An antiques dealer comes up with a clever way to raise money to pay off a loan. But things won't be as easy for the shop owner the second time around.. or will they?
"The Orderly World Of Mr Appleby" Dir. by James Neilson
Antiques dealer Laurence Appleby (Harris) kills his wife in order to get her inheritance. Since he still has debts, he woos and marries wealthy heiress Martha Sturgis (Mundy). When Martha refuses to give him money, he tries to kill her, but she is prepared for him. Martha and her lawyer have evidence that Appleby killed his first wife, and if anything happens to Martha, her lawyer will go to the police. Robert Harris always good in these kinds of roles. I haven't seen him in alot of things but probably more than I remember. Don't think I've ever seen him as a totally-good person. He played a pyschologist in the Gregory Peck movie "Mirage", where he wasn't evil or devious but still rather stern & suspicious. He was in another TV Hitchcock, whose title I forget, but it starred British-actress Wendy Hiller. He's quite-likable until something's revealed at the end. At first-glance, most women likely would find Mr. Harris to be rather unattractive as a potential suitor or spouse but upon further-exposure he exudes a kind of dignity & charm, as well as a somewhat-lilting or hypnotic-sound to his voice, even a certain handsomeness in a less-traditional way. In this episode, one wonders if Appleby would've had the strength to pull-out those rugs with a person standing on them but I suppose it's possible. As a student of ancient-history, I can sympathize with the man's obsession for his priceless-antiques. Good episode!

There was an excellent remake of this in the series Tales of the Unexpected. Elizabeth Spriggs played Miss Sturgis totally differently, as a large, domineering Gorgon of a wife who was in no way going to allow Appleby to abrogate his, ahem, conjugal duty. In addition, the remake gave Miss Sturgis a fascinating and unguessable ulterior motive for marrying Appleby.

Interestingly, Hitchcock's was actually the second TV adaptation of this story. In 1950, it had been adapted for an early series called 'The Web' (which had given the episode the simpler title 'The Orderly Mr. Appleby'). And the title character in that adaptation had likewise been portrayed by an actor named 'Harris' (Jonathan Harris, in that case).

In the original short story, Mr. Appleby had killed six wives before Martha, for inheritance and insurance money to pay off his debt and running his store. In the book he killed the six of them not by pulling rugs from under their feet, but by breaking their necks using a snapping technique he learnt from a forensic medicine book. Then he reported the "accidents" to authorities, saying his wives slipped on rugs and falling down broken their necks. All six wives. (Why the authorities did not suspect him before is a bit unrealistic IMHO). The book and this Hitchcock Presents episode are in agreement with the ending. Mr. Appleby did not kill Martha Sturgis (his seventh wife in the book, his second wife in this TV episode). Martha's high heels slipped on the slippery rug as she's going to answer the phone. She slipped and fell and broken her neck. She's the only one among Mr. Appleby's wives who really died by slipping and falling.

😂😂😂 What in the world are we gonna do with Alfred? I thought Mr Appleby had met his even change, looks like he'll be paying for past sins now.

the "Tales of the unexpected" version of this story is much better in my opinion. Mrs Appleby has a different character... much more sneaky and villainous. And its kinda steering the viewer to have some kind of sympathy for Mr Appleby.
