I am a person who needs more sleep and I still find time to workout everyday, learn something new and do my job well. And then I still have free time... People say I'm just more motivated than most people, but the thing it, there are so many times that I am not motivated at all to do anything, but I do it anyways. That's what discipline is. Just do it ✓
Raymond Erickson it's a competition with yourself first and foremost! The sky is the limit. Emulate those who deserve it and then don't be afraid to be the object of their emulation once you reach their level. Pushing the limit is what we're here for
"Discipline" Indicates an authentic "Disciple" as confirmed by the First Commandment: love thy God with all your heart mind body soul. All is hence given.
Lots of truth here. I used to be 110lb overweight, thinking "its hard to lose it, how could I do it?". One day I just decided to do it, made it my goal to do it. A year and a half later I went form wearing XXXL to M size shirts. Not because of something special, but because I made the choice to do it, made the choice to have better health. Once you do that, like really do it, things change.
"New York City Hard-core: The way it is" 1988, cassette, opened my eyes and changed my life! And I have a 7" of Slapshot! "It's time to wise up, you must wise up, time for you to wise up!" The next motivating exercise is 8-count body builders...
The getting up early example is so true. The last 20 years or so I couldn't get up earlier then 7 o'clock - I thought. Change my job. Now, if I get up at 4:30, I'm late for work. I still need to ensure that I do get my 6 hours of sleep, but this is already 2 to 3 hours less then "normal". This tells me: We can to a degree change. The only thing I do not get is: Why the heck am I unable to apply this to other areas of my life. :/
I learned to like hardcore music from Jocko, I would like to know what he listens to now. I was surprised to read the lyrics of many hardcore songs and realize the lyrics are mostly about overcoming hard situations.
Glad he agreed genes play a factor, there is a rare one enabling normal healthy life on 4/5 hours. There might be a case for motivation too, but there's no real excuse for not applying discipline. Get some 👊🏻
Jocko is a beast in every way a person could possibly be beastly. From physical to mental, he seems like a superior type of human. So far above the average dude as to almost be from a different species. Love listening to this stuff and trying to apply it to my own life, keep it coming!
Rollins would be good. Sam Harris as well as Joe Rogan would be, too. I wonder if Jocko would ever have Tony Robbins on? Tony Robbins is such a great motivational speaker that I think he would be a good guest for a podcast like Jocko's. Also, as I have said before, I would love to see Jocko get Richard Marcinko, Robert O'Neill, Thomas ''Drago'' Dzieran, Nate Fick, Jason Everman, Mark Divine, Rudy Reyes, Nic Irving, Jack Murphy, Jim West and Wes Moore on the podcast. I think that they would all be fine guests. I have also said before that I would like to see Jocko get on some female veterans. I don't think he has ever had on a female veteran, I'm sure he knows some.
Nick Irving would be an awesome guest. I've recommended him a couple if times. His experiences in combat and his time out of the military fit in perfectly with Jocko's message. Also, he'd be the first Ranger to be on the podcast.
Everyone has to find their own individual limits but they can't do that without pushing themselves to/beyond them to see just what they are/aren't capable of, and that can't be done with discipline.
"What people are capable of". Bingo... the more I search out role models the more I am amazed, and can push myself further, in areas I did not even know existed or was aware of before. Gold: you can make the decisions/choices to get after it.
I'd like to hear Jocko's thoughts on whether he thinks "getting after it" can have a subjective meaning to different people. Obviously to Jocko, "getting after it" means being in the top .0001% of all people in terms of fitness. But as much as I'd like to do hundreds of pull-ups or push-ups, I've come to a place in my life where I'd honestly be satisfied with just getting back in "solid shape", rather than "world class operator" shape. I'm muscular but slightly over my natural weight and could probably stand to lose 15 to 20lbs. I'm on the back side of 30, and I had bilateral hernia surgery a couple years back. I think my repair is holding, but with a surgery that has a 50% recurrence rate, I'd rather not tempt fate by doing super strenuous workouts. I can feel pressure/discomfort at the surgery site when I work out too hard. I guess my point is that not everyone is Jocko Willink. Wondering if he'd brush my comment off as "making excuses" or if he'd be willing to concede a bit that "getting after it" looks different for different people. For me, "getting after it" probably looks like eating healthier, going on a run a couple days a week, and throwing in a few push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, dips, or other bodyweight exercises on my off days.
Personally, I think that pushing yourself to your own subjective limitations is exactly what Jocko's on. After all, he is human and still has a lot of the biological limitations that all humans do. But his limitations are on a way different baseline because of the fact that he went to /his/ limit. Not some metaphorical god like limit only pure discipline can grant. Or he might just be a demi god with humility, Idk lol.
Adam Brown, that's fair. I'm not making excuses because I freely admit that I can get after it FAR more than I currently am. I need to change my mindset and my habits. I just don't think I'll ever be anywhere near Jocko's level due to my own physical limitations and past injuries. And that kinda bums me out to admit, especially as someone who used to work out frequently. Each additional hernia repair increases the percentage chance of recurrence, so I struggle with wanting to do strenuous activities while simultaneously being wary of doing anything that may cause re-injury.
@@joaovily I remember someone else on the comments section for a Jocko podcast saying that they got the impression that Jocko doesn't particularly like David Goggins and I get that impression myself. Goggins talks about BUDS and Hell Week the way that Jocko says he doesn't like to talk about BUDS and Hell Week and also, as much as I like Goggins, if we're honest, Goggins seems to have been a bit high on himself and he would talk more about himself than about the military as a team and being part of a team and that it's not about you, it's about the mission. I'm not sure if Goggins is less arrogant and self-obsessed these days but ... in any case, I doubt that Goggins is going to be on the podcast anytime soon. I'd love to see him on but I don't see it happening. But hopefully, Jocko could get a guest like Mark Divine on! Mark Divine would be a terrific guest!
A great analogy for the pay now or pay later, is debt. Financial debt. If you pay up front, it’s like investing your money which pays dividends. If you borrow with the idea to pay later, you are going to be paying interest.
Jocko will wash my clothes? No hahaha humans today. I've been through one hell of a journey because of you humans and life in general. I think you hard working people is so underrated more than ever.. Good leadership my kids.. Why did my reality ever show a veteran being dissed by a person like myself??
I want to be hard-core disciplined. But I slack off, because I feel exhausted sometimes and then I lose discipline again. Also the switch in my mind from office to sport, which I often regard as another thing I *have* to do, is often hard for me so I avoid it :(
10 pull-ups a day is discipline. 1000 pull-ups is a discipline. The former is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for the latter. Something else is going on there (pleasure, addiction, etc.).
Awesome, pay the price. The tab exists whether you see it or not. But the payment can be made on your terms or someone/something else's. So what's the better situation to be in, ownership not victim hood. When ownership is attained, then the debt becomes an asset.
Absolutely love this excerpt, Jocko points to the fact, regardless your genetics, and yes genetics are real, yes, they play a role, it's about making the choice to get after it. Maybe you didn't score super high on an IQ test, okay, deal with it, play more chess, learn to get better. We should all reach our potentials, don't let ideas about genetics (i'm too weak, i'm too strong, i'm already smart) weigh you down. you are the progenitor of your own life experience, YOU make the life you have. Get after it. now bitch weights Jocko and Echo would laugh at, but still GOOD WORK. Rise above your own worst self.... (whisky edit complete, keep going)
I have a question, a team member of mine is keep wanting a day off and always rebel the shift schedule, what action should I take to prevent him to doing it. He always show up with medical leave, having day off every month, or skip work. How and what should I do
@Admirable I did the same. I use my ipad as an alarm clock. I lock my Ipad in a box, and put the key in my gun safe, then lock up the gun safe. No way I can hit the snooze with that system.
Not my fault your dreams were born perfect. Its time the kids lead kids. They only dream about something better.. Their imagination.. The time they have to imagine to make it better! We lead them through our knowledge!
It's funny that you should say that. I'm a big fan of comic books and plan to write books as well as comic books in the future(my plan is to join an army reserve after I go back to college and then after both of those, write books and comics) and I keep hearing people say that Jocko looks like the villainous comic book character Thanos from the Marvel movies. Yeah, he does...a little bit! Ha! Ha! But I personally see more of a resemblance to Matt Damon...a more bad-ass and manly Matt Damon or Matt Damon if he REALLY were Jason Bourne.
"On a mission, I might be so frustrated with someone that I might want to kick him in the face. Is that beneficial to complete the mission? No Instr. H. That's right because [he] will break you. BC."
Love the podcast, but as an audio technician the breathing on the mic pops is killing me. Get these i.ebayimg.com/images/g/X4MAAOSwjkxbenRq/s-l300.jpg curved pop filters, lop profile but still will make a big difference without being too intrusive
I'm sorry I didn't put the military and terrorist in order. I learned alot through gaming that's why I'm not choosing your paths! #CounterStrikeGlobal-Offensive! #quantomphysics #letsbetheonedestroyingthestar I think the sun tells us what feelings really is!
Jocko Willink grew up in my town. Some of the lazy people he is talking about that he grew up with... are all around me. Still here. It's my life goal not to be one of them
