A boss fight where Kratos has to fight his younger self, and tells Atreus “this fight is mine” and the entire time young Kratos ridicules Atreus for being a weak son. And teases him. And old Kratos stops holding back would be cool. Everyone could see what young Kratos was like

How could Athena control Kratos? She lacks any mind control or possession powers, she doesn't have illusions or emotion manipulation powers. Hell, she isn't even a good liar.

Apollo was the god who dealt in prophesies in Greek myth, not Athena. Also, I believe the mask is inscribed with Egyptian hieroglyphs, as well as Norse, Greek, and I think Japanese lettering.
Athena and Zeus did have pre-cognition powers in the novels tho. Apollo only is the god of prophecy due to Zeus blessing, which he also can withhold and leave him mortal and powerless.
I still believe the theory that Odin asked tyr to translate the mask since he had been all around the world and was the only one who could interpret it, but he refused, and was imprisoned for it

If this *is* true. Then wouldn't her setting up Kratos with Faye ultimately be a mistake? Kratos being previously a war general and God of War gave him the might and charisma necessary to inspire those around him. Given the extreme influence Faye and by the end of the game Atreus has over him, doesn't this mean that she's essentially loosened her leash on Kratos and not only that, but also given him the very character traits required to ascend himself? Not to mention that his very existence, given the mural at the end of the game, will also inspire other Gods to exhibit the traits he had, thus expanding the number of Gods that could potentially ascend?
Maybe Atreus is only a temporary key to killing Odin as mentioned in the vid, after which Athena may try to dispose of him which will by extension cut the last string holding Kratos from his younger self's fashion of bloodlust & thus dragging him further from ascension, blinded by pure rage he'll become more easily manipulatable into killing all the other pantheons. Obviously her plan's flaws will come out at some point allowing Atreus to survive & preventing Kratos from being blinded by anger
It's not true. It was stated Odin had it since he was a young god and Athena wouldnt of been dead at the time. Mimir and Odin proves this theory wrong. Just because the mask glows green doesnt mean its something made by giants just because Faye had glowing gold powder.

I didn’t even notice that it had Greek letters. What a wonderful way to connect the games. I think perhaps maybe the Greek gods are older than other pantheons. Mimir obviously knew of Zeus and exclaimed at the prospect of Kratos being his son.
He even says Athena was a dead giveaway to him being Greek. He knew about the ghost of Sparta thing which means it had to of happened way before he got put in the tree.

I thought that Greece was set in like 300 BCE and the new games take place closer to 1000 CE. But, the developers make it seem like they’re actually in separate universes.
There is a time gap of 115-150 or even 200 years between God of War 3 and God of War 4. God of War Lore and Legends say that Kratos come to Midgard 115 years before God of War 4. The Tyr Temple was in the Lake for 150 years and there are a vase that show Kratos revenge on Olympus and the first greek survivor who start to rebuild Greece.

Barlog say in first interviews of GOW18 that the game set much time before Vikings Era and he say when Vikings will come to Scandinavia, the Gods will be long gone.

Athena wasn't the Goddess of Prophecy, that was the Titan Goddess Phoebe who controlled the Oracle of Delphi, and Apollo was the Greek God of Prophecy.
I think this depends on how TIME works in the Realm Athena ascended too. If its able to be malleable, Athena could very well have manipulated Odin when he was Young
I think it is kind of implied that the Norse pantheon is much younger than the greek pantheon so this could be possible without any heavy time manipulation. They state that Odin has only been pulling his bullshit for maybe 100-300 years while Kratos has to be much older than that by this point
@@johnmeskill4636 Well he has been alive for a long time. In 2018 they mentioned lifespans about Surtr and the realms being verry old. Its very hard to pinpoint how old each pantheon is but the "universes" they live in are definitely several thousand years old each at a minimum
I think atreus's ability to read multiple languages easily is a great way to have him interact with other pantheons without needing to settle into their culture as much as kratos did to learn to read a new language
Maybe, for the next game, Thor gets transported to a higher plane of existence, since he changed before dying. Athena sees Thor there and realizes Kratos must’ve wiped out that pantheon as well and finds a way to come back and take revenge on him. Maybe she goes after Atreus who is on his own journey, and Kratos hears that his son was kidnapped and Has to go save him

It would be insane for Athena to be the final boss of the entire series. Consider that she is a god of war, but she represents the wisdom needed in war. It would be a brilliant conclusion to the series.
I feel like this stuff is a stretch. I have a feeling that the mask is something more. It had more than just Greek on it so it has to be linked to the creation of all the other mythologies. I believe that it will be a key for the future as there are still answers needed (like who blew the horn in 2018) so maybe we'll see.

The ending of Ragnarok set up the next one to be about Atreus' journey to find his people. Perhaps we'll see more of the rift and possibly Athena manipulating Atreus in some form of way.
could be because kratos talks about how the faye he knew was different than the one described fighting thor and was different than the one freya remembers as well. that could mean athena was acting as her🤷🏻♂️
I love the idea of that higher plane of existence having Lovecraftian effects on the gods themselves. The brief moment you interact with the rift bestows upon you such an impression that it basically changes your perception of reality and completely hooks you on the path of opening the rift, no matter the cost.

An excellent video and finally someone is talking more and more about the mask which shouldn’t be ignored at all. Athena is someone not to forget about, specially the fact that she is in a higher power as seen in comics as well. Athena is wise af in the mythology and hence this shouldn’t be surprising
@Nelson_ Rebel He attacked Kratos because, at the time, he intended to use Pandora. That would have resulted in her death. That was his only time to act before Kratos could do anything.

i do NOT like the idea that someone is still pulling their strings because then it invalidates the entire norse saga and their ultimate theme: that fate is created by our own choices and not some web of prophecy and inevitability. the idea that kratos' victory over his own nature and thus, his previous fate is a false one is terribly depressing and unsatisfying. athena still being around in some form, sure, but let kratos and atreus have this

Only if Time works that way in the Ascended Realm. Time could work completely different in the Realm that lies beyond. "Time" could just be as easy to travel as a location for Athena

@@nelson_rebel3907 This is probably the case. Cory Barlog said that Athena was corrupted by some power or entity and Odin see and heard something in the Rift, so there is a possibility that a much bigger evil is behind this.
I think that there is a creature that controls Athena as well. And that same creature wanted Odin as well. But the mask probably originated from Ymir? Because when he died, the rift appeared. Meaning that Ymir died in a selfless act?
Cory Barlog say that some power or entity corrupted Athena when it ascended , so you are probably right. About the mask, there are signs of Greek, Egyptian,Japanese writings, so i don't think Ymir is really connected.
So if "Gods dying in selfless acts" is Cory's explanation as to why they enter that higher plane of existance, that now explains why Thor's body disappears. He died selflessly standing up to Odin for his family. And hed be the only Aesir to have died selflessly. Freyr also died selflessly but hes Vanir, so possible he too could be in this "higher plane"
I mentioned in another video that it wasn’t made clear if Athena was purely a vision when Kratos reclaimed his blades or if she was actually following him. I think there has to be more narrative around Athena.
This was my biggest disappointment with Ragnarok, it did not give us anything else involving Athena, I would’ve been happy with just a tease, or confirmation that it was in his head, but we still need to know what she’s doing because she should still be out there
This is huge. Also means Odin could've just chatted w kratos and got the answers... that's CRAZY. There's always ANOTHER WAY. Does anyone feel like Odin could have been better if he just had known what a selfless act could do for him? And how would that obsession could've changed him positively?

If I remember correctly, Odin has that mask (one piece) and knew the rift when he was still young, how did Athena manipulate everything involving those pieces at that time? Is Athena older than Odin? Or is the Norse gods age faster than Greek gods? What do you think? My guess is: Athena has some sort of time-traveling powers (since she exists in a higher plane) and manipulate it at that time.
Time traveling no don’t think she does but she is a higher plane of existence so I say she can see all time and is not in any specific time but instead is in every time at the same time

I always thought that the magic from the rift and the mask looks waaayyy too much like Athena's magic, and this theory has been in the back of my mind since I played the game.
I just want to see the full 100% strength of new Kratos. Like Athena does something that makes it seem like Atreus dies. Then Kratos looses his cool and starts Greek pantheon 2.0. but I understand that he's changed. It's just that I just want to see some shit that makes you want to punch the sun
Wouldve been cool to find this out from the game instead of a youtube video. The tear was literally just a macguffin in the plot and nothing was revealed about it in the game.
Remember the language written on the mask is Latin so I don’t think Athena made that mask probably Tyr found that mask when he traveled and that’s how Odin imprisoned him
I would've liked to see Athena again in this game. They even mention Kratos speaking to her at the beginning so it's weird they never did anything with it. I thought for sure Odin would've used the mask and ended up resurrecting Zeus or Athena under his own control or just as an ally. I also thought we would have Thor by our side at the end of the game and we'd see him finally be a man free of Odin and able to be the family man he wanted to be.
If someone else manipulated the mask and led Atreus to Garm, I think it is Faye. As a Jotnar, she would be a God, and she died trying to break her husband and son out of a prophecy that would end in her husband's death; I think that qualifies as doing something good for someone. So Faye could have ascended to the higher plane of existence and is subtly trying to assist Kratos and Atreus against Athena. Either by giving Kratos visions first in the wellspring of souls, then again while he is asleep, or again by guiding Arteus to Garm, knowing that would make the perfect vessel for the soul of Fenrir that was in Atreus' knife.

Mask has the same spectral glow as Athena. My long shot theory is Athena is somehow connected to it and the reason only Atreus is able to use it is because I believe that mask will show Atreus Kratos did to his first family. Kratos never told him and that will play a huge part in what I believe will be a fight between Atreus and Kratos. Kratos might end up killing that kid….
Idk about it being Athena. She went mad with power when she ascended so perhaps this is Ymir’s quiet influence. Since time in the after is relative it can be either of them but only Ymir seems like the type to want to do good & stop Odin. He could’ve been bestowing knowledge to the giants via prophecies & that includes the mask
You know... that makes me think... Atreus falling ill in the first game, where it requires you to get the heart of a guardian of hel... sounds to me like a curse that Athena could've casted onto boy. Because then Kratos is forced to bring out his blades again. To be her monster.
The only thing that doesnt line up is that, if it was inscribed with greek characters... why didnt kratos become extremely skeptical? And why wouldnt atreus have asked kratos about it, if he learned greek writing from him?? I know kratos didnt really come into contact much with it... but still. I feel like seeing their home language in an artifact found in the norse world would freak them out even just a bit..?
Wouldnt it be badass if in the next GoW game when Atreus embarks on his own journey and meets his half sister who died in the first GoW game and ended up being resurrected behind the scenes by a Greek God before Kratos destroyed Zeus. In turn Kratos's daughter would be holding a grudge against Kratos for his actions and leaving his homeland in ruins. I was hoping they would touch a little more on Kratos past and allowing more callbacks to the Greek mythos. Would've been nice to have a dream sequence in which the player gets to play a past memory of when Kratos was in Greece with his wife and daughter and maybe wake up and tell Atreus about his half Greek sister who died.
A part where Kratos stops holding back, and his beard slowly begins to fall apart and reveal his goatee would be awesome. And it would be cool if they got TC Carson to do some voices where his voice slowly changes. And if they played “rage of Sparta” the entire time. I would have killed to see this against heimdall
This implies, though, that Athena knew Kratos would have a child with Fae well after creating the tear and mask. As, we can assume, the mask and tear have been around for a long long time.
One interesting point is the fact that Athena ascended to a higher plane from dying as a self-less act.... ...Because when you think about it; there's another god that does the same thing at the end of ragnarok.
It would be really awesome if they did a story where Odin fights kratos again but realised he’s been fooled and manipulated by Athena, and makes a truce or blood oath to kratos, and destroy Athena but kratos dies in the end. Odin makes a statue for kratos in the end of his life
So how come Thor didn’t go to said plane of existence? He did die after refusing to be a monster upon realizing he should be a better dad. Is that not a selfless act? or is it because he didn’t die directly protecting someone that he didn’t.
Oooor, it’s atreus’s mask all along. The reason why it reacted to garm was because he rode fenrir to explore all realms and realities. Loki wore the mask to hide(or protect) himself from other gods of other pantheon while he traveled through space and time. He might have needed the mask to prevent a paradox from happening so he could manipulate things in the background even if a version of him is in that same place in time. Perhaps the reason why odin lost his eye is because his other self cancelled each other out because both versions tried to look into the tear at the same time, this their eyes exploded because of the causality paradox
Not to mention atreus’ ability to souls to inamate objects. He might have infused the true soul of garm into the mask, thus it’s reaction and the mask’s spatial abilities. This made garm souless which paradoxically allowed fenrir to take garms body

A fight where kratos or Atreus fight young kratos and young kratos just wipes the floor with either one. Then at the end it shows that them working together and their choices are the only things that matter.
Ares and Zeus is the main drive for Kratos in his need for vengeance but now Athena already dead but beyond comprehension to influence other Papillons to turn against him
I always knew athena had major to do in this... Even the ending has something to do with her... She knows kratos seeks redemption... Yet again... Kratos is still a pawn in a big play
I hope she finds Atreus and takes him to Greece. Imagine, she could portray herself as this glorious god, she can show him a false truth without even trying. Kratos has done so much horrific things, if Atreus would see any of it with his own eyes it might cause some conflict within him. And just like the Greek pantheon, fear can destroy anyone, who knows what she has planned though, there's alot of interesting ways to go about it.
I'm far from a GoW scholar, but some of this doesn't make sense. Here are my thoughts: 1. Garm and the mask: I don't think the mask was pointing to Garm. It was pointing to the area BEHIND Garm. Nothing was there that we know of, but it continued to react after Garm left, if only for a little. It was pointing to the foggy pit behind Garm's prison, an area similar to where other pieces of the mask were. Maybe that will be explored in a future game/DLC, but there could be something that that isn't attracted to the mask, but connected to it. Maybe another realm tear that the giants escaped through? 2. I dont think Garm is the cause of the Rift. That Rift has been there ever since Odin killed Ymir, so it likely predates Garm. 3. I don't think that Athena is connected to the gift of Prophecy, that's more Apollo's thing. Yes, her Ascension might have improved her wisdom and planning to the point where, like the Norns, she can accurately predict the future and people's fates, but there's no guarantee that's the case. 4. As others have pointed out, if the entire Norse Arc(?) is Athena's plan to kill the other pantheons, then it makes no sense. Kratos meeting Faye and Atreus has significantly calmed Kratos down. He's no longer the God of War that would slaughter an entire pantheon out of rage, in fact most (If not all) of the Norse Gods were killed in self defense, or because they were undeniably evil. I don't think the death of Atreus would even revert him back to his Greek days, he's learned how to control himself and strive to "Be Better." Going back to those ways would erase all his character growth. Also he didn't even kill ALL the gods, it's really just a handful of them. The Vanir and Aesir are still around, and Ragnarok is over, so it's unlikely they'll die any time soon. Besides that, Ragnarok just felt like the end of Kratos' story. Future games might have him involved, but it feels to me like the series will start following Atreus, as he grows and searches the other lands for the Giants. 5. I think you're half right about the mask. It doesn't react to Atreus because he's Greek and Giant, but because he's Green and NORSE. If the Mask is connected to a higher plane that connects all the pantheons, then the key to it might require someone with mixed blood to use it. No one else could use it because even if they were from a different land, they were still a pureblood. That could also explain Atreus' translation abilities. I don't believe it's explicitly stated to be a Jotun power, so it might be a perk of having mixed blood, and the mask has symbols Greece, Egypt, Japan, and likely other areas, supporting that it's a key to an area that CONNECTS those areas. It would make sense for it to be used by someone already connecting them
Nice theory but you're missing one small detail. Athen ascended to this higher plane of existence after her death so who's to say that Odin didn't ascend too after his death? Zeus ascended too, he appeared as a green spirit like Athena after his death to continue his fight with Kratos, until Kratos sucked his soul into the Blades of Hephestus. Then again, Atreus also trapped Odin's soul into a stone sphere, which has destroyed by Sindri, so he couldn't have ascended.
I know this video is kinda old, but if you look at the design of the mask there is different languages on the mask. There's japanese also written on the mask.
A fun theory, but you've forgotten one small but VERY important detail about the Mask. It has been in Odin's possession for 'many life times'. Which means that unless Kratos is FAR older than he seems, Athena COULDN'T have made it.
Zeus said that Kratos would never be ruler of Olympus. In part 2 There’s a painting of Athena , but a mystery of who the next ruler will be. Now in ragnorock there is a mural that shows a golden kratos be revered by people & Gods.
Interesting fact is that the gow norse giants are connected to the world on a fundamental level. Frost giants have there connections to ice/water/wind, fire giants have there fire/ earth and metal. But every giant had a spiritual connection to nature and the world. They were primordial beings so it came with the turf. But with that being said I could also see Athena fearing the giants for that same reason.
You already know Atreus is going to get captured by the Egyptian pantheon when he’s there to find more giants and Kratos will fight them, after which he will find the other god of war of Egypt. Kratos, tyr, and Egyptian god of war are going to wonder and be the three wise men as we have seen Kratos and tyr to be wise at this point.
I had a theory that on his new journey looking for the Giants, Atreus would end up finding the Giants blending in with a different religion/mythology, who were being manipulated by Athena. Telling them that Kratos is on a worldwide rampage, killing all gods, pantheons, religions in an effort to rule everything. Pitting the Giants, and by extension, Atreus against Kratos. It would keep Kratos and Atreus, as well as introduce a new Pantheon. One that is coming after Kratos, rather than Kratos going after them like every other GoW game.
Bro this won’t make sense. Atreus knew who Kratos was before and knows he has changed. If anything he’ll try to get Kratos to team up with him to convince them to stand down and turn against Athena.
I agree that the mask most certainly needs an explanation but I feel like Athena playing cruel games from a higher plane off existence seems so insignificant in comparison to her previous goals to have Kratos kill Zeus to be the sole God and use Hope to create a world in her image. With what we know now about the higher plane off existence, time and space are irrelevant to Athena but she now has access to knowledge previously unknown meaning she now knows of other realms (or pantheons). She could now point Kratos, her greatest weapon, at all the other Gods but this time with the power of time,space AND knowledge. She uses time and knowledge to instill prophecy on the Norse realm and driving Odin mad to essentially kill or subjugate most of their gods. After that, Kratos just cleans up, unknowingly inn the service of Athena. To add to it, the Giants are tied to that higher plane. Some could tap into it, like Groa, for prophecy. Unbeknownst to them, it was only knowledge Athena would allow. This knowledge includes how to create the mask. I think Athena gave them the knowledge to create a mask that could interact with the tear (and ultimately the higher plane of existence) but also orchestrated a prophecy to lead Atreus to there mask because he can extract and transfer Souls. I think she was trying to get Atreus to pull her out of the tear. I think the next installment will find Atreus being manipulated by Athena through Angrboda. I think it will be time travel. I think he'll "learn" that he can save Brok's soul by using the mask on the tear but he'll need to retrieve the mask before his past self throws it away so it'll be right at the the events of Ragnaroks end game where Odin's body lies soulless. He'll somehow be tricked into transferring Athena's soul into Odin's shell thereby creating the next new antagonist. You'll find out that Groa's original prophecy is coming true. That Atreus needs to find and assemble the giant army against Athena-Odin and Kratos does finally die. Atreus will have caused all of this because he refused to let Brok stay dead.
