Video got recommended by YT, and Wow, first time viewer and to be honest I really wasn't expecting this, keep it up this is top-notch quality, made me want to try out zigbee again! Good rhythm, very detailed and USEFUL information provided, just perfect.
great work ! and big thanks and I hope you show us a separate video for more details regarding installing and setting up the raspberry PI since some steps has been moved fast
Sure thing! I try to not go too slow on some steps, as I try to find a balance between the videos being "watchable" and "followable". But I will definitely tackle more of setting up and configuring a Raspberry Pi in the future. What wasn't clear, in particular?
Actually, that's could be a great idea for a future video, to make random lights in the house/office, TVs, and music go "on"/"off" when the house is in "vacation" mode.
The important question to ask before implementing any home automation or smart product is "How does all of this work if the Internet goes down, or my router is broken, or my hub stops working, or if someone who doesn't have any tech wants to use it?" All HA kit has to have a manual override and be useable without the tech. No one wants to be diagnosing TCPIP issues or reinstalling servers just to turn the lights on.
Without internet it works perfectly well. The ZigBee parts work perfectly fine if your router is down as well. My smart sockets (Tuya) and relays (Shellys) work without internet as well (unlike how it works without HA), so in that sense this setup is a lot more stable and reliable than most home automation setups. They do require a working router, since they use local HTTP. And my setup at home is used by non technical people... And you use 1 simple dashboard or Google Home commands instead of 10 different apps, so that's also "check". Setup is more complicated - true, but so is any advanced home automation setup.
That's definitely a good tip. I'll mention it in a follow up video. I actually had no issues running it from the USB3 in the office, but at home after about 8 devices it stopped recognizing one of the lights. An extender helped.
PS,, the green tabletop at the beginning you say all we need is,,, , pi, zigbee, box, PSU, SD card, ZIGBEE stuff You forgot to mention a PC, monitor, keyboard, Mouse, windows / linux operating system, SD card writer,, PHILIPS HUE & ALEXA only need a MOBILE PHONE,, many people have one of those these days.
I actually didn't use a Windows/Linux OS in the video. And instead of all of that, you can just buy a ready made Home Assistant box, and enjoy all the power of HA, without spending time to set it up. www.theverge.com/2021/9/16/22678088/home-assistant-amber-smart-home-hub-specs-release-date-price
What exactly is the problem? You cannot get the Hue Dimmer into pairing mode, or cannot use it in automations? I have 2 dimmer switches in use in this setup.
Excellent video! i have no experience with home assistant and i have my stuff already configured with google home, but i have the following issue: i have a phillips hue dimmer and bulbs from multiple brands. is it possible to configure ONLY the dimmer in home assistant, and use it in google home? i would like to keep all the bulbs paired with google instead of home assistant, but i can't find a way to add the dimmer to google home to control all the bulbs, any tips? Thanks for the help and the video!
I'll need more info to properly answer this question - but generally, it should be possible. You can control Phillips Hue from Home Assistant, and depends on what tech the dimmer is - it should be pretty easy to configure it with Home Assistant.
@@hml yeah I did, I figured it out, just have to set the automations for the device... I'm trying to figure out how I can switch the color 1 hue to the right when double clicking the on button. I also want to create a rainbow loop that transitions every x seconds whenever long pressing the on button. I already have the dim up/down and on/off switch working. I also want to create different moods based on double clicking the dim up/down (cycle between moods)
That's a shame, but honestly I'm not a fan of IKEA switches anyway, and you can use any ZigBee remote - for example, this one - www.amazon.com/Aeotec-SmartThings-Button-Zigbee-Control/dp/B095TW4TT8/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=zigbee+button&qid=1638870937&sr=8-2
Pushing a Button is no Automation. Let the Lights turn on when you arrive. That's automated. Also use your existing switches instead of additional above them.
Definitely! What I have no in my office is that when I enter the office - all the lights turn on, and the heating turns on depending on the temperature, and as I leave it - everything turns off. But all of this is too much for 1 video, and so I will post the 2nd part of this video soon - where I show how this is done. I also have a "On Air" sign turn on automatically when I jump on a video call, and that video was already posted.
To be honest, that's exactly what I did - I put my Hue hub to the trash, and never even got an Ikea hub, and just setup everything with Home Assistant and Zigbee adapter. I have such setups both at home and in the office, and it works prefectly, with less hassle.
Zigpy actually will update IKEA devices automatically, if enabled in the settings. For Hue, you'll have to download the firmware from the Hue site, but will still be handled pretty easily. github.com/zigpy/zigpy#zigbee-device-ota-updates
Maiden was my favorite band back when I was in high school 80s but I was always bother that live all there songs are up tempo, just a little to fast because they have so much music to play in 3 hours.
ive watched home assistant videos,,, i don.t want a new hobby of maintaining ... home assistant Philips HUE, MK2 HUB,, Lights + MOTION SENSOR = automated lighting, just walk in and the lights come on ...... SIMPLE ,, AND,, it works EVEN when the internet is down, with its own MESH network
If you just need lights and motion sensor, a Hue system is enough. My setup includes things like turning on the heating and light when I come near the office, turning lights automatically when I'm on a video call, turning off lights automatically when watching a movie, notifying me when the washing machine finishes, and so on. And all of that works perfectly without internet - not sure what it has to do with the internet, everything is local, using the same "mesh" network (ZigBee), even between IKEA, Hue and Xiaomi devices.
@@hml I fully apreciate Home assistent can do all this,, Its how it dose it and all the work needed to get it done,, Philips HUE, just works,, I also Use Amazon Alexa VOICE INTERFACE with one of her SKILLS,, so operate the HUE system if the Automatic aspects need to be changed, temporarily.
YES, this is a compound system autonomous Philips Hue ( Local EDGE ) & ALEXA ( Cloud ),, Maybe ,, Home assistent will become very easy to USE,, more people will migrate over and use it,, BUT at the moment its toooo much work. ok?
