I always felt like Synchro Summoning was a re-invention of Ritual Summoning where the ritual spell gets baked into one of the monsters, the tuners; it still requires adding up levels but they must be exact now to what you are trying to summon; and instead of having to have the Summoned monster in your hand to do a Ritual Summon, they made it always available in the Extra Deck. Turning what was a 3-4 card commitment into an often 2 card combo of having a tuner and a non-tuner on the field.

I think the best part about Synchro monsters is that, for it's dedicated lifespan, Synchro summoning felt like a really unique aspect of Yugioh that was simultaneously cool, but also not so easy to summon that it loses its charm. I feel like early Zexal really pushed the Xyz mechanic, and that mechanic felt extremely forced and made pulling off an Xyz summon not as fun. I feel like Pendulum (at the early stages) was a lot better in this regard, but that mechanic was fundamentally broken and helped speed the game up to the turn 1 centric game we have now.

The terms "advance summon" and "release" are used in the OCG. They were not used in the TCG and have not been reverted in the OCG.

0:55 Imagine if it wasn't "Extra", and they made you have a 15-card deck for each, with a "Synchro Deck", "Xyz Deck", etc, or required you to be limited to just ONE "Extra" deck like that and no more (i.e. Synchro only)

WIth how instantaneously YGO players can make the extra deck broken with just those 15 cards you want to give them MORE tools? Most games these days don't go past the 3rd turn anyway, what's the point?
