The neck tie has its roots in military history. For starters, a collection of terracotta sculptures discovered in 1974 in Xian, China gives insight into the style worn by Chinese soldiers over a thousand years ago. China’s first emperor, Qin Shih Huang, wanted his army to be buried with him as his guardians in the afterlife. Lucky for all the soldiers involved, his advisers convinced him instead to have life sized replicas of his troops made to be used as his protectors throughout eternity.

Wow! That's a lot of hate towards neckties. I love wearing them, athough rarely have the opportunity with my work now.Maybe worth pointing out, the Ascot/cravat is no longer worn as part of morning dress to the Royal Ascot (or indeed in any other truly formal occasions where morning dress is required in the UK).

I remember the 70's when they were short really , really , really wide and the material was extra thick. Just the knot alone had to be registered as a deadly weapon. I was a kid and hated whering those poliester suits with those gawdy ties with the knots so big you couldn't look down . Like having a river rock under your jaw , and chin. Hope that style never comes back again.

I don't understand "high fashion" and formal wear either. It's cumbersome, constrictive, uncomfortable, and wholly impractical. One can create beautiful garb for formal occasions that are far more comfortable and practical simply by the use of fabrics and trim that compliment and highlight one's best features or stature. Simple medieval tunics and their modern t-shirt equivalents, relaxed fitting pants or jeans, with a belt or sash and a nice low heel boot are extraordinarily comfortable to wear.

@monsterfurby
@monsterfurby 2 года назад
@@pepsicherry6389 If we're going by time, I still beat you by half a decade, I'm afraid. But to actually answer your question and not just throw shade: Since neckties in general are going out of fashion, it's not that common anymore. I grew up in a fairly typically conservative family (my parents, born in '43 and '49 have been CDU voters their whole life) so there was some classism at play there. I was specifically taught to never tie it too short because of that association. For those who cared about these kinds of things, a necktie bound short was considered more of an SPD/worker thing, whereas a long necktie was an employer/capitalist/CDU thing. I'm pretty sure that kind of meaning stopped being relevant by the 90s, but older generations and some parts of Germany still maintain the idea.

Simone, you came close to cinching the origin. Sadly it seems you missed one important point. At least as I have learned it. I was taught that the origin of the tie came about one, or possibly two, hundred years prior to the Napoleonic wars. Used by various factions of the northern Italian city-states by thier Cavalry. It was used during battle as a means of distinguishing friend from foe. Hope that is still useful for you. Thank for your informative and often humorous videos.

The Roman soldiers was wearing those "scarfs" or "neck ties" as protektion. Because when you have an tight armor on you it will scratsh your neck and throat. Metal pressed against skin and movements does not mix well. This has been used even after the romans depending on the design of the armor. So there is actually a practical reason for it.
