THE ORIGINAL FOOTAGE FILMED IN HI8 AT COTTESMORE IN 2001 OF THE "BLOWN BY THE BONE " INCIDENT ...... THE REST IS HISTORY :) THIS VIDEO IS UNDER COPYRIGHT TO JETNOISEFOREVER.
Seeing the video still makes my skin tickle... Back in the day we went there as a group of enthusiats from a small "Flugplatzmuseum" in east-germany. Driving through UK from museum to museum and finally arriving at Cottesmoore. The day was nice and sunny and the local farmer opened up the field for everyone. So we stand there filming and photographing everything - in t-shirts and shorts. Being so close to the howling Starfighters, the MiG-21s and all the others was epic for me as a teen. And then the B1 staged. When you look closely, you see that one of the afterburnes comes on much later than the others. All of our pictures and even the video just show 3/4 lit. At that point we all needed to turn around. It was not just the heat, it felt like every little sandcorn was penetrating through our skin. What the video does not show you: "imediatly" after the takeoff ppl arrived in cars and a helicopter hovered above us and checked if someone was injured. But i just remember some cameragear getting droped, while ppl tried to run away. Sure it was completely stupid to stand there, but on the other hand, what an awesome story it still is. Thanks for reminding me :-) Greetings from Germany Simmie
"When you look closely, you see that one of the afterburnes comes on much later than the others." Yeah, it took 25 seconds for the last afterburner to light; not sure what was going on there. Fortunately, with the B-1's engines being so close to each other and to the centerline, and with the engine that didn't get full power right away being an inboard engine, asymmetric thrust wasn't an issue.
I was 14 at the time, and was stood right behind the B-1. I believe that man walking into shot with his arm up is my dad looking for me. The heat was INSANE but as a 14 year old it was damn fun! The B-1 is an awesome bird.
Awesome! I've never seen one roll like that before. This has to be the best B1 clip I've seen. I really hope one comes to do some shows in the UK this summer.
My family was stationed at RAF Cottesmore when this happened. We lived on camp behind the wire so we get free tickets for our family and all our friends for all of riat and could go anywhere behind the scenes too. As did the rest of the camp personnel. Was allowed up on the flight-line with my dad, who was on duty, on arrivals day :) i remember next airshow that was held at RAF Cottesmore the RAF Police were stopping people using this field because of this :P
Incredible display and video. Have heard about this Incident but not seen the full footage. Some of the Spotter's behind the Bone were roasted after their take-off, lol. xD
I worked at the airport that hosted the Ft Lauderdale Airshow years ago. Since we knew the ATC crew, we requested a swept wing flyby from the Bone... and the pilot came over comms and said sure thing. We were near the approach end of the runway (off to the side) and she did a low fly by... one of the best moments of my life
I was there that day in the group towards the right hand side up to that point it had been mainly fighters that moved quite far up the runway before starting take off run the b1 turned on the piano keys and lit em up blew people sat on fence and all their belongings half way down the field unforgettable
I was in the friends enclosure for this and we saw the shenagins in the distance, without doubt one of the funniest things i have seen. One or two friends members had gone down there and were given a stern talking to by the friends staff when they returned with battle scars. As for that B1 display it was one of the best I have seen, though in the late 80s early 90s at RIAT and Air Fete they displayed the Bone much more vigorously regulaly.
I was one of the idiots here too. What was bizarre was the lack of noise inside the wake of the burners. Just very hot and then, of course, extremely breezy. Still, hope the farmer enjoyed his takings that day. Don't think RIAT were too impressed.
That would be me. Its worth explaining that the owner of the field had opened it up for a very cheap entrance fee, and up until this happened it was an AMAZING spot to stand, with planes landing 10/15 feet above ours heads. I've never stood in such a great spot.
Oh man! Saw a Bone rip up the tarmac in the 90's @ Barnes Field in Mass. USA. We were standing near it but NOT BEHIND IT! Don't think you could do that here in the US.
Remember seeing this as it happened, said to my mates someones going to regret standing there, been hit with jetwash in the past, otherwise I would have probably been up there to. But still a magnificent display by the B1, hints of the Vulcan prototype at Farnborough barrel roll. Those were the days, to much H&S these days, remember the late great Ray Hanna parting the daisies at many an airshow.
I saw a Bone perform at the Dayton Airshow in the mid-90s. It's the second-loudest thing I've ever heard in my life. Only Concorde at full burner was louder. (I used to work near Dulles Airport and got to watch them come and go a few days a week.) And yeah, those guys were morons for standing back there.
Given that the B-1 puts out over 120,000 pounds of thrust, EVEN BEFORE AFTERBURNERS ARE LIT, I have to laugh at people blithely standing a short distance BEHIND a B1 during takeoff.
@Andrew M Agreed the B1-Bs General Electric F-101-102 turbofans produce 17,390 pounds thrust at military power(full throttle no afterburner) or just under 80,000pounds combined, dry. In full afterburner those same engines make 120,000 pounds of thrust.
Shouldn't the Pilots have aborted the takeoff or radioed to the authorties to warn those poor people standing within the blast radius? Someone could have been hurt - just saying ....
