I had both the grow light and the black light versions of these when I was a kid. The grow light I used daily until it finally wore out and then I used a razor blade to extract the tube and replaced it with a new one. I still have the bookshelf with the plastic mounting clips for the Bright Stik to this day although the light is long gone, I don't recall what happened to it. The black light sadly got kicked down the stairs by my little brother when he was about 3 and the tube broke. The ballast is indeed just a resistor embedded in the backing strip, it's reliable but very inefficient however it was still better than incandescent in that respect.

I have one of these, but it is the blacklight version. It belonged to my mom when I was little, and then she gave it to me this year when she found it in storage.

Ours mounted over the washer and dryer just died. Must have been at least 26 years old since we didn't install it and never replaced it.

I wish I could still find these. One of mine broke. I just spent 15min on Amazon, Google, & eBay.

I really wish these had a serviceable bulb.

this bright stick is awesome, have you ever tried to refurbish an EOL one? i mean replacing the tube with a new one?

I did that when I was about 12. I replaced the burned out grow light tube with a regular fluorescent tube by using a razor knife to cut the silicone gluing in the tube. It worked fine although it was tricky to do.

I have the black light version of this....the Brite Stiks are cool as they don't hum or buzz due to the resistive ballast, though you can hear the plastic contracting and cooling down as the resistance wire cools after they're turned off after running a while. Some people have replaced the lamp in these, though they don't make it easy.

Thanks for this video! im trying to revive my grandma's Bright Stik. I've got the same goldenrod end caps and groovy font. Mine's a "Gro and Sho", made in Canada not Mexico (??)

back in the day I seem to remember those in stores and the box said 33 watts
@averageslytherinperson6154
@averageslytherinperson6154 4 года назад
not 33 but 20 watts. however the ballast is rated 33 watts
@James1095
@James1095 Год назад
@@averageslytherinperson6154 The entire unit is rated for 33 watts. It's a 20W tube with an integrated resistive ballast that burns up another 13 watts, since they're integral the rating is the total consumption of the unit.

What is the wattage
@luiscoelho4151

I think is a Electronic Starter but not sure :/ :)
@James1095

It isn't. It's a standard glowbottle starter, just a bare glass tube. I took mine apart many years ago to replace the tube.
