Betty Boop was created by Max Fleischer of Fleischer Studios, and made her debut in 1930’s Talkartoon cartoon short “Dizzy Dishes.” The cartoon originally starred the voice talent of Margie Hines, and Betty appeared as an anthropomorphic French poodle that was modeled after the likeness of singer Helen Kane. An immediate success due to Betty's saucy look, it was only in 1932’s cartoon “Any Rags” that she transformed into a human. Her floppy ears became hoop earrings, and her black canine snout transitioned into skin-colored button nose. A cartoon that loved to sing and dance, she became recognized for her large child-like head, love of music and cute catch phrase. Join www.WatchMojo.com as we explore the origins of Betty Boop.

Helen Kane bases her act and singing off of baby ester Per wiki "Helen Kane (August 4, 1904[1] - September 26, 1966) was an American popular singer; her signature song was "I Wanna Be Loved By You". Kane's voice and appearance were a likely source for Fleischer Studios animator Grim Natwick when creating Betty Boop, itself a style originating from Baby Esther, although It-girl Clara Bow is another possible influence."

They might have drawn Betty Boop white, but her history is black. The character was actually stolen from Cotton Club singer Esther Jones - known by her stage name “Baby Esther” and the baby talk she used when she sang songs like “I Wanna Be Loved By You (Boop- Boop-BeDoo). Her act later “inspired” cartoonist Max Fleischer to create the character Betty Boop and Esther tried to win the rights back to her character until the day she died.

@ JuleneSings - Nobody would know who Esther Jones is if it weren't for white people. Her entire profession comes from white people. The idea that a person could be a recording artist and/or a nightclub singer comes from white people. Audio recording equipment invented by white people, video recording, photographs, microphones, theaters, nightclubs, western style music scales, the musical instruments that is backing her created by white people, pianos etc., The flapper hairstyle she is wearing, the style of dress she is wearing, the shoes she is wearing, most of her appearance and profession comes from white people, speaking the English language, can go on and on. Who has 'stolen' more things from who? None of those things existed in Africa. She was privileged to live in a predominately white country especially America. Much better life than what she would've lived in Africa. Black people are privileged to live in white created nations where black people can use all the things white people created, like electricity, computers and the internet you are using right now. Let go of your hatred towards white people.

Helen Kane, a white woman, stole her style and dress from Esther Jones, or "Baby Esther", a black singer during the Harlem Renaissance who performed regularly at the Cotton Club. Kane saw her act in 1928 and stole her baby-like singing style for a recording of "I Wanna Be Loved By You", which launched Kane's career. She also stole Baby Esther's style of dress though she did not have the figure to really carry it off. Baby Esther had a banging figure, just like the cartoon character. The real origin of Betty Boop was Baby Esther.

***** So, wait... How is she wrong? Everything I've read and what you've typed here seem to correlate with what ***** has said. Yes, Betty was a caricature of Helen Kane, who tried to sue Max Fleischer and paramount for $250,000 for "exploiting her image". During the trial it was maintained by all testimony that Ms. Kane went to the Cotton Club, watched "Baby Esther" perform and weeks later was singing "Boop-a-Doop". While the "flapper" style was the norm in the '20s-'30s time period, a select few used the style of dress that Betty was known to emulate. It's also worth noting that the baby style of singing was used by even fewer, Little Ann Little, just to name one. After two years Fleischer found an old reel of Esther Jones performing and ruled “The plaintiff has failed to sustain either cause of action by proof of sufficient probative force.” meaning he didn't believe the sound originate with Kane. Had Kane not watched Jones perform, there would have been no inspiration for Kane to use the style, record "I Wanna be Loved by You", become famous, and Max Fleischer wouldn't have anyone to make a caricature of... all of which reads like what you said, and what OP said.... So I ask again, how is she wrong?

Men are attracted by young women that are able to breed. That's in our DNA. Men can visually tell the difference between a child who is unable to breed, a young fertile woman who is able to carry children and an old woman that cannot have babies anymore. That's the reason why (normal) men are not attracted to females that are very old or very young and instead they are attracted to females that are just about the right age to have kids. Remember, this is in our DNA, from hundreds of thousands of years ago, back when all the rules were not around. Since then, the rules of society changed but the rules of anatomy have not. A 17 year old female can be sexually mature and fully developed, able to have children, hence she will be perceived as "attractive" by adult males.
@capcadoi
@capcadoi 7 лет назад
I need to emphasize the word VISUALLY. Men can visually tell if a woman has all the characteristics of fertility. Men don't need to ask for an ID and figure out the age in order to know whether or not a woman is attractive.

Ester Jones actually wasn't the original Betty Boop. The "Boop oop a doop" was hers however. It was Helen Kane that attempted to sue the creators of Betty Boop for "copying her" catchphrase which she felt would have caused unfair competition. Ester's manager testified that Helen attended one of Ester's shows and started singing "Boop oop a doop" a few weeks after. [Ester was not able the attend the trial and passed away shortly after the trial had already ended.] Betty Boop is basically an imitation of an imitation. Yes there was an instance of a white person attempting to claim something a black person started, but she wasn't actually able to [legally] claim ownership of it ... Thankfully. There's a black and white picture that has been circulating of a woman who looks like a RL copy of Betty Boop claiming it is Ester Jones, but it is not. It's some model named Olya. I'm more concerned as to why that was even brought up. All your comment was saying was how you looked Betty Boop and Popeye.

@honey_bee65 8 лет назад
Betty Boop was *NOT* based on *"Baby" Esther Jones*, she was based on *HELEN KANE*. Helen Kane is the one that stole her act. So, in a way, she WAS based on Baby Esther, but INDIRECTLY. But it was Helen Kane's persona that Max Fleischer was intentionally trying to mimic. Kane tried suing him for ripping off her identity, but since SHE ripped off Baby Esther, she lost.

The reference woman for the character was called Esther Jones, an African-American jazz singer who lived in Harlem, NY. Also known as "Baby Esther" she was never recognized by the media, and lived in the shadow of this whitening throughout her career. Baby Esther performed in unremarkable cabarets in Harlem, with her unmistakable voice and sounds like “boop-boop-a-doops” constantly imitated by the character Betty Boop who had the same timbre as “baby” and carried the same aesthetic. Initially the character was inserted as a black woman, as in the animation already shown in an episode of Popeye, but then she was transformed into a white woman before being finally taken off the air. It is estimated that it raised millions of dollars in TV and products. In 1932, artist Helen Kane wanted to claim recognition with Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer, claiming that he had inspired all of her appearance and personality in her but was soon cut off because Baby Esther's manager proved that Helen had copied her artist when he saw her performing in 1928 at the Everglades Club and collected several references adapting for her performance of "Poop Poop Padoop" in the musical Good Boy and in the song "I Wanna Be Loved by You", which made the white woman famous overnight . Betty Boop still represents a lot, especially an era filled with racist and sexist stereotypes that lurked and still surround the entertainment industry today. But I can already say that the woman behind it was never rewarded and died young. Baby Esther was limited to being known only in her area while making money from her timbre, aesthetics and essence, having her role stolen by a white Broadway artist, who on top wanted merits for a character created based on Esther. Same shit that still happens to countless black artists who have their spotlight stolen and don't get the opportunities they really deserve.
@lesteryaytrippy7282
@lesteryaytrippy7282 2 года назад
This needs MORE likes, get pushed as a pinned comment. Like, I only realised the finger wave curls black women often wear in that era! And Betty Boop has those! Edit: after researching a little more, I realized that... Esther Jones is likely not even the ONLY inspiration. The artists behind Betty Boop observed a lot of Skat and other dancers in different clubs, even the ones where Esther Jones was. However, Ms. Kane was too convinced that she was solely the inspiration behind Betty Boop and may have felt she was being cheated out of the money and fame. The thing is, the late 1920s is filled with a lot of performers with similar hair, looks and such, even among african/black performers because that was the fashion of their era.

@@pudgelovesfudge5403 Baby Esther was a little kid performer that was more popular in Europe than in the USA. Helen Kane was the real inspiration for Betty Boop. Kane did stage work, records, and some movies too. She was very famous in the late 20s- early 30s. If you compare a clip of Helen Kane and Betty Boop, you’ll see that they look and sound incredibly similar. When Kane found out about Betty Boop, she sued the cartoon’s creator Max Fleischer for plagiarism. Kane was famous for a scat style where she said “boop boop a doop”, which happened to be Betty Boop’s trademark line. Fleischer won the lawsuit because someone said that Kane went to one of Little Esther’s shows and stole the kid’s scat style. Apparently some other evidence was shown that Kane was not the originator of her distinct scat style. There are some rumors that the judge was paid off or the evidence was forged, but I haven’t seen any proof of it. It’s quite possible that Helen Kane based her scat style on Little Esther, but I don’t think there’s any remaining evidence from the trial though. Anyone saying that Betty Boop was directly based on Little Esther is completely wrong. It would be disgusting if Betty Boop was based on Little Esther because the cartoon has sexual innuendos that would be highly inappropriate if the main character was impersonating a little girl.

Betty Boop was originally a flapper dog. She was then changed to a human and was a red head that bore a lot for resemblance to Helen Kane although it was never directly a caricature of her. Helen Kane didn't 'boop' first, Baby Edith did during a show in 1928. All in all, Betty Boop is actually Little Anne Little, who is the voice and looks of Betty. So stop with 'Betty was originally black' or 'they stole and are racist'.

@@armyshope Baby Esther was a little kid performer that was more popular in Europe than in the USA. Helen Kane was the real inspiration for Betty Boop. Kane did stage work, recorded records, and some movies too. It would be disgusting if Betty Boop was based on Little Esther because the cartoon has sexual innuendos that would be highly inappropriate if the main character was based on a little girl.

Helen Kane (August 4, 1904 - September 26, 1966) was an American popular singer; her signature song was "I Wanna Be Loved By You." Kane's voice and appearance were a likely source for Fleischer Studios animator Grim Natwick when creating Betty Boop, itself a style originating from Baby Esther although It-girl Clara Bow is another possible influence.... it was a combo influence

I remember a Grampy cartoon where he uses his inventions to bring a happy Christmas to an orphanage where all the toys they got were so broken down that they just fell apart when they played with them. It had one shot that is genuinely sad, that shows a little girl cuddling her new baby doll, happiest little kid you've ever seen, and the back of it rips out and all of her stuffing falls out at once. Like...goddamn man, that's sad. Anyway, Grampy becomes this weird kinda steampunk Santa clause, and shows up with good Christmas food and toys to play with. I'm only realizing just now how sentimental I feel towards some of these older cartoons. I think I might go watch the one I just described now.

"Was Betty Boop inspired by a black woman? Esther “Baby Esther” Jones was a black singer in the late 1920s who worked often at the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York. She was known for singing in a distinctive baby voice. Her signature song was “I Wanna Be Loved By You” where she scatted the lines “Boop oop a doop.” According to testimony from Jones’ manager, Helen Kane saw Esther Jones’ act in 1928. Later, Jones learned that Kane was using, or had stolen her style of singing and she took her to court. A test sound film showed Jones performing, which disproved Kane’s claim that she was originator of the style. A Supreme Court Judge ruled that the baby technique did not start with Kane since she “failed to sustain either cause of action by proof of sufficient probative force.” Jones was awarded with a $250,000 infringement lawsuit but unfortunately was presumed dead in 1934, right around the time the lawsuit was ending." They are giving Helen Kane the credit because she won the court case. That's why Mojo said it.

Funny how so many people are angrily commenting that Mojo got it wrong when in fact THEY are wrong. The rumor of it being Mrs Esther Jones started on tumblr, where pretty much no facts are found. The truth of the matter is that Esther originally booped when singing. Helen Kane started doing it too. No it's not stealing because it's not a thing to have ownership over in the first place. Everything else, from the way she moved and acted to her voice and appearance were based on Helen Kane.

Of course Esther Jones was the original Betty Boop hands down. She was beautiful and talented. Like Paul Moonie said, white people steal everything and it's true. And you know damn well white folks would never give her the credit due because she was black.
@macaroodlemacaroodle9626
@macaroodlemacaroodle9626 5 лет назад
Actually, it didn't start on tumblr. I don't know when it first became public knowledge, but I first read about it in a book called "Hollywood Cartoons" by Michael Barrier. It was first published in 1999, predating tumblr (founded in 2007). It's an interesting read, especially about the early history of cartoons, but I don't agree with some of his judgments, and I find him... well, hard to please, and not very good at making his thoughts clear. And yeah, it sounds as if Helen Kane ripped off Baby Esther's signature style. There's a difference between emulating someone's style (i.e. Benny Goodman w/his style of big band music... who had one of the first, if not the first integrated jazz groups) and just flat stealing their persona. Here are some brief clips of her singing: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XJbuKVIOx2c.html Sadly, some white people did, in fact, make a living off of doing "safe" covers of Black musicians- and by "safe," I mean "performed by white people", "not nearly as good", and "giving no credit to the original artists". Pat Boone is a notable example, and the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"... well, there's a whole Wikipedia article that goes into it.

Baby Esther Jones was the one and only original 20's Boop flap! Helen Kane was so enthrawled with the Jones act, that she immitated it and made it as part of her own act. Max Fleischer was inspired by the Kane character, whom he later found out about its origins. That's when he got hit up with a law suit by Kane for originality. It was over thrown because of lack of evidence of originality by Kane, by which the judge made honorable mention of Baby Jones.... Esther Jones passed away in 1932 when Betty Boop was only 2 years old. Well over 80 years ago.... PS... Kane was not the only immitation of the Baby Jones act. Many before Kane Immitated this original act by the one and true original Betty Boop 'Baby' Esther Jones.
