The Only Way to Ride the Longest Train in the World

BRIGHT SIDE

Why is it that any time you have to stop your car and wait for a train to cross, it’s always when you’re in a hurry? Hey, could be worse - you could have to wait for a train that really is over a mile long! And to make things even more “fun,” there’s no fixed timetable.
So, the longest train in the world, measuring in at 1.5 miles (2.5 km), runs on the Mauritania Railway. Up until a few years ago, there was just one option for passengers to travel on this train, and that was to literally sit on top of it. Doesn’t exactly sound like my perfect vacay, but locals and adventurous tourists alike don’t seem to mind sitting on rocks for hours on end!

SUMMARY:
- This railway is incredibly important for Mauritania since the iron ore industry makes up half of all the country’s exports.
- If the train is empty and moving northeast to the mines, it takes 16 hours. If it’s fully loaded and headed to the coast, it’s 20 hours, almost an entire day!
- You can choose to take a bunk in the only passenger car at the end of the train. It consists of cabins with 6 bunks in each. It only costs $3…but don’t expect much for such a small fee.
- People take bunks on a “first come first serve” basis, so don’t expect to be assigned a specific bed.
- It’s also a good idea to catch the train on its way from the coast to the mine because, otherwise, the cars will be full of iron ore and that stuff makes some pretty powerful dust that’s hard to wash off your face and clothes.
- The Sahara isn’t always hot like many people think. It is during the day, but it can be freezing at night. The wind is pretty strong too, so it’s a good idea to bring warm clothes and a thermos with you.
- The Ghan runs for 1,850 miles (3000 km) across the entire continent, from the southern city of Adelaide to Darwin in the North. The journey takes 3 days and 2 nights to complete.
- America’s longest trains are neither passenger nor cargo. They’re those that once belonged to the Ringling Bros Circus!
- It took the circus crew about 6 hours to unload the lengthy train and 12 hours to set everything up for the show.
- How about giving the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway a try? Starting in the country’s capital of Moscow, you’ll travel more than 5,750 miles (9,250 km) over the span of a week
- If it’s not the length of the train or the journey but the speed that matters to you the most, then get yourself a ticket on China’s Shanghai-Maglev Train. It’s currently the fastest commercially operated train in the world.

Man you didn't do enough research. The longest train was in AU, using 3 GE AC6000CW, 6000 horsepower, Six Axle, Diesel Electric Locomotives. The three hauled 687 cars total. With 18K horses in all for the locomotives. That's the longest train in the world. But you did say until a few years later or something like that.

One of the few exceptions to the "power cars are usually called locomotives" rule are the diesel "power cars" on either end of a British Class 43 high speed train. I think they were dubbed power cars because they are never disconnected and used on other trains, and they are probably semi-permanently attached to the intermediate carriages. The French TGV trains also have power cars, with unpowered intermediate carriages. By comparison, the Shinkansen trains of Japan are electric multiple units with all or most carriage axles powered by motors. The price of using locomotives on a high speed train is greater rail wear from the heavy locomotive, compared to the alternative of spreading the weight of the motors across many more axles on a multiple unit train. None of that matters for the freight trains (goods trains) described in this video.

And here is a fun fact about The Ringling Bros Circus train; they actually pay the railroad to lease the locomotives, since they don't have their own locomotives, they may actually had some of their own well trained rail engineer and conductors. There are videos of these and if you watch multiple videos of them, they have different locomotives from Class I's like Norfolk Southern, CSX, BNSF, and Union Pacific, all major class I railroads.

There's plenty of freight trains in the US that are longer than the 1.5 mile long Mauritania train. Southern Pacific often ran trains of ~10,000 feet between LA and Houston, and the Kansas City Southern also ran some monster trains. However, they generally were around 10-12,000 tons, so the Mauritania train is heavier, but no longest. There are also a lot of coal trains coming out of the Powder River Basin of Wyoming in the range of a mile and a half long.

The legend lives on in the Sahara on down on the railway they call Mauritania. The train it is said never gives a good bed when the rails and the cars keep shakin' ya. With a load of iron ore 20,000 tons more than the long locomotive weighed empty, the people on board were traveling in hoards when the dust of the iron was plenty.

CSX, CN, and CP have been known to run 200+ car trains. The official longest train in the world ran in Australia (one time record) but this Saharan railroad regularly runs long trains and use some incredible cooling systems, larger radiators than an GEVO. And the RBBX units were definitely not the longest trains overall, but privately owned I believe is true. I saw both of them in one day in 2016, one at the Wiser Ave yard in Auburn MA and the other on my way to Washington.

The Sahara train with 1 small cabin with small uncomfortable bunks and iron ore cars where you may be sitting on sharp jagged ores, I will definitely say "pass" on that one. But I won't say "pass" and I will consider riding on the long all-passenger-car train down under in koala bear country

They should either construct a bridge over those tracks or make it a high speed train.

What’re you talking about “Longest Train” being in Africa!? The longest trains run on the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways ranging up to 2 miles long with at least 2 mid train DPU’s and two rear DPU’s and up to 8 leading Units. More than 400 cars are hauled but there can be up to 650-700 cars pulled. LONGEST TRAIN MY BUTOX!!

On March 16th, 2005 I took the Iron ore train from Nuuadhibuu to Shuum. Already there it had a passenger carriage (originally from Belgian Railways). Actually I wanted to go all the way to Zuuirat, but because of an accident of the train in the other direction my train could not go. (My writing of the town names gives the more real Arabic pronunciation.) I had to spent two nights in the desert. And believe me: Even in the night it was hot in the desert! It was not not not cold at all as it always is told by someone inexperienced. Only shortly before sunrise it had cooled down a little bit that you could enjoy. So, don't belive anyone telling you it is always cold at night in the desert. That you can have sometimes (I had it fx in Tunisia and Algeria, but only in winter time). Of course, in Shuum people took advantage of the accident, taking a lot of money to bring me to the next bigger town.

Another train that goes to different states is an auto train. Do you know that I went on one? It was from Florida to Virginia. It took us a day to get there. Did you go on an auto train? Please like if you did. :)

Are you kidding me? 1.5 miles?! I’ve seen trains 2 miles long. Also, there have been trains in the USA that were 16,000 feet. That’s 3 miles. 200-210 cars? I’ve seen 240. Definitely not the longest train in the world. Oh, by the way, trains in the USA are being made longer now.

It’s not the worlds longest train, Western Australia operates the worlds longest trains. In the Pilbara. We have ore trains over 3km Long, we set the record for a 6Km long train.

You really need to rethink the titles of these clips. The title implies passenger trains and yet you spend a lot of time talking about freight.
