I had friends who had Apple IIs in the early 80s and was so jealous given the great games they had. I was always impressed with how developers got so much out of these machines.
Nice list... Brings back memories... Some of my personal (somewhat) obscure favorites on there... Aztec, Bolo, The Bilestoad and Rescue Raiders... Perhaps even Castle Smurfenstein. Not sure if other platforms had those... but I remember particularly enjoying those titles. Thanks for list.
Aztec was ported to other systems ... the C64 port is particularly weird looking. AFAIK, Bolo and The Bilestoad are Apple ][ exclusives. The Bilestoad is particularly infamous for the level of piracy. Almost all Apple ][ gamers have played it, but it sold very few copies.
Do you remember a pc game called Dreadnoughts? It was mostly a text game with minimal graphics out around the 80's. The Bismarck would chase after convoys while trying for a specific convoy.
So many noteworthy games either originated on the Apple ][ or were designed with Apple ][ limitations in mind (such as Autoduel). This list is missing the genre where the Apple ][ arguably had the biggest legacy - CRPGs. Ultima, Bard's Tale, Wizardry, and Wasteland all started off as Apple ][ exclusives. Yes, THAT Wasteland (which also served as inspiration to Fallout). Also missing are wargames, and wargame/CRPG hybrids, such as Roadwar 2000. Apple ][ was really big with these. However, omission of this formerly major computer game genre is more understandable, seeing as the genre has never really broken out to mainstream popularity. Heck, even the RTS genre has just sort of faded away into obscurity. But RPGs are a big omission, considering its massive influence in both North America and Japan (the Japanese RPG industry was inspired by Ultima III, originally an Apple ][ exclusive).
That was a decent selection. It's been far too long since I've had an Apple ][ system set up. I need to clear off some space and rectify that. I miss playing those.
Things had to have been a lot different back then in terms of non-licensed games. Sneakers looks fun, and the F-16 game looked quite complicated. Great video
