That's what I love about history, especially naval history. There are some parts are even more interesting and amazing than scifi... WW2, bunch of Germans sitting in a fjord in destroyers ready to ambush a group of Royal Navy destroyers they suspected were coming in after them except... well it's the Royal Navy and HMS Warspite was in the area so instead of a few destroyers they could ambush, the German destroyers were greeted by Battleship HMS Warspite barrelling round the corner with her 15" main guns already pointed right at them. Warspite already had a reputation from the Battle of Jutland in WW1 but a Battleship counter ambushing Destroyers takes the cake. Then there was the time the USN charged so aggressively at the largest battleship ever to be built that they convinced Yamato's entire squadron that they were facing a much larger force than the actual force of Taffy 3 that was the grand total of 3 destroyers, 4 destroyer escorts and 6 escort carriers. One of Yamato's turrets weighs more than the whole of Taffy 3 and Yamato wasn't even alone. She had 3 more battleships, 6 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers and 11 destroyers escorting her but it was the Japanese that retreated and failed to stop the landings on the island of Samar. The heroism of Taffy 3 saved the majority of the escort carriers, landing and supply ships and more importantly the thousands of US soldiers being landed. Not having a dig or being a smart arse(not intentionally at least) Just bored and wanted to share what I thought of when I read your comment 🤗
MacFarlane might be a humor guy, but he does symbolism really well. The Union initiated the device twice to demonstrate its potency as a war stopping weapon of mass destruction, in order to get the Kaylon to surrender. Pretty much exactly like WW2.
The Kaylon vessels are perhaps the closest to realistic space fighting I've seen. Not needing to making big arching turns or have any concept of up or down. They spin in any direction is necessary for combat or travel.
Whoever the composer is my gosh...give him movies...give him awards...let him compose the world...i want him composing me walking to my car in the morning
Orville: We have a weapon that will wipe you out! You've seen it before! We have it and are ready to use it Kaylon: No you don't... attack Orville: Suit yourself Kaylon: Oh I am become error.
It was calculated. He might have been bluffing and the weapon was destroyed. He wasn’t. Then they sent a second wave to see if the weapon had a long cooldown period. It didn’t and could fire again almost immediately. They then realized they were entirely outmatched and agreed to a talk.
This season has really cemented the fact that this show is the Best Trek we've gotten since TNG and DS9. I liked Voyager and to a lesser degree Enterprise, but this feels like home to me. Bring on more of the Orville!
@@Seantorky3 It sucks big time. That show would be regarded as shit trek if STD and Discard did not lower everyone's expectations down to Earth's mantle beforehand. The Orville is the way.
@@Kanthannic Good analysis. I enjoy SNW and it is probably because STD and "Discard" lol are so bad. Orville #1 and SNW a distant second. I won't be watching Discard and its futile attempt to make things watchable by bringing back all the STNG people. Still will be a big thumbs down sadly.
@@stephendevore3902 Bingo. I think that was the reasoning behind having to hit them twice. Part of the logic behind not giving up on the 1st attack would be that it was an event that can't be reproduced easily. Did America have a 3rd bomb ready to go? I think they're overdoing it with the quantity of ships involved in these battles. I did love how there were elements of Star Wars and Star Trek. The Orville is way better than anything Paramount or Disney is making now.
@@jimberg98 America did have a third bomb in the works. The bomb would’ve employed what came to be known as “The Demon Core.” If you ever want to see how atomic weapons go wrong without detonating, do a YT search on it. Creepy stuff.
Gorgeous. Actual storytelling, too. GOT to start watching this show even though I deplore paying for half a dozen streaming services just to get a third of what I want to see.
I have heard it said many times but I will say it again, the Orville is the new Star Trek. Just like TNG it has evolved and matured in the season 3, I have gotten invested into its characters and connected with them, just like its supposed to be with good movies or shows. However, I have not gotten connected with STD, Picard or any other new Trek. Charly was a good character and a good actor, with proper character growth. She will be sorely missed...
After the ridiculous family guy series and its huge success, this guy flips the switch and does a more serious type of show (less ridiculous comedy) more science and reality stuff. The best part is its a wicked success, looks really great, excellent characters and the development of the main groups as well. I originally thought it would be a show centering around the two types of cultures and planets and their gravity fields, but then they start going to other worlds in a startrek esk ship and they are actually quite interesting ideas for planets, the democratically run world for example, wicked idea. I will be looking for this series to watch, looks really interesting.
The Kaylon vessels may be the size of Borg Spheres. But the Cube vessels of the Borg may well be a good deal bigger. And perhaps at least 6 times larger. That means that it'll take a lot more than the output of this device to destroy those. And that means more - not less - functionality.
Interesting indeed. Plus a Borg cube could hold tens of thousand drones while given their emphasis on efficiency a Kaylon vessel is likely occupied by hundreds, if not thousand Kaylon AIs.
That's not how the device works. At least my understanding of it, the device piggy backs off of the hivemind aka the backup cloud. All kaylon (besides issac) are connected to the cloud, basically making them immortal. Anytime time they activate the device (which WAS suppose to be an disabling EMP) it is amplified by the hivemind server signal and creates an explosion of kaylon tech. In theory if it worked on the borg, the more borg tech there is the greater the damage, only limited by how far the device's signal can be boardcasted
Space....The Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Orville. Its continuing mission: To continue the sci-fi adventures inspired by Gene Roddenberry's visions. To seek first contacts with strange new aliens and civilizations. To boldly go where no 'Nu Trek' has gone before!
@@Voltaic_Fire That's probably what the Admiralty would bank upon if the Kaylon decided to double cross the diplomatic team. En routethough fully charged, the device was being used at an obviously low setting. I base this on the fact that at Xeleyah, the device dragged the entire assault fleet. Imagine that same full power blast right at the heart of the Kaylon network it was designed to target.
Coming into Kaylon reminds me of the scene in the 1st Star Trek movie where the Enterprise is going through to the center of V'ger, although not nearly as drawn out....thankfully.
@@trueheart5666 That may be, it that doesn't mean they'd last particularly long in the heart of Kaylon territory if the weapon misfired for some reason.
@@Saiyanprince1114 They were also trying to reason with the kaylon, even if the design were recorded with Union Central, as I expect it was,,even without the original designers (Issac and burke) the union could've made more albiet at a slight delay,,,. They were trying to stop attacks by the kaylon that might have been more regular than the show allows us to see. and still trying to reason with them since they all know what the kaylon endured while subjugated. One ship with an admiral with the authority to make binding decisions shows more compassion and honesty than an entire fleet. Yeah, granted the kaylon don't yet understand those terms properly but,,, they aren't stupid by any means and the union knows it.
@@1987MartinT there is no friendly fire with this weapon, in its first encounter and use of the weapon at the beginning of this episode, the Orville was literally surrounded and shielded by other Union ships when they used the weapons, none of them were destroyed in the process while all the Kaylon ships were wiped out.
The design of the ship reminds me of that one from the show where the only scene i remember is when the protagonists deliberately plunged the ship into the blackhole and later on got retrieved by a passing ship
Disney is pulling the orville from Hulu and putting on Disney+ in the USA and Canada. It has been on disney+ in Europe. The rating must be awesome, it means a bigger budget from the house of mouse as well.
@@MrStrikecentral actually disney is getting ready for a second high point. Say what you will about mrs. marvel but with the coming series and movies disney is gonna soon boast more subs than netflix or HBO. And they have been dying to add a series that compete with Star trek other than Star Wars.
@@MrStrikecentral I just have it to rewatch the good shit Dinosaurs 1991, Recess, Gargoyles etc. with Orville on their it’ll just be another thing to watch on their
'Oh you have a big ass weapon that can instantly wipe out entire fleets? Well come on down to our capital at the heart of our empire'. See, if I were the Kaylon, I would've waited until the Orville was in range of like 20 ships and all fired at once, as pretty sure they were just using standard shields still, and destroy them before they had a chance to set it off again.
Ahh You forgot that Issac Said that if the device is already Active and if they Kaylon tried anything to disable it will automatically Activated Which means that if They tried to destroy the Orville the device will Also activated and they are in the Heart of Kaylon system. Which mean It will destroy every Kaylon in there since the Neural Synchroniz Matrix is in their home planet.
But they did hesitate, that was the point of the episode. They could've wiped out the entire Kaylon race, but they chose to not use it and keep it as a deterrent. Having power is one thing, but knowing restraint is the true sign of greatness. That's what the emotionless Kaylon couldn't understand - humanity's degree for compassion and restraint despite overwhelming odds.
Every clip has comments filled with people calling this better than current Trek. Being better than current Trek is easy as it has 100% lost it's way. Trek was about showing what we could be without ism's and warring ideologies while new Trek shows a future more screwed up by them than modern day. They forgot the basic Star Trek formula for inspiring people which is show don't tell. Show a better humanity working together without internal conflict. There is a reason that so much is inspired by old Trek in our lives and nothing inspired by new Trek. DS9 was when Trek started falling apart philosophically and the new stuff is simply deconstructing and vilifying that which came before it.
Actually they did foreshadow it in a previous episode with Timmins. When they talked about how with the information about their neuro network they can devise counter measures and some sort of weapon to fight them.
Rule of cool. It's a television series designed for entertainment. If they went hard science with all special and sound effects, you'd end up with a much more boring and 'empty' show. At this point, why not gripe about the background music?
Ever drove through or under a overpass or through a area with buildings? The part through the clouds sounded like they hit a current of wind. I mean really do people never go outside or something.
This isn't a Disney product. It's on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ anywhere else afaik, which makes Disney only a distributor, they don't have any other part. And you would do well to give this show a chance. It is one of the best Sci Fi shows out there currently, consistently good Star Trek where actual Star Trek only consistently shits itself.
What started off as "Family Guy in Space" has matured into quite the sci-fi franchise with great space battles, excellent character development, and genuinely good story line.
