I really think Jocko needs to make his own clock, he can call it the Jocko-Clock. Instead of an alarm sound, its just Jocko telling you to wake up, and his tone starts with him speaking in a whisper tone, and progresses to him screaming to get up. $49.99.
@@Christopher-md7tf man's a SEAL. If you can't enjoy unhealthy conditions and persevere, you die. imo, it's much better to push yourself too much and crash, than cruise control on weakness and passive mind states.
@@hopelesspandora4195 You're presenting a false dichotomy. This isn't either/or. You can be disciplined and get a lot done while still knowing your body's limits and the value of rest and adequate sleep. In fact, these things well HELP you be more effective and efficient and of course keep you healthy in the long run (it' s a marathon not a sprint). As always, there's a ditch on the other side of the road that you don't want to drive into. Burnout, dementia, and long-term injuries are no fun at all. And I get that Jocko's mindset would be incredibly beneficial or maybe even necessary for a SEAL. But guess what? Most of the listeners here are not SEALS, and neither is Jocko anymore.
@@Christopher-md7tf So you basically took the specifics of my point, disregarded them, added a either/or that I never suggested or mentioned, and also implied that I thought rest, adequate sleep and knowing your body are irrelevant things. correct?
1. Get an escalating alarm or set your alarm to a progressively louder song (Jocko recommends Iron Swan by The Sword) 2. Set your gear the night before. If you sleep with someone, get ready in another room to avoid waking them up. 3. Check your diet. Avoid carbs and sugar spikes. 4. Start working out before having caffeine. 5. Power naps. 6-8 minutes with feet elevated. 6. Get the blood flowing. Bang out 10 pushups, burpees etc. 7. Go to bed early. Go rest when you are tired, don't stay on your phone or on the Internet. Read a book to help you falling asleep.

I struggled to wake up early for years. It wasn’t until recently I found a solution that works. We all have hobbies or things we want to do but we put them off because more important things take precedence. One for me is video games. I like playing video games but I’m a grown man with responsibilities. How can I justify playing video games when I’ve got a long list of productive things to do? It seems like a waste of time. But then I sleep in for hours and waste even more time than I would’ve spent playing. So I’ve been getting up at 4 am everyday, playing video games for an hour, and then going on with my day. Yeah I might have “wasted” an hour playing games but now I’m up. I gained several hours I would’ve otherwise spent sleeping that I can now do more productive things. I do it every day so my mind knows first thing in the morning it’s gonna get that reward and it makes it easier to get up. Maybe it’s weak minded, but hey, it’s better than sleeping in. Also once you start waking up early you start getting tired earlier in the evening and it’s easier to go to bed on time and the cycle continues. Makes the habit easier.
I know so many people might disagree with me or what not but hey man, if you find playing video games enjoyable or stress relieving or a way of escaping for even just an hour, then go play some video games. If they make you feel good and give you enjoyment, then it’s not “a waste of time”. Just because you’re not out there making money or whatever, doesn’t mean it’s a waste of time!
Yeah this is a good tip....sometimes getting up to do something you love can help you ease into the day to do the other things that you don't necessarily love. I personally don't think it's weak minded. Got to find a solution that works for you.
All the best music comes from Pain and Suffering...think Billy Joel 70's vs his mid 80's Shit...... Think Phil Collins early 80's vs his late 80's SHIIIT
I scrolled through the comments, read this, laughed, then got up to the point where he actually said it, and *still* thought he was going to say rub one out.
I had to seriously simplify my life to be able to get up early enough. I made a list of what I needed to do in a day/week. I put it in order of importance. 8 hours of sleep, workout, 8 hours of work, etc. When I ran out of time... that stuff got farmed out to my family members or I got rid of it - cuz it obviously wasn't important enough. But I know that I want to get my work out in before my work, so I have to get up at 4 AM, do a 30-minute scripture study/meditation, then I can work out. So I know I have to get up at 4 AM, to get 8 hours of sleep - that means 8 PM. So I'm up from 4 AM to 8PM. Everything has to happen in that window. The end. No arguments. That has saved me.
Plus, for me, setting stricter deadlines like that to get things done.....i sure can get em done, hustling, rather than pitty pattying around wastingng time
@@journeyfurthur6396 I agree. When I was making the change, I used an app (OmniFocus) to write out a strict schedule. I did things when they were scheduled, and did not vary. I need to tighten things back up this week because it has been a bit too loose lately, but I have a basis and that is enough to help me keep going. The nice thing is, you can always shift and rework when life circumstances change. My work schedule is changing to 4pm - 12:30 AM... that will change things, but I will still be effective.
Your self-discipline is exemplary! But how do you have a social life if you go to bed at 8pm? Can you still maintain a healthy work-life balance this way?
When i was in the military i used let the bodies hit the floor. The one time I didn't get up in time and it made it pass the whispering. Spousal adversary at 0430
“Secondary and tertiary alarms”. That’s what I’ll call them now. 😂 I’m dying. “Toothbrush staged in another room”. I love the way Jocko thinks and expresses himself.
I personally don't like the watch alarm because I have the ability to just turn it off or hit snooze. I get up easier if I have to physically get out of bed to go turn off my alarm
Yep, Garmin has been waking me up silently for years now. I have an audible phone alarm set for 3 minutes later on the other side of the room. That motivates me to get out of the bed.
I wake up at 4 am. Every day. On my work day it gives me time to clear my head, have a coffee, check the news, make my lunch etc. On my day off I still get up at 4 but the day is mine. I don't have to think about work, can take my time and plan my day. Sleeping late takes time away . Thats my routine and works for me. But I do sleep by 9pm or so.
4 years ago my wife left me and took the kids after I lost a big job. I was deeply religious and prayed and fasted for 14 days straight. I had crones disease, overweight, and was diabetic. I lost 40 lbs and both sicknesses went away before the 14 days ended.
@Nancy dude I've gone ten days fasting, myself. 25-30 is where it becomes deadly. Diabetes can be 'cured' with weight loss. Have you never noticed that type 2 diabetes patients are almost exclusively fat fucks? Crones symptoms are exascerbated by weight gain and diet. Everyone in my family has diabetes and IBS/ crones. My grandparents and uncle died from complications related. Organ failure, foot/leg amputation, etc. They were fat fucks also. Since I'm predisposed to it, I'm careful. They are 'curable' in the sense that if you treat it properly, it won't happen to you.
@@michaelandrews4783 I'm also an atheist, but I don't waste my time shitting on people for their religion. Try to change their mind, otherwise don't bother. A one-liner, especially a low effort one, has never converted someone.
54 years old, in law-enforcement and a SWAT member… And I can tell you that my absolute best days and mornings are before hits. The night before setting out all the gear knowing I have to be quiet so I don’t wake the spouse, out the door by 0400 and ready to hit the door by 0600. Most alert days ever even though it starts out very quiet and peaceful it is absolutely focused. Great podcast keep them coming
Yes this is the fucking truth. Ppl pat themselves on the back as if waking at 5am is in and of itself some big productive achievement... when it’s not lol. What matter is what you do with your waking hours. Whether you wake at 5am or fucking 12pm lol
@@christophersurnname9967 No. Point of waking up early is giving yourself a big challange every single morning. Because it is so easy to put your head back to the pillow. By forcing yourself to wake up when your are too comfortable you increase your will and dicipline. And another thing is (atleast for my opinion) nights are not productive at all. You are more tired. Ext. And by waking up early you finish the task you need to do by the time most people get up. This feels great. And you are more likely to make the day count.
Alarm sounds Jocko Recommended: The sword - The iron swan (Starts slow and then eventually just explodes.) 100 demons - Repeat Process Absolute startler
Get a wind-up clock. That thing will wake you up from a coma. You do need to wind it up every day, though, at least I did. On the other hand even something quiet works really well if it winds up into something. I used Dio - Holy Diver as my alarm for a long time. After a while I woke up before the actual song started. Marine Vet. here...love the vibes of this podcast. It feels like you're in the room with two of your favorite leaders without the fear of being fucked up haha
I love how echo puts in more mic time now. He used to be very quiet and let jocko do all the talking but now he gives a good counter balance to jockos remarks.
I've had my life mostly fall apart since I got out of the army, but one thing I never let go was getting up early. My depression is so much easier to handle when I'm on a routine regardless of having something to do. I always get up at 0400-0500 everyday, even weekends. I don't have a spouse, only as dog. At this point, I get up without an alarm at the right times.
I had the brilliant idea to use “Wake up and move forward” from psychological warfare as my alarm. I keep my phone on silent all the time and forgot to check the alert volume. I promise you that Jocko saying “Get up and get up now” at full volume, 8 inches from your head will wake up even the most sound sleeper at 4:30am. Also counted as my cardio for the day.
echo shrugged off the last point but that might be the gold nugget of this whole video. Delaying gratification will build your character like no other.
@@mphase7575 It was possible because he had 270lbs of fat energy at 3200 cals per pound! He was medically supervised, they supplemented him with vitamins. If you do the math he had over 2000 cals/day available from fat.

Been doing 18 - 24 hr fasts almost everyday for 2 months now with 2 workouts a day on KETO and this Legend says to try 72 hr fasts. 😂. Love you man, pushing the limits bro.
“It’s so convenient to eat all the time.” I feel the same way. This three meal default modern structure needs to be further examined to find the optimal for health and state of well-being.
Key to waking up early for me has been Prep every needed item for the day ahead the night before Alarm at 4am: Keep my morning tasks simple and easy. I don’t bust into waking up at 4am and think I’m gonna go for a 10 mi ruck...I build my way up there from something small easy and something I’m not afraid of...
One tip I found by accident for being alert in the morning... Within 15 minutes of waking up, drink at least a litre of water. I run a nearly identical schedule to Jocko's and that's the deciding factor on whether I drive to work tired or not regardless of whether I have a morning coffee which I usually don't. I never made the connection to carbs tho. I'll have to explore that. Also the power nap idea is amazing. 7 minutes has always been my perfect number. And I always set 2 alarms but I don't know why. Second one never rings. I'm a very deep sleeper but it's never more than 15 seconds from when my alarm starts till I'm standing. And I use the quietest alarm in my phone with volume on low. It's called discipline.
wow, I just happened to come across your podcast after doing research for sleep improvement and it is really interesting that Echo mentioned retraining your mind to think that you have enough sleep even when you have fewer hours of sleep. It kind of fits into the puzzle. I spoke to a lot of people having less sleep when they really had more sleep than they need. And don't forget about the effects of sleep apnea too. If you feel tired and sleepy most days then have it checked, correct the sleep apnea, and the time you feel more awake apply those things that Jocko said
Love the idea about staging clothes. I do it. I also immediately upon waking turn on EVERY light. Screw it if it hurts for a second. Do it. Light helps tremendously. I do 40 push-ups and 20 air squats. Now I’m awake!
I was doing inventory the other day at work after New Years and I had pigged out big time New Years eve so I decided to do a 35 hour fast. One of my coworkers said he was hungry and I asked when he last ate and he said about 3 hours ago and I said "I haven't eaten since New Years eve. Weak" and he looked at me all crazy, lol. It's so liberating to be able to function without food. It's just one less thing to worry about on those days that are hectic and you can barely catch your breath.
Jocko nailed it with the alarm song suggestions. Iron Swan is my favorite track from the Age of Winters album 🤟 In my life, there is no greater source of pure energy than Metal. My build up alarm song used to be When by Opeth. If the first part doesn't wake you, 0:26 grabs you by the soul and rips you out of bed without a choice 😂
I use to wake up at 6:30, and thought I was cool haha, been waking up at 4:45 for 4 months now and feel great. Waking up for a 4am meeting at 3:15 tomorrow... I was missing so much life
I developed a twist on his alarm system. I have the phone alarm, which I always wake up before. But, I conditioned my dogs to eat breakfast at 0410. So now when I wake up at 0400, there are two sets of eyes staring at me and both of them are breathing anxiously about a foot from me. My wife doesn't wake up, and my accountability buddies usually keep their mouths shut until I can clear the hot zone.
For Alarms, especially when I’m traveling and sharing rooms, I use the soundtrack of the movie INTERSTELLAR for my alarms. All the music is very soft and cosmic.. I wake up 8 to 10 seconds after it starts floating in my ears..
The morning process is such an enjoyable thing. When you really love the woman your with, and you enjoy building yourself while building a relationship with her. Entirely the most supporting action you can make. And those 8 to 6 minutes. for me it's more like 30 (I messed up body chemistry over 10years) so at age 25, That's a fact you feel like a ROCKSTAR.
this is so true the idea of deception into training is so smart. In old MMA a fighter thought he was taking steroids but his trainer switched out the pills with just asperin so he really thought he was getting strong off the steroids but really was just training extremely hard to get in shape
I am a reconstructive surgeon and in surgical residency I had to wake up at 4:00 every day. I have continued that ever since and thank Jocko for advocating waking early. Getting your workout in and other critical things done while it’s quiet and there are no distractions is a great way to start the day. Unexpected things come up for all of us throughout the day and so it also prevents your workout from getting derailed.
Do what makes your body feel healthy! I feel best on strict keto and fasting but people nagged me to the point I stopped, but this has been validating that it’s good to do what I know works for my body. Time to buckle down hard again
I'm late to the party and just discovering Jocko. Love the advice, thanks or that! Regarding carbohydrates, he is referring to processed carbohydrates like sugar, flour, syrup, etc. Whole plant food is pure carbohydrates and absolutely not the same to your body as refined/processed carbohydrates. The only time you need refined carbs is any time you plan to burn it all off - like during exercise.
