The only sustainable way to make money with jiujitsu.

There’s a really romantic idea that you can train and compete in jiujitsu and eventually you can make a living grappling.
The truth is the only way to thrive in jiujitsu and have it be your “job” is to operate a jiujitsu academy. It’s not even important to have a ton of competitive accolades. You can skip the grind of 10 years of brutal competition and use that time to establish business fundamentals and learn how to provide true value.
I was the highest paid grappler on earth for a a number of years and even that is dwarfed by the potential of one physical location providing the environment for people to enjoy jiujitsu.
My point here is that you can learn how to establish a recurring revenue business while being around the sport you love. And it’s really not as hard as it looks. Just like jiujitsu you only need a mentor and learning resources
I’ve spent the last few years building systems around how to operate an academy in the modern world, and I want to share this with those who want to also step to up to the highest order of grappling industry. Which is to be the facilitator of mat space AND grappling knowledge.
Dm me the word ACADEMY if you already are trying to create a thriving gym or if you are interested in becoming a gym owner one day. And check out what we’ve built at @legion_ajj and @jiu_jitsu_x to see what I’m all about with grappling business. or go to legionajj.com/

I remember years ago you posted an open question to yours fans. It was; should i keep competing or open a school. Idk if you competed again. You made the right choice and the school sounds cool.

I agree with what Keenan says here. However, what has helped his gym become so successful is what he did before opening his gym. The medals, competitions, etc, all of the things he mentioned. Sure, it is possible to open a gym when you have never competed in any major competitions, but if you are in an area like San Diego where there is a ton of other BJJ schools, you're better off having a big name behind you (i.e. CTA, Gracie Barra, etc) if you haven't made a name for yourself on your own.

@@fritzdagger And that's my point. There are so many but there are few, if any, that I believe are on the same level of success as you. I know guys who run their own modest size schools, but they still have to work a full-time job.

Theres no shortage of world champion schools here in NY and I'm not one of them But after being open only since last june I'm completely at capacity and putting a little over 2 grand in my pocket every week. I now find myself needing to hire teachers so I can put more classes on the schedule and stop turning away customers. Nobody outside of the jiujitsu community really cares about jiujitsu championships, it's mostly regular people looking for a fun way to exercise and learn some skills And so many of them have had bad experiences at these "championship" schools because of the environment they cultivate they it's almost like they're doing my advertising for me, they drive customers into my arms because they want jiujitsu but more importantly want a place that'll treat them right
@todd2324
@todd2324 2 года назад
@@sirpibble That's awesome, congrats on your school's success. I agree that most people just want to train. However, what I have seen is when people become more "familiar" with how BJJ is after training for a while (blue belt and above), they will sometimes look to join the bigger name schools, especially if they want a more diverse array of training partners, even if they may not want to compete. I've seen this play out in schools in both NJ and VA where I've trained. There is value in both. At smaller gyms, the advantage is usually more opportunities to connect with your coach or coaches. At bigger gyms, you have a more diverse array of training partners and more opportunities to bounce ideas off of others.

This is true, however, watch out for academies that are attendance based, meaning as a white belt you can't get your blue belt until there is a "sufficient record of attendance" rather than awarding new belts by skill alone. I strongly disagree with that type of gym philosophy, it suggests these teachers are trying to get as much money out of their students as possible. All of my fav grapplers like Gordon Ryan for example, never came up that way. They were not even tested for their belts, they simply progressed as they displayed adequate understanding of the game. Pretty sad that's considered the old school way of doing things, these days.
@Young.Supernovas
@Young.Supernovas 2 года назад
My gym awards stripes based on attendance, and then has a test for blue belt after you've earned your stripes. I think it's just a necessity given how high attendance is at the gym (as in, it would not be possible for the instructors to keep track of everyone's skill levels adequately). So the belt itself requires both knowledge of jiu jitsu and attendance, but the stripes between belts are just based on attendance.
@cheyennemeredith1174
@cheyennemeredith1174 Год назад
Another reason for factoring attendance is trust. Would you belt a stranger or a student you've only seen train several times, or with the darker colored belts for only a few months? I'm years away from ever promoting anyone to any rank other than giving them a spare white belt. I see more reason to not sign off on someone's belt without regular attendance or good rapport, even with cases of spectacular talent, skill, and charisma.

Instructionals are a good stream of income but you ultimately need to be teaching, training, fighting, doing seminars and filming instructional to have a healthy income. But a gym is orders of magnitude more profitable to focus on. 400 members at 250 a month plus the paid trial. A well run gym will do millions. Even Gordon will struggle to outpace a 500+ member gym.

So this video was one big infomercial for your shady affiliation program? Keenan Cornloser. If you want a successful BJJ gym, you do NOT need to pay a bloodsucking affiliation program to make money. Instead of paying royalty fees to people like this SoyBoyCornelius, you can charge a lower price and keep a little bit more money to improve your gym. Do you really think newbies care about the name? No, they care about the quality and the cleanliness of the gym. Also, seasoned jujitsu people know that unless you are training in the main academy, the affiliation name means nothing. That's it.

Hey Keenan, I share the same perspective about it, but I really don’t see the point of it yourself keep insisting and calling the “American Jiu jitsu”. As far as I know, you have been practicing Brazilian Jiu jitsu since you were a white belt, and for some reason you have started calling “American Jiu Jitsu”, wich would be fair, if there was any evident difference of the “American Jiu jitsu” that you are teaching from the Brazilian, just like the evident difference between the Brazilian and Japanese one. I might be missing the difference, maybe because I’m not really familiar with the American Jiu jitsu, but would be cool to understand the difference between them both other than just the name difference. Cheers
