The voice acting of all the characters griefing was amazing. I'd never thought I'd get so emotional over something I knew was gonna happen.

Damn. I literally made that my first thought in my head on my first playthrough.

Pretty much everyone in the main cast has gone or will undergo damaging trauma. Bernie's is pretty extreme, but some characters give her a run for her money. In no particular order: SPOILERS IM WARNIN YOU SHOVE OFF! -Edelgard was one of eleven children of the royal family, and the only one to survive to adulthood -Lysithea was experimented on as well, losing much of her family and drastically shortening her lifespan -Raphael lost his parents do to intrigue they weren't even the main target of, and Ignatz feels deep guilt about his own parents surviving -Dimitri lost his best friend, his father, and stepmother in an attack that ALSO resulted in near genocide, and cannot cope with all that loss without turning towards revenge -Leonie loses her mentor -Marianne wishes for death because she carries a cursed crest -Dedue lives solely for Dimitri since his family was killed in the tragedy of Duscur, and regularly weathers intense racism -Felix lost his brother, which made him deeply cynical and focused entirely on his own strength -Ingrid lost her fiancée, and is constantly pestered by her father with proposals from new suitors -Mercedes had a troubled upbringing, and her brother is the freaking death knight -Ashe lost his parents, resorted to thievery to make ends meet, was brought into a noble house... and then, depending on the route you're on, takes part in murdering his adoptive father and villagers he knew. Seriously, wtf Intelligent Systems? -Sylvain's brother abused him for having a crest, and he subsequently developed a hatred towards women because he feels his crest is more valuable than himself -Annette is estranged from her dad -Petra's father died in a war with the empire, and she's being used as political leverage at the monastery -Ferdinand eventually loses his lands and title, and is too late to safe his father when they try to rescue him. -Dorothea was turned out of a noble house as a bastard child, lived on the streets, was discovered as a songstress and then hit on by the same people who turned her out -Caspar feels immense guilt for the actions of his father in the wars the Empire waged against Brigid and Dagda -Bernadetta was conditioned to try and be perfect by her father but always found wanting, so she became a recluse who fears human contact and always blames herself for anything -Catherine was estranged from her family and had to basically execute one of her friends in service of the church -Shamir lost a loved one in the war with the empire -Seteth lost a wife, Flayn lost a mother, and they subsequently hide their identities for fear of being targeted by TWSITD -Alois, big hearted as he is, cannot stop thinking about the people he kills in combat -Claude grew up an outsider to two cultures, being the son of Almyran and Alliance royalty -Cyril was a child soldier and indentured servant before coming to the monastery -Manuela has low self esteem because her glory years cane and went without finding love -Rhea lost most of her family and saw them turned into weapons wielded by her enemies, then lost her last hope of being able to see her mother again Probably more stuff happened too, but I haven't seen all the supports in the game yet.

@@ikoukuhn Yeah, both games have three writers but it seems like they decided ahead of time what the lords will act like, and since there are two clear antagonists(TWSITD and Edelgard) it leaves the stories open to a more natural progression for each route.

He’s actually a good writer but he went WAY overboard when he wrote Fates. He pounded out like 1300 manuscript pages for the rough draft of Fates, so I’m guessing it was just sloppy and excessivez

Yeah, there's definitely more character involvement, and the cutscenes are crazy good. But overall, it's a very satisfying route considering the character arcs.

Which is funny because they promoted BE so much - but GD and BL are more thoroughly fleshed out.

I think the only thing done wrong is that they don't settle TWSITD in Blue Lions. Do I want a route where all three lords live? Yes, because fuck Claude being the ONLY one who can survive through all of them. Let me save Dimitri in more than one route (and Edelgard too, I guess)...but if not that, at least let the Blue Lions confront those who were ACTUALLY responsible for Duscur in an epilogue type of thing at least. Don't even gotta let me play through it. Just wanna know it was DEALT WITH in Blue Lions too as I find it the biggest flaw of the route as it's a hole in several native character arcs. Church being revealed in Golden Deer is fine. Let them be world lore-heavy and Blue Lions be story/characters-heavy with Black Eagles (CF) being what would've happened if you side with the Empire.
