Godzilla (Gojira)is a 1954 Japanese epic kaiju film directed and co-written by Ishirō Honda, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. Produced and distributed by Toho Co., Ltd., it is the first film in the Godzilla franchise. The film stars Akira Takarada, Momoko Kōchi, Akihiko Hirata, and Takashi Shimura, with Haruo Nakajima and Katsumi Tezuka as Godzilla. In the film, Japan's authorities deal with the sudden appearance of a giant monster, whose attacks trigger fears of nuclear holocaust in post-war Japan.
After 70 years Godzilla is still talked about and loved. For it's time and what it achieved, it will forever be the g

The original film is truly a piece of art. Thought-provoking, haunting and evocative. I watch it every 3rd of November and it always gets better for me. Honesty one of my favourite films of all time.

I do believe the 1954 film is the best Godzilla film. But goddamn is Minus One fucking phenomenal as well.

I have not seen the original (even though I'm actually older than the movie itself!) but I have seen Minus One, and I never expected such a deep story. It's a period that I'm very curious about, and this is about the only movie that seems to depict the "monster" that Japan was having to deal with. It's an amazing allegory.

Lovers of stop motion (me included) have often overlooked the amazing beauty and craft of suit acting and models. Its always worth remembering they had one shot or had to rebuild the whole set which were often incredibly fragile in order to crumble properly

With the amount of Godzilla films that there was, it seems tedious all the miniatures they had to build each time.

There are noticeably fewer city destruction scenes in later films of the Showa. ONe of the reasons why the 90s Gamera films are so terrific

I'll never forget when I first saw Gojira 1954. I had been watching Godzilla since I was 3, Destroy All Monsters, Mothra vs Godzilla, all fun! But then when I was 10, I watched Gojira; needless to say I'm 26 now, and I still tear up watching to horror of nuclear war that Honda, Tanaka, Tsubaraya, Sekizawa and all the others were trying to convey. But recently with Minus One and Oppenheimer, it makes me wonder: Did Oppenheimer and any of his colleagues ever watch Godzilla, or any radioactive monster movie for that matter, and if not, why, and if so, what did they think?

Excelent review as always. One thing I always wondered is in the US version of the film, it seems like Raymond Burr is doing an Orson Wells impression. Maybe it was an actors choice, or it just came out that way and I'm reading too much into it.

4:40 Actually, it was exactly 8 months and 2 days after The Lucly Dragon No. 5 was hit. Not “slightly over a month.” The Lucky Dragon No. 5 was hit in the early hours of the morning on March 1st, 1954 while the first Godzilla films official release date in Japan was November 3rd, 1954.

I'd heard it said before that people don't want the original Gojira anymore when criticizing modern Godzilla films for being action over substance. I think the success and universal praise of Minus One has soundly proven that wrong Sure people laugh at the effects work of Gojira from a modern lense, but the effects work of the film isn't the point. It's the effect the film has on the viewer that is. And that is why the original Godzilla has stood the test of time Godzilla doesn't just reference the destruction and devastation inflicted on Japan and it's people by the bombs. It takes you to that time and shows you it front and center Something similar was tried in the movie Cloverfield which drew heavily on the tragedy of 9/11. However that film utterly fails due to one critical factor Cloverfield sought to entertain it's audiences. Gojira meant to horrify them

I cannot imagine survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and anyone from the fishing boat who saw the Castle Bravo test watching the original 1954 Gojira in the theater. I tried recommending Godzilla Minus One to someone and they said they weren't interested. Probably because of the long period of goofy Godzilla movies made for kids.

Gojira 1954 is very frightening. When I was a kid I was scared of the monster itself. But now as an adult I am afraid of the very real elements that could, in this story create that monster. Except that outside of the story they are all too real and prevalent in our world and we live with that "monster" every day. One small side note that is often overlooked, is that in Godzilla's original and current design, his skin is not that of a dinosaur or the scales of a reptile. His skin is burnt, chaffed and mottled like the victims of the blasts and radiation from the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (you can see by some of the real photos you showed) and this was a very intentional decision by the creators of Godzilla. To me it has always made him much scarier and oddly realistic than say a giant spider or ape.

This was the first non-English language film that I ever watched. I was 8 at the time. For the longest time, my foreign film experience was just Godzilla, Gamera, and an occasional Ghibli film. Over the past five or six months, however, most of the movies I've watched have been non-English. I owe my passion for film largely to Godzilla. It's my go-to recommendation for people who are looking to get into world cinema.

I was raised on Godzilla, so I always had this love for Japan and its cinema ingrained in me. But now that I think about it, Godzilla represents a ronin. A warrior without a home or master, born out of war.

@bushidoblues9302
@bushidoblues9302 8 месяцев назад
@nemosidebiz Sanjuro is a great representation of Godzilla. In Yojimbo, he's on noones side, and he causes a great calamity to that town, but he represents the needed balance, and Godzilla is that same balance. Godzilla only comes because of a new weapon that's capable of mass destruction. Godzilla also comes when other Kaiju monsters threaten. So, in a way, Godzilla is like Sanjuro and both of them fight for balance.

Godzilla is a monster born from a hydrogen bomb test. Hydrogen bomb tests were not used to defeat Godzilla. Godzilla is a symbol of anti-nuclear and anti-war sentiments, and is a disaster-level monster that spreads senseless violence. I like the Monsterverse, but let me just say this. From Japan.
