PRS's first go at the S-style guitar. Was this early foray into F-style guitars the "original" Silver Sky? How does it sound? Why didn't it take off? What do we love? What's curious about it? This fab playing piece of gear vexes us like Maximus vexed Commodus in "Gladiator." We are very vexed. It vexes us. We are vexed!

Beautiful guitar, good choice hanging on to it. I'm only about 1.5 miles from Fralin's place in Richmond, and it always blows my mind just to drive past it :)

I've had three EGs with the Fralin "domino" pickups. The tones were outstanding, all the classic vintage Strat sounds were there plus P90 tones. My biggest problem, and the reason why I sold all three of them, is the EGs were HEAVY. All of mine were 8.5 to 9.5 lbs. If I found one in the mid 7 lb range I would still have it today.

I think you nailed it with your assessment of scale length. It changes a lot more of the feel and also affects pickup position as well.

That is a great looking and sounding guitar. Would play that over the Silver Sky any day of the week.

I bought a blue EG-4 in 1996 for $700 on consignment. Most comfortable guitar I've ever played. My brother "took" it and it disappeared. I've been trying unsuccessfully to find a guitar to match it ever since.

I’ve owned a 10 Top 3xFralin EG since 94. A few days ago I played a Silver Sky. After about 20 mins I decided not to go home with it. I just felt my EG was a better Strat for me. I went in intending to purchase a Silver Sky. We are used to different things……. I will say my Eg doesn’t sound like yours. Maybe it’s the thick maple cap and non humbucker…….

Had one in the early 90s, Whale Blue Burst with pearloid pickguard, the noiseless Lindy Frailin's were amazing. So many tones available with coil splitting. The only artist I ever saw playing these were Blue Oyster Cult back in the day. I traded it toward a Pearl White Custom 24 that I still have. I'm not complaining, just wish I still had the EG. They were great guitars, I think new it was 850.00 with case, a little more than a USA Strat at the time.

Is it crazy that i think i prefer the sound of the EG? pretty killer guitar man.

It really is a great sounding guitar, and I think the Fralin Zero-Noise/Twangmasters are a big part of it. I remember an interview where PRS thought they were too low output, but the sound and output is very much in line with traditional singles. If they were paired with a lower wind PAF pup, they would work pretty well. We modified the HFS with a modified split with a R-C circuit to ground and it’s pretty steady with that pulled.
