This dispatch is from Gibraltar, a British enclave on the southern coast of Spain. Gibraltar is home to Europe's only population of wild monkeys, the Barbary Macaques. They've lived on the island for hundreds of years, and have become part of its history, but nobody knows how they got there. Their origin is shrouded in legend.
Vox Borders is a new international series focused on telling the human stories that emerge from lines on the map. I've traveled to six different border locations to produce a final set of documentaries. In lore yes, but real people had to make that decision, they probably chose the name of the character first and then decided such details in the backstory.

I am from Gibraltar, and it does the heart good to see it being mentioned by people that seem to know what they're on about. Those Barbary apes and the views from the rock spell home for me, and correct, Gibraltar truly is a unique place that is a melting pot of British, Morrocan, Indian, Jewish, and plenty more nationalities that all live in harmony.

The monkey myth - lose the monkeys, lose the Rock - is almost word for word like the myth about the ravens at the Tower of London, and both with the twist of Winston Churchill ordering the animals protected for the sake of the nation.

I know these monkeys all too well. When I visited Gibraltar this past June, a little one jumped onto my neck at St Michael's Cave and started nuzzling me. All the tourists around me just stood & took photos (great help guys!) but I managed to slip my backpack off while the monkey carried on playing with it.

Havent seen the video yet, but let me guess... is it Gibraltar) :DD I was born and raised in Europe so I know my fair share about the wildlife here. You can even visit the polar bears on the Norwegian island Svalbard or you can visit the deep forests by the alps near Geneva... One thing you have to see for sure tho, is the Marble Arch in Paris. Truly beautiful. Would also like to see the rest of the world some day, any suggestions?? ;) Have to be when my wallet grows a little bit bigger tho ;D

One of my favourite books as a kid was Scruffy by Paul Galico, a fictional story about the Gibraltar Barbary macaques during World War II.

It's really nice place. Two years ago I spent a couple of hours walking around Gibraltar like you. I remember this stairs 0:21 which is the shortest way to go down to the town however a lot of monkeys were sitting and relaxing there and did not want to move away at all. I was afraid that they could get angry or they may have fleas which will jump on me so I took normal road to get to the town.

I'm confused as to why there isn't more information known about the monkeys. This would be a very simple genetic test. They would just have to get their DNA sequence and compare it to the other monkeys. They will be able to see if they were a recent relatives from the other ones in Morocco or if they really did come millions of years ago when there was Land and ice bridges.

Although you did put some clarifications, the local people will not be happy with you. "Which is part of the mainland of Spain" - it's better to say, it's part of Iberia, bordered with Spain. It does still have some fairly major strategic use. 1) British submarines can stay further south much easier without having to go all the way back. 2) The UK is currently waiting on new aircraft carriers to come in to use in a couple of years. Until Gibraltar is extremely useful for landing planes a 1000 miles from the UK.
