This story is one of the most important stories in Okinawa's history. Not only is it the story for how Okinawa became apart from Japan, but it's also the story of the Ryukyu Kingdom crest, as well as how as why Karate started. I'm not even sure if it's true, but it's an excellent story.

Very good video, my mom is Okinawan and she would tell me all kinds of stories of Okinawa like the tricksters Kijimuna and her families castle ruins (Agena) but I honestly never knew how important the Ryukyu symbol was

The fighting style they brought back wasn't known as karate it was called "Te" I think it was actually the Okinawan word for "Chinese" and "Hand" The word "Te" means "Hand."

The story I remember from my sensei was that there was only one envoy, and when he was brought to the oil pot, the emperors guards were on his left and right, and he jumped into the pot pulling the two guards with him.

Good story and well done video. There is no evidence that samurai ever studied Karate and while many versions of that origin story exist, the Hidari Gomon is also found on ancient temples in Korea and Tibet so it probably is an old Buddhist symbol that was adopted.

I am very surprised at the size difference of Okinawa compared to mainland Japan. I always pictured Okinawa as much bigger. It's like Rhode Island compared to Alaska.thank you

Excellent story. Very informative and even if it isn’t the only version of the origin of the symbol it’s certainly the one I will always remember first. Also I liked the balance of in front of the camera narration and the edited together video clips. I personally like the style of your videos still including you talking to the camera, and not just becoming a faceless voice talking over spliced together video.

Interesting. If you get the chance, I highly recommend a visit to the Okinawa Prefectural Museum in Naha in the Omoromachi district. The museum is very well done and I enjoyed my visit there three years ago. Also, I am the last person on this earth who should say anything about pronunciation of Japanese words, but I noticed you pronounced karate like most Americans, including myself before. Americans say "karati" when it is actually karate, which I think means open or empty hands. Sort of like Americans say kerioki, when it should be karaoke, which means empty orchestra I think. I could be wrong. Just thought you might like to know. Take care

I've passed by that museum a number of time, I haven't gone in there yet though. One of these days I will. Yes, you are right about the pronunciation, but I choose to purposely pronoun it the English way of "Karati". I guess my thinking was most of my audience is American, so I wanted to make sure people know what I was talking about. Thinking back though I probably should have said it right, or at least mentioned both ways of saying it. 😅 Either way, thanks for letting me know.

Awesome story! If you have a chance to also research another Okinawan hero by the name of Tobi Asato. Back when I was young , saw a documentary about an Okinawan man trying to fly even before the Wright Brothers. Now I cant seem to find much in the net about him for whatever reason.

The art is called Tang Hand from Tang dynasty China. Karate is warfare; no sport.
