John Travolta actually got his start in the TV sitcom 'Welcome Back Kotter'. Olivia Newton-John was a singer first and foremost. She won 4 Grammy Awards.
@@kennethsonia5350 The boy in the Plastic Bubble was a made for TV movie that came out a year after Welcome Back Kotter started airing. Travolta had a very busy run at the end of the 70's, 75 - debuted on Welcome Back Kotter, 76 - The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, his first serious role and first movie role, 77 - Saturday Night Fever, 78 - Grease.
Came as a five year old and did her schooling, musical training, and early performances here before seeking a bigger audience in the US. Much loved here and played a big part in setting up a very advanced cancer hospital in Melbourne.
Olivia Newton-John has sold more than 100 million album, won 4 Grammys and 9 AMA, 5 CMA and other awards, died on the 8th of August 2022, how could you not know her? You need to check her out.
Olivia Newton-John was Travolta's co-star in Grease. She is most known for her singing career. Unfortunately, she died a couple of years ago from cancer.
Those black pants ONJ had on from wardrobe were genuine 1950's pants and they had to sew ONJ up in them because the zip was busted every day. She laughed and said "You can imagine I didn't eat and drink much on those days of filming". She retained the pants and decades later when she built her Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia she auctioned them off to help with the fonds and a billionaire bought them for $160,000 and eventually gave them back as a present to ONJ, which was nice of him.
Olivia Newton-John was 29 years old when she played this role! Her music career was well established before the film. And I think she was one of the most beautiful women ever, all the way until she passed.💔RIP Ms. Olivia
Travolta had sn amazing 1978. Saturday night fever and grease in the same year and the soundtracks dominated the charts for the whole year . Same producers .
Travolta got his start playing a sitcom called Welcome back, Kotter. In the beginning of that show, he was just one of the sweathogs, but like Fonzi on Happy Days, his popularity grew. Then he started in Saturday Night Fever, and he took off.
In 1985 John attended a formal dinner at the White House, held in honor of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Nancy Reagan told John that Diana’s fantasy was to dance with him so, at the First Lady’s prompting, he invited Diana to join him on the dance floor. He was wearing a tuxedo and she had on a stunning dress. There doesn’t seem to be an actual video of them dancing but there are some iconic pictures of the event.
My husband and I's first date was to go to the movie to Saturday Night Live. We are celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary this summer! Here's a toast to riding around on Spring evenings in my black Trans Am, with a gold screaming chicken, t-tops off and music blaring. Life was sweet!
John Travolta wanted to be a dancer..he actually had a condition that he have at least one dance scene in all of his movies back then...which is why you notice that in a lot of his older movies.
Growing up in the mid 1970s, one of many great T.V. sitcoms on the air was, "Welcome Back Kotter" starring Gabe Kaplan. This is where John Travolta got his start to stardom at the age of 21 playing the role of Vinnie Barbarino, the high school class cut up . His character was known for saying to his classmates as a put down, "Up your nose with a rubber hose!". Shortly after, he would go on to star in "Saturday Night Fever" and "Grease".. Olivia Newton-John would become a music superstar in her own right with many hits in the U.S.
ONJ was, primarily, a huge pop star in the 70's and 80's. She did a little acting. She has a large and very popular catalog that y'all might want to dive into. Let's Get Physical was a bit of a cultural phenomenon in the 80's.
@@theodoreritola7641 Sorry, I am not sure what you point is. She was already internationally known for singing long before Grease. Probably why she got the role of Sandy. Grease definitely was huge for her career. The Physical video in the 80's launched workout fashion trends very popular in the decade and some lasting to this day. Also the Physical video and Jane Fonds workouts launched the popularity of aerobic excercise in the 80's and much of that lasts until today in some form. My main point to the reactors is she is huge and her music might be of interest to them since reacting to music is what they do.
That 'Grease" poster with Olivia and John is a blueprint of a whole era.Olivia was also a fabulous live performer. She was flawless in her live performances (without autotune-of course) being impactful and kicked a@@! Many of todays self centered autotuned singers should look back and learn from such talents that could really sing without being ''wired".Respect.
RIP Olivia Newton John. She was a great singer. John Travolta and I are about the same age and I have watched him progress from the TV series Welcome Back Kotter to where he is today.
The T-Birds were supposed to be greasers. Before John Travolta was in the iconic movies "Grease" and "Saturday Night Fever", he had already become a star in the hit TV sit com, "Welcome Back Kotter". Olivia Newton John was also a star in her own right... she was already a very famous, Australian pop singer. A side note to that last scene in the movie... While Sandy tried to become more like one of the "Pink ladies", in secret, and as a surprise for Sandy, Danny Zuko had taken up a sport to impress her. At the end of their Senior year in high school, Danny had earned his "Letterman" sweater to give to Sandy. Both Sandy and Danny loved each other so much, they had each tried tried to change a little, to make the other one happy.
Both John and Olivia had great chemistry together in the movie. Though they tried to recreate the magic with other films, and those didnt get the praise of Grease, they remained great friends until her passing. If you want to see more of earlier Travolta, watch both Saturday Night Fever and Welcome Back Kotter. He just turned 70 recently. Fun fact: they were not the original choices for the lead roles. Henry Winkler aka The Fonz from happy days and Marie Ormond were the original choices, but they turned those roles down because they didn't want to be typecast.
My favorite memory of this movie/song was back when it first came out in the 1970's. I was in the US Navy and my ship made a port visit to Athens, Greece. While I was out on liberty I stumbled across a movie theater that played American first run movies, Grease was playing. Given it was a musical, it was subtitled, so I was able to enjoy it. The shock I got was when the movie got to this scene/song. The entire audience sang with Olivia and John, in Greek accented English of course. It was the ONLY song the audience jumped in on. What a treat to experience that. Olivia was touring a few years back, before her death, and John came onstage and sang this song with her. They both still sounded great.
I started college in the fall of 1978. The soundtrack for Grease is all I heard coming out of dorm rooms. Whenever I hear of song from Grease, I am back as a freshman at college at the girl's dorm.
Her acting in that specific final 'Grease" scene is amazing.Perfect.So is her singing performance.Just take a closer look at her facial expressions and her body movements. So seductive.
Olivia was/is an angel with an angelic voice, she is missed. But good job again guys, I love this movie and your reaction to this classic musical with it's great sound track.
This movie was released just after my high school graduation in 1978. I saw it in the theater because OLIVIA was in it. She was my crush from my freshman year all the way through until she passed away in August 2022. Her voice is incredible. Her first American hits were in the country music genre in 1973. Her first #1 came in 1974 with "I Honestly Love You". From that point on, she held a very special place in my heart. Truth be told, it was likewise for many guys back then. We all had Farrah Fawcett's poster on our walls; Stevie Nicks haunting certain kinds of dreams of teen year. But, Olivia was the one everybody wanted for a girlfriend. Grease was a watershed moment for her career too. Just like her character, her music changed right after that movie. Her songs became pop rock and had edgier subjects. "Physical" being a prime example. She had multiple hit albums and song for years after. The farewell scene is Grease became bittersweet when she passed. Any of her songs would be worth your reactions. Oh, and one of her songs, "Xanadu" is from a movie in which her co-star was Gene Kelly.
I saw this in 1978 at the movies when I was 10 and it was awesome. My favorite song in it is the Grease theme song performed by Frankie Valli and written by Barry Gibb. In fact The Bee Gees often performed it in concert since Barry wrote it.
The nostalgia is all mine. This was a huge hit when I was in high school in the 70s. The soundtrack was all over the radio, John and Olivia were superstars and there was a big 50s thing going on in high school at the time because of this and the TV show Happy Days;
Vinnie Barboreno and the Warthogs!!! I LOVED WELCOME BACK KOTTER! Grease was the first movie I ever saw in theaters and I was 4 years old in '78. My Uncle Jeff took me to see it. I was already singing a lot, but Olivia Newton- John was my hero. Not only was she in my first movie but she was the first person I ever saw in concert. I was in music classes and eventually vocal ensemble and A Cappella groups because of her. She was in 3 movies, well unless you count the last Sharknado movie. Two with John, Grease and Two of a Kind, and Xanadu. Grease is the only one most remember though. She was a huge music artist though who sang country and pop and had #1's on both. I cried when she passed. She and Prince were huge musical influences on me.
Olivia Newton John is Australian and known primarily as a great singer who sometimes acted. She had a great voice. Sadly, she just passed a year or so ago. RIP
Great Memories for me. First Love., we bought the 8track tape and sang, sang, sang. Most specifically, “You’re the One That I Want” together. I can’t hear this song and not think of him. He still reaches out to me every now and then. Fond memories, but wish it would’ve worked out between us. He still has big piece of my heart ❤️
This song actually played A LOT on the radio after the movie came out. Also, the movie song tracks were published and sold in many stores. While John Travolta had started off in tv, this was his first big movie. Olivia Newton-John was primarily a singer, but did star in a couple of other movies. Xanadu comes to mind. And there's a soundtrack from that as well. Fred Astaire co-starred in that one.
I remember when John travolta got his start on the tv sitcom welcome back kotter, and this movie brings it all back i remember when this first came on i think i watched it over and over, i still remember all the words and songs in this movie.. oliva newton john and him were so great in this movie...rip oliva newton john you will be missed
John trained in song, dance and acting and he did pretty good in all aspects. Olivia Newton John's fame was as a singer. They were a good match-up. Haha, listening to a TV ad playing the chorus from this song right now. It's for a flea collar, where a kid picks out a shelter dog to adopt. Never noticed it before.
OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN - " MAGIC " studio version 1980 // and " Hopelessly Devoted To You ' from the movie GREASE 1978 and " SUDDENLY " a Duet with Cliff Richards. Released in 1980 ,,,, these are 3 more incredible songs by the beautiful Olivia who starred in 2 amazing movies and created some of the very best music of the 70s & 80s
My favourite film when I was young and I remember the long ques around the block. Very popular movie in 1978! Amazing movie and soundtrack which I still love today!
Olivia Newton-John was one of Australia’s greatest female voices…..Olivia was also in Xanadu…..and she had a lengthy solo career from the 60’s until the 2010’s…. Her and John Travolta were dear friends right up until her passing.
This film came out in the 70s and in the UK you had to be 15 to watch it or accompanied by an adult. My daughter was 14 and annoyed I wouldn't let her see this film with friends of the same age - so begrudgingly I took her . . . and LOVED the film! At the time it was iconic.
The thing is, most of the cast of GREASE were in their 20s and 30s trying to play high school students. Of course as a kid, I really didn't pay attention to it, but I did think that they did look older. But years later, I do like the movie and feel nostalgic watching you two react to the song! Thanks!
Travolta played teen heartthrob, Vinnie Barbarino, in the mid 70's TV show Welcome Back Kotter. His 1st movie hit was in Steven King's and Brian DePalma's horror classic "Carrie" in 1976. 1977's Saturday Night Fever shot him to fame with his white suit, disco dancing and his iconic movie opening, "Strut" to the Bee Gees, Disco Anthem, "Staying Alive". Disco was so fun. Olivia Newton John was the "Australian Neutron Bomb". She was most famous for her singing and music videos. You should react to her "Let's Get Physical", one of MTV's most popular vids ever. She dated singer, Andy Gibb, the Bee Gee's younger brother before he died young from cocaine use. Sadly, Andy was poised to join his brothers group when he succumbed to his demons.
They used to play this song on top 40 radio back then, so you might have heard it there. They also did a live performance of Grease on broadcast TV around the holidays just a few years ago and this song was part of it, so you could have seen it there.
We Go Together is the finale song before it loops back into the Grease theme in the credits. I saw GREASE five times in the movie theater and many times on tv/video. In the clip where she plays a cheerleader, the woman with the dark hair who looks 30 who plays a high school student Rizzo(Stockard Channing) of Broadway, TV, and Film is a Harvard graduate. The woman in yellow Pink Lady Marty at the carnival in Dinah Manoff from Child's Play movie and her mom is Oscar winner Lee Grant. Early Travolta is also Urban Cowboy. Sadly the actor who played Kenikie(Jeff Conway, Taxi tv series) while dancing during Greased Lightening, injured himself and later became addicted to painkillers. Great reaction!
Oh man I am back in the movie theater in 1978 as 11 old watching this movie we stayed for two showings we hid in the bathroom and went back in and watched it again ahhh good times and great memories of my childhood.
I was 14 when 'Grease' the Movie came out, only shortly after, 'Saturday Night Fever', I think there may have been a year between them. So everyone knew who John Travolta was even here in the UK. Olivia Newton John was a very well known Australian singer, here in the UK. Not sure how well she was known in the US. We all laughed at all these 25 and 30 year olds playing school kids. But I don't think we understood that in America 'School' meant any education. School ended in the UK at 16. Then it was Further Education & College or University which you attended as Students not pupils. Adults not Children. Graduation only happens here at Colleges or University for professional qualifications or Degrees at the lowest.
LOVE this film. Was sooo in love with John Travolta at the time. RIP dear Olivia. One of the most gorgeous women inside & out, to have graced the earth 😢😢💔💔
Urban Cowboy was the last movie John danced in, except for the scene in Pulp Fiction. UC helped put country music on the map. It has a great soundtrack.
... now you need to listen to the title song "Grease" which was played during the opening and closing credits of the movie. The song was sung by Frankie Valli, and written by Barry Gibb (of the Bee Gees).
Olivia was a very popular country singer in the 70's, one of my favorite female vocalist. I fell in love with John Travolta when I was in high school, first saw him in "Welcome Back Kotter", I told my girlfriend's he was going to be BIG and I was right. Love them both and this is a great musical. The T-Birds aren't joques, they're the rebellious troublemakers.
This was the point in Olivia Newton-John's career where she went from girl-next-door wholesomeness to sexy tigress. Her music completely changed after this movie. She had a wonderful career in both styles. RIP Olivia!
CAPTAIN & TENNILLE - ' HOW CAN YOU BE SO COLD ' 1979 Studio Version, Up Tempo Groove, super creative in the Instrumentation production and very well made song that youguys got to hear , plus Tennille's vocals are phenomenal 🎸
