Holy shit this is my childhood. We had apple 2’s in grammar school.. this would have been around 1991. Our school had really old equipment until the original funky colored iMacs came out.
This brings back memories of elementary school back in the early 90's. Our computer lab was in a classroom trailer, and we would have computer class once a week. I always looked forward to playing this.
A game that needs no introduction - Especially given the many fan games that play similarly to this or even the Switch remake. I first discovered this game through "Steam Train" on Game Grumps back in 2019. It later prompted me to play the DOS version. I was surprised that despite how primitive it is, it still manages to be a fun educational game. The randomization makes each playthrough really intense as literally *_anything_* can go horribly wrong if your oxen so much as take a single step; Getting mumps or dysentery, a thief can steal your clothes or your wagon could inexplicably catch on fire. A clever way to represent the dangerous trek to the Willamette Valley in the form of a video game. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
I remember playing The Oregon Trail back on a computer at the Children’s Museum when I was young. By the way, I grew up with several classic educational computer games such as Putt-Putt Travels Through Time, Spy Fox In Dry Cereal, School House Rock!: Grammar Rock!, Winnie The Pooh Activity Center, and Living Books: Arthur’s Computer Adventure. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! 💻
damn now this brings me back. I remember still a computer lab time in early elementary school where we go to choose floppy disks and then play them on an apple 2e. The goal was always to choose your disk fast enough so you could go get one of the color Apple 2Es instead of the monochrome ones. Fuck i'm getting old.
the version i remember playing most growing up. We had this in the computer lab. There's also another game I played around the time that I could never figure out the name of...you played as robots and it had to do with math, I think. You would race from the top screen to the bottom.
i remember seeing lots of games like that while trying to find an emulation of this version of the game in-browser, all of them are made by the same company that made this one (MECC) but i can’t remember the titles.
Personally, I saw more horror elements in this franchise than even most true horror series. You never knew when disaster could strike, either in the form of the dreaded cholera (for the record, dysentery's overrated) or a rattler bite killing a party member suddenly. It was that tension of not knowing what was around the corner, if there was even anything around the corner, that would drive any wannabe pioneer like me insane.
i’m imagining a game like this but your party slowly gets more and more insane to the point where they escape with soup-on-the-side and the hunting minigame gets infested with horrifying eldritch creatures
In college once a semester I would gather the roommates bust out Oregon Trail on our living room TV, put everyone’s name into the wagon party and cross the trail together. Always super fun getting the guys together yelling at the screen as they would be bitten by a snake or we’d go hunting. Also this is by far the superior version of hunting. The newer versions of Oregon Trail that are mouse based point and click hunting is lame IMO.
I grew up in Vancouver Washington (the end of the Oregon Trail) as an 80s/90s kid and didn’t know it was a popular game in other states until I went to college.
@@NintendoComplete Hard to believe the most common ailment from settler times and instant game over trope would become a meme well into the 2010s to now.
@@Jayyy667 Always a notable game trope. Even though I played this in school back in the 1990s, I still recall Charlie(aka Penguinz0) having played this as well. Probably the funniest adventure he ever did.
_"Impassible trail. Lose 5 days"_ *WHAT* *[Goes hunting for food to make up for the loss]* _"Impassible trail. Lose 8 days"_ *OH FOR F--* _"health: good"_
just keep an eye on your food amount if you feel it's too low start hunting for more 39:33 he actually lost 4 days because of impassable trail not 5 and then again impassable trail lost 8 days additionally you recover health as you just said it make sure you have enough food
Does the new version feel more drawn out or is it just me? Maybe it’s also the stopping so a character can jump for joy every other time they’re cured of something
This is still fun to this day but when youre REALLY ready for the trail try the 5th edition, thats the reeeeeal game. Also theres a new one out thats pretty fun.
