ABOUT ME: I'm James Dunne, a runner, sports rehabilitation therapist (similar to physical therapist) and coach based in the UK (Norwich and London).
Since 2007 I've been working with athletes focusing specifically on helping distance runners and triathletes overcome injury and improve performance through developing their individual running technique.
Running biomechanics and physical therapy are real passions of mine. I love to help runners run strong and stay injury free.

Base training will only take you so far. I find carefully calculate threshold training for my athletes to be the real difference maker.

I added rope jump, calf strengthening with heavy weights, glutes squads, legs press, and some other legs exercise with my own weights, more rest days between running and all of that increased my speed, joints health and feeling( also worked on technic)

I had found the same.. I replaced 2 days of running with 2 days of heavy weight HIIT, and shaved a minute a mile off! I need to get back to that.

I’m a solitary runner who welcomes the opportunity to keep up with music and podcasts. There is a safety issue for me as I live and run where there are very few pavements alongside roads. What I’ve done to reduce risk is to buy earbuds with a mono setting so I only wear one bud and keep the other ear for hearing approaching traffic. The other tips are good too, thanks, though I think organised events aren’t cheap and, personally, if I’m shelling out my hard earned to enter one, I’m only going for the PB. They have given me confidence to race and it’s something which gives added purpose to my running year. I like the sound of “broken tempo” runs; I tend to go out for at least 50 minutes each time so I’ll extend the middle section to suit. 👍

As an older runner and just getting back into running (Parkruns). I've found that getting the aerobic side of things right, is very important. Thanks James. 👍

Swimming is great for your breathing patterns , plus water is denser then air so it’s a win win for your body and lungs

What should the ratio of "easy" runs to speed work be per week? I'm aware there are many differing opinions, but I'd just like some advice! For context: I'm a 20yo female who started running in march of this year and am currently trying to improve my 10k time which is currenlty at 62 mins. I'm currently only able to do 3 runs per week since I also do a lot of strength training for injuriy prevention.
