Played Birkdale in 1987 a 5 marker from Melbourne Australia and I’ve played the great sandbelt courses there, my favourites being Metropolitan and Kingston Heath. I played 6 of the Open courses in this trip, twice at St. Andrews. Birkdale from that day on became my favourite course. I birdied the first and had 77.
