively not 80's so they didn't even stick to their own trope all the way through.

Just came back from watching it, I loved it but I now completely understand why critics hated it If you don't have a knowledge of the game you're going to get lost within minutes since it relies on an understanding of the mechanics of the game to understand how the world even works and to people not familiar with it I'm sure it gets overwhelming really fast

I think the gags about the multiple "painful montage" meant to represent the course progression of a player, always getting beaten up at every obstacles before getting better. They refrencing the games, maybe. Same for the music. SMBs came out in the 80s, with all the vibe that came to it. Since the movie is heavy on nostalgia, that didn't bother me.

I don’t think Key’s performance was modulated. He’s talked in several interviews about how the producers in the studio told him to make his voice extremely high-pitched and demonstrated the voice. I think that’s entirely him. Rather than be comedic for comedy’s sake, he seemed very intent on embodying the CHARACTER of Toad. You can tell he really enjoyed doing the performance in interviews.

Everyone says exactly the same thing and I agree! It's not the best made movie as a whole. But it is AMAZING for Mario fans. It's extremely fun, and full of references. The music is amazing, and the world looks beautiful. The pacing is too fast at times, and there's some odd choices, but if you're a fan of the Mario franchise as a whole, you'll be smiling the whole way through. I was even crying, in a happy way, like "Oh my god, it's the thing! I can't believe I'm seeing/hearing this!". There's no way a serious film critics will find it "great", but there's also no way a true Mario fan won't have a wonderful time watching it!

I will say I'll disagree about disliking Mario getting walloped too much, because I think, short of them explaining away 1-Ups and showing Mario actually *die*, they wanted to get across his tenacity, and I think it worked well for that.

Agreed. Much of the film was about Mario's struggle to become the hero he needed to become, and seeing him get frequently beat up helped build him into that hero by overcoming his failures for his brother. If he hadn't needed to overcome so many failures throughout the film, his victory at the end would've been less impactful because it would've just been another victory on top of his previous ones. Although I do also get Jared's point-of-view, that a lot of it felt like it was done more for the sake of physical comedy, than just storytelling.

I am disappointed, the film never explained the role mushroochlorians play with the flowers and stuff. Having Mario and Luigi die, and subsequently revived with the green mushrooms‘ mushroochlorians wolda helped big time.

Maybe the 80s music was meant to be kind of a nod to how Mario as a series got its start in the 80s with Donkey Kong, Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. all releasing during the decade, and the movie itself kind of being the start of Mario's journey. Just a guess from someone who hasn't seen the movie.

Just about everything that you've said for the review, I do agree with you with, except for one thing, being the music choices. While it might not seem like it makes the most sense to have all of the 80s music, to me, it kinda felt like they were paying sorta an homage to when a lot of the Nintendo IPs started, in the 80s, and kinda picking music that was from the time that might fit.

There's literally a scene that takes place in a bathroom, and they still managed to avoid toilet humor, so that's refreshing. As for the '80s music, I assume that's just because Mario was made in the '80s. Having said that, I feel it was inappropriate for most scenes, and could have just been more Mario music.

My thoughts leaving the theatre, as a movie, 6/10, decent family movie, not deep at all but very enjoyable. As a Mario movie, it’s about as good as I could expect a Mario movie to be. I also liked this more than Sonic and less than D&D, though I have almost no relationship with Sonic, so those movies were never really gonna be for me. I’ve also never played D&D. I’ve listened to a couple of podcasted campaigns, so I’m not totally in the dark, but mostly I watched that movie as a silly fun fantasy adventure, which it mostly was and it too was enjoyable for 2 hrs, and a movie I could watch again when it becomes available for home viewing, but ultimately not a movie that stays too long in my memory.

My issue with the film is that it was sort of a climax from start to finish. There was no real breathing room. And it's understandable since Luigi and Mario get separated and Mario has to save him. Glad they didn't get distracted from that point, but I think it would've been better if Luigi was captured a little later in the film instead of right at the start. Give them time to explore the kingdom.
