My fav setup is my 6' 6" Uglystik in med with my 1979 Mitchell 300A. Still gets it done. I use baitcasters when I need to cast under obstructions ect but mostly use spinning gear. Cheers!
You’re so knowledgeable and I love watching your hard work producing Quality intelligence! Thank you very very much! I’ll keep watching so please keep recording!
I have tried a bunch of different makes and models of spinning rods, but the Shimano SLX 7" Medium - Extra Fast is my favorite. This thing fishes like a $200.00 rod. They usually retail for $99.00 but can be found on sale at times for $70.00 to $75.00. I will also share my opinion on a very very good overlooked spinning reel, the Piscifun Carbon X . They retail for around $80.00.
I second the Piscifun Carbon X reels although I suggest the 3000 size. Their models tend to be smaller than others. I own several and have yet to wear one out while walleye fishing in Lake Erie. My other favorite is the Shimano Spirex FG. I don't mind the double handle and got used to it with an older rear-drag Spirex. I just wish they made a 3000 size.
I was running a Daiwa exceler lt with 6lb braid on a Daiwa presso but the presso exploded into 3 pieces when a monster hit my inline spinner last month. I also run a Lew’s mach 2 with 20lb braid 6’9” medium fast, both have worked great from salmon fishing to trout fishing. I’m looking to upgrade my medium pole and people keep trying to convince me to get a baitcaster but, I would really rather not! I see people always dealing with backlash and other bs. The one thing I like about spinning reels is how versatile they are at throwing everything
I have a Sedona 2500 with 10lb braid as my kayak beater for saltwater creek fishing and bass fishing. I use a 7'6" medium light with it and have gotten everything from a 7lb largemouth to a 34" creek red, and I love it for my style of fishing. I think bass fishermen sometimes get too caught up in the details of a setup and end up with 5 rods that all accomplish the same thing. It's refreshing to see someone understand you can do a very large % of bass fishing with a fairly simple setup. The only thing I'd change is the line test. Powerpro is listed at 10lb but tests at closer to 18, so nothing in any freshwater lake in north America can really come close to breaking it with a competent fisherman on the other end. The 15lb test robs 4-8 feet of casting distance, so 10 or 8 is usually a bit more versatile.
As an old Southern boy (71) I have been what you would call a "power" fisherman all my life. Heavier line fishing heavy cover, moss, grass, pads, wood, etc. but I Do love topwater Rapala fishing. For that I have used spincast until I finally found the Bantam baitcaster by Shimano! That dates myself, huh? What a reel!! Nevertheless, many more balsam lures out there now and I've been entertaining the notion of upgrading my one Spinning rig. I've been eyeing this combo n that combo and trying to match em up myself without spending an arm and a leg and Nathan Quince, you Sir have really helped me out!! You've told me what you like and why you like it with plenty enough detail that makes sense to this old fisherman and I very much appreciate your experience and willingness to share it! I'll be going with the Shimano Sedona 3000 and a 7' medium action with Fast tip spooled with Hi-viz 15lb braid with a mono leader to keep the balsa lures floating high. Thank you Brother Nathan from your new old friend Johnny! God Bless!
Get the best spinning gear you can afford. It is supposed to excel at feel, subtlety, and fish fighting ability. I never understood why people spend big bucks on casting and try to go budget on FINESSE gear. I can live with a cheap flipping stick or frog rod, but I'll be damned if I get my heart broken because of a sticky drag on 6lb test.
I dont think fish care what rod and reel you use. Ive took a bamboo pole and tied line to it with the og hook worm and sinker and have caught fish. But theres a huge market for it and tbh buying and shopping for fishing gear is fun af. Im js dont over think it. If youre new go to walmart and get a shakespeare combo for $25 and youre set.
I grew up fishing spinning gear and did so for 40+ years. But I switched to bait finesse in 2022 and it has completely changed my fishing. There are a few situations i might do better with a spinning rod, but I haven’t picked one up in almost 12 months. I enjoy your channel, and appreciate all the great tips.
@@richardkeller6940 Bait finesse is using specialized shallow spool baitcasters to throw lures as light as 1 gram. I use it mainly for trout and bass. There are a few cases where i think spinning is still a better choice: float fishing, deep water / vertical drop shot or jigging most notably. Plenty of videos on my channel about BFS (bait finesse system).
Yeah I've only been fishing for 25 years but I only use a spinning reel due to the fact that although my IQ is above average my ability to retain muscle memory sucks so remembering to feather the spool on a baitcaster is very difficult for me. Whereas remembering to close the bail on a spinning reel is much easier plus I personally don't see the point in using anything other than a spinning reel when my personal best fish was caught on one which was a 10 lb channel catfish.
My current setups are a Sedona 2500 (with 20 lb braid) on a 7' Daiwa Tatula M/H. And a Daiwa Legalis 2500 (with 8 lb Seguar INVIZX) on a 7' Shimano Convergence M for lighter applications. The 8 lb line & Convergence were recently put to the test when a 5 lb largemouth buried itself in vegetation. I just used extreme patience and finally worked the fish free. And IMO, for the price, the Convergence passed with flying colors.
I only fish spinning rods and reels.I can fish a medium light to a medium heavy just depends on the cover and baits i am throwing..Braided line is the only way to go not only does it cast farther but last for a long long time.
I own a few Shimanos for my saltwater but I have to give credit to Okuma. I have a few for Bass fishing and I like that they make thicker bails. It feels sturdier.
My spinning gear.. 6' 6" St. Croix Premire MH, Shimano Nasci 3000 / 6' 6" St. Croix Premier ML, Shimano Sahara 2500. MH is spooled with 20 pound braid. At times I'll add a 15 pound copolymer leader or a 20 pound floro leader. ML is spooled with 10 pound braid with 8 pound copolymer leader.
Thanks Nathan. I'm pretty sure everyone has a similar set up maybe tweaked a little. They may like a 6'10" or a 7'1" and use 20lb or 12lb braid. I do have a spinning rod with 8lb co-poly (Yo-zuri Hybrid) for small cranks like the Otts Garage tiny and Fritzside 5 small squarebill and a few others. It's also good for small topwaters (Pop-Rs) and 1/8oz buzzbaits.
I'm currently building a spinning rod with those same specs to replace my old, broken Ugly Stik. I could've repaired it, but I'd rather have a new rod. :)
I love the Sedano and have the 3000, 4000 and 5000. The heavier ones I use for snapper and grouper fishing. I also like the Sahara and the new Miravel for finesse fishing.
@nathanquincefishing7122 is this mainly for bass fishing? Or could this setup be a good all purpose for other species like crappie, bluegill, catfish, etc?
My setup i used for generally almost for everything when it comes to spinning setup, is the G Loomis 7' ft Medium (842S SJR) rod pair up with the Shimano Vanquish 2500S spinning reel, it's crazy fun if you every get the chance to try this setup/combo. I'll throw from 1/16oz to 1/4oz lure weight range a general usage
@@bfishin2183 yeah… it’s not for everyone, but if you look it from the perspective of “you only lived once”, why not right? Plus I can always sell it later once I had my fill of joy
Thanks Nathan. I fish spinning gear a lot. But I’m always looking for fishermen I follow on RU-vid to commit to a specific rod. Looks like my Dobyns Fury bait casters are going to get a new stable mate!😂
Nice light spinning combo 👍🏼 💜 I have a ugly stick gx2 medium action spinning rod with a Daiwa Laguna LT Spinning Reel - LAGUNALT4000-C with 30lb braided fishing line for Pier fishing you ting I have a good combo for Pier fishing
Are you casting through your guides with that long of a leader? Also, what knot are you using for your braid to leader? Thanks for all the informative videos!
I'm looking for a good quality ! Ultralight fishing reel. ( Allow me to specify when I say ultralight I mean the weight of the entire reel ) Preferably around the 3 oz. of weight. With that being said, I expected to beat somewhat small. Was around 8 to 9 lb drag or better. What would you recommend? This will be for my backpack when I go hiking. I'll be fishing small Creeks streams and maybe the occasional small lake.
I haven't used a spinning rod in 10 years but my girlfriend loves the simplicity of it. My question is she wants to use finesse and heavier lures. We are catching big bass, catfish and carp. The medium 1/8 -1/2 rod seems to be ok but I was considering a medium heavy 3/16 - 5/8 so she can use many more lures. Basically I'm looking for an all purpose rod that will not wimp out in heavier lures and large fish situations.
Is there another spinning rod which you would suggest that would be similar? I would think that it could not have "micro" guides at the tip of the rod so that a leader knot would not get hung up on. A lot of the rods I have looked at have micro guides or guide inserts. Thanks
How critical is the fast action to the setup? Would a moderate fast still be as versatile/beneficial? Or is it like the length you mentioned, a little variance and it skews the rod?
I fish mf for trout. Fast in pretty much everything else. If you need to feel the bite the moderate fast action is far superior. I r un 4lb mono and have landed 5lb smallies with it as bycatch.
I do 99.9% soft plastic w/lead Jigheads in shore ocean fishing and surf fishing casting. Which is ONE? would you recommend from these 2 - Dobyns Fury Series Spinning Rods: FR 702SF 1/8 - 1/2 oz. Medium Light or FR 703SF 3/16 - 5/8 oz. Medium??? Please help me decide :) Anyone already have either of this rods and used with soft plastics please let me know your feedback.
@@manavoxprimaltv all I ever used was mono fishing line for years and caught my PB on it 6lbs 12oz. That being said I know it's not the best line for anything but top water, but it worked. I'm not switching to fluorocarbon to see if it helps catch more fish with senkos and crank baits. I'm just a weekend warrior anyway lol.
I have a St Croix Premier ML 7" with the same lure rating as yours ( 1/8-1/2oz) Line 6-10 lbs, combo with a Sahara, Wouldyou consider this an all purpose rod for being a ML instead of M?
I'm a Daiwa BG guy Nathan. I had a lot of Shimanos and granted I never spent a $100 on a reel before the BG but, I just found that my Shimanos just didn't last. My last venture with Shimano was a Sahara so, maybe I didn't give Shimano the same chance I gave Daiwa. Maybe the Nasci would be a fair comparison to my BG. Now, you can't drag me away from my BG's. I laugh every time someone is using a 7'3", 7 foot or even a 6'9" rod. I fish from the bank with trees and tight openings and thus have never gone beyond a 6 foot rod. My St Croix 6' Triumphs in Medium suit my bank fishing lifestyle.
Thanks so much for the helpful video! I’m in East Texas. Typically I am fly fishing but want to set up a good spinning rod as well. I’ve tried to find the link that you posted about the rod you mimicked? Can u please send me? I don’t seem to be having much luck hunting for a 7 M fast rod with those lure specs. Thatnks!
If you want one go to the store and buy one! Don’t buy one online at Penn site there site is a joke! You can’t talk to a person after you order one, don’t even leave a voicemail they don’t call back ! If they treat you like this when you order one you can imagine how the warranty works!!!
@@upsrg He made a statement at the beginning of the video stating the spinning reel is a necessity. I've yet to find a technique that I cannot use a bait caster as well or better. That's all.
