If the flag of Sri Lanka counts, then so does the flag of Lithuania. By law, the "red" is described as "purpuro", which translates to "purple" or "magenta".

The problem with Luxembourgs flag is that they have to color it this way. If they made the blue more like the other blues you see in the UK, US, Russia, etc. you'd just get the Dutch flag.

Alright so Wikipedia says the Sri Lankan flag is maroon but Wikipedia itself defines maroon as a "brownish crimson" colour and defines crimson as a "rich, deep red" colour, Wikipedia also lists the RGB value of maroon as (128, 0, 0) which means it consists of 100% red

Is it just me or is Haiti’s flag is actually good with the white background in the symbol.I think it adds some good contrast to the dark blue and red.

Hate to break it to you, Toycat, but in art class, we've treated maroon as just another shade of red. If you're gonna make that maroon argument, you gotta make that same argument for the Bahamas with two aquamarine bands and Kazakhstan being turquoise. As for 8:11, that's a legitimate flag. It's not just the flag of the Norwegian Sámi but the flag of Sápmi and ALL Sámi people! It was designed by Astrid Båhl. The red part of the circle symbolizes the sun, the blue part the moon. The colors red, blue, green and yellow reflect the Sámi national costume. Green symbolizes nature, blue for water, red for fire, and yellow for the sun The thing about the Maldives flag is it used to EVEN simpler! The current flag was adopted when they got their independence from the UK, but when they first became a British protectorate in 1796 (which they did after kicking the Dutch out of Ceylon and included the Maldives as part of their influence, but there wasn't an official agreement until 1887), their flag was red...and nothing else. And before that from 1117 to 1796, they had one similar to Nepal's with just red! They did what Gaddafi did with his flag before it was cool.

About the Lion in Spain's flag: 1. It technically isn't pink, or at least it shouldn't be. The law about the Spanish coat of arms (law 33/1981) states in its first article that the lion is "purple", and the actual official colour assigned to it is commonly described as magenta or reddish-purple. But there's criticism around it saying it's too pink and too saturated, therefore too different from the traditional heraldic purple. 2. The Lion is king because it represents the old Kingdom of Leon. Which alongside Castille, Aragon and Navarra (and also Granada at the bottom if you wanna be picky) form the joint Kingdom of Spain.

I don't think your fix to the flag of Haiti works: it makes the icon less recognizable since there is no c9ntrast between the colors from the icon and thos from the background

Oh yeah the older version of the Sri Lankan flag the lion had a whip. And little known fact the lion in the flag represents the Sri Lankan Majority while the Orenge represents the Tamil minority and the Green represents the Muslim minority. The Christian/Burgher minority however only had a Bo leaf to represent them which downgraded them to a religion than their own ethnic group (which they were at the time.) If you have a Sinhalese grandmother you might want to ask her about the attitudes towards the Christian / Burgher community post indipendence.

Fun Fact: Haiti and Liechtenstein had the same exact flag (Blue top and Red Bottom) until the 1936 Olympics where both countries they realized they had the same exact flag, so after the Olympics Liechtenstein changed their flag because it was Haiti's civil flag, but Haiti changed it anyway

The red on our flag does indeed symbolize bloodshed, the bloodshed of Korean patriots against the Japanese and the invincible might of our people firmly united to support the Democratic People's Republic. If we include the flags of territories, another flag that includes pink is Turks & Caicos! Within the shield on its flag, there is pink on the queen conch shell! Regarding those Ionian Islands, Britain got them as a result of the aftermath of Napoleon's antics. France occupied them in 1807 and Britain attacked in 1809 and 1810. It has the Lion of St. Mark on the flag because the islands were historically Venetian. They were gifted because after signing the Treaty of London in 1864 with Greece, France and Russia, those who signed wanted to bolster King George I (who was an Anglophile). Plus, the people on those islands wanted to be Greek ever since Greece got their independence from the Ottomans in 1832.

The Spanish lion is just an early rendition for the pink panther. They wanted to try it on a national level before going global with the cartoons

Whilst I really don't buy the argument for the Sri Lanka flag being an exception to the red-white-blue trend, I will say that the list of exceptions changes depending on the language you're using to refer to these colors. There are languages that don't see pink as it's own color, and merely a shade of "light red", and on the opposite end, there are languages which consider dark blue and cyan to be distinct colors from each other. If you go by this interpretation, you can exclude a few more flags including Bahamas, Kazakhstan, Palau, Rwanda, and maybe another one that I missed.

I'm counting Bahamas if Sri Lanka counts. That's more green than blue anyway

I think that you can make your flag complex. Like get a kid to draw wales' flag & you can see that its wales. Likewise you could probably draw parts of the Venetian flag at least enough to recognise which flag it is since how many flags have those kind of tassels.

If you want bad flags, look at the US state flags. There are a couple of exceptions. New Mexico's flag is beautiful. But most are just very bad. The lion in the arms of Spain is a standard heraldic lion, save for the crown. If a blazon says just "lion" without any further details, this is what you should draw.
