You'll never see anything like this again, a film with all the big stars in Hollywood at the time that were available and a goofy story along with it! The glitter and the glamour and well dressed people and a different world and the likes of it, which we will never ever see again Ever Period!!!!!!!!
My Grandpa was nominated that year for "The Greatest Story Ever Told" = Fred M MacLean - Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color for: The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965).
Boyd is one of those legendary Hollywood actors who is more actor than legend, and I mean that in the best sense: though he appears in many films (some of them classics, 'Ben Our', 'The Best of Everything') one always has the sense that his talent was underused, that he was never given a leading role in which he could really make his own, which would blend his easy elegance, warm, idiosyncratic elocution, and understated acting talent into that role which we could call 'legend', and yet it is because of these characteristics he never fails to bring something highly appealing to every role (even in one of my favourite guilty pleasures 'Fantastic Voyage' - he's dynamite.).
No Stephen Boyd did not win Oscar for Ben Hur movie ' Hugh griffith won best supporting actor as the arab chieftain who owns the white stallion horses ' Chariton Heston won best actor Oscar ' Stephen wasn't in the favourite circle in Hollywood so he was snubbed " even if you view the movie in 2021 you have to agree Stephen Boyd was the best actor in the movie someday he will win the chariot race
This is also the way that they used to dress up for movie premieres back then: the tuxes, the gowns, the jewels, the furs, the long white gloves, and so forth. Nowadays, they dress like slobs at the premieres. Even the men who go to the Oscars don't even wear a tie. They also wear a business suit instead of a traditional tux.
You made this comment 7 years ago, but i,m telling you now in 2021 that it,s worse now than ever! Young people are so horrible now that they dont even want to get dressed up for Funerals only Weddings still and that is going to change very soon as well !!!!!
Where the heck is the dam full movie... l like this film! How are we supposed to watch it if the movie is jacked up in bits and pieces???? Someone needs to post the full of version...it's time!
jhassett2. i have seen the oscar more than i care to admit, but never for more than 10 minutes at a time, which is about how long i can watch it w/o becoming bilious; it is SO bad it's a masterpiece, but keep your viewing times curtailed--
they sure dont make em like that anymore --massala,awesome-ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE GREAT STARS ,ELVIS ETC THEY HAVE RETURNED TO THAT GREAT THEATURE IN THE SKY---GODS CHAT SHOW,ON 24/7-THE GREATEST PICTURE SHOW OF ALL TIME. X
Mr Westie -This was a great movie and the thing is that at times i had to remind myself that it was just a movie and not real life. Stephen Boyd played his role so well that it was it seemed so real . Also great performance by Elke Sommer.
Just finished watching this film on Blu-ray. In many respects it does show the Awards procedures although it has changed in many ways. In some respects it also shows what happens to an individual when he starts the climb up the ladder. It also shows quite clearly what happens when he falls and what happens to those around him. Tony Bennett tries to be the voice of reason/conscience, but Frankie (Stephen Boyd) has caused him to fall as well. About the best redeeming factor is the announcement that Frank Sinatra has won the Oscar. For which film is not told, but the announcement that another has won is the important factor. It shows how the buildup and hoopla over the assumed winner doesn’t necessarily mean that person will win the Oscar, especially when the publicity build up gets way out of hand. Still, even today, things pretty much work the same way, only now because the Academy is a lot larger, it is even more of a circus rather than a presentation of actors’ work over the last year of movie making. It’s a class award, but it’s surrounded by things best left for other areas.
@moiraregis This has been since been uploaded in full on YT and yes,it is awful. But enjoyably so.It's still up but I can't imagine who would want to see it twice.
@jhassett2 if you've gotten your inoculations; best check w/ the CDC--or at least keep a barf bag close at hand; why they never used THIS at Gitmo baffles me [the dream sequence featuring the pulsatile head of peter lawford alone would have unzipped my lip in roughly ten seconds], although perhaps even the Bush Administration would go only so far--good luck, and be sure to take frequent breaks to rehydrate--
2:20 Writer Harlan Ellison learned his original screenplay had been butchered by the other writers. Said he knew his career as a feature film screenplay writer was kaput when he saw his name in the credits! He discusses it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xe7VRUGPdP8.html
Hymie Kelly? Hi yerself Megyn. That flock of birds were real. Witnesses and fillum? Thank Charlemagne tha God or the writers of the last Cruz aide left standing.
Be honest. It was not a good film was it? But I would watch Elke Sommer digging holes somewhere in England and fillum with Earth again turn to the camera and say - we wait! Oh Patient Man my super hero still has not opened the envelope to announce best adhesive... The plot is so thick now it has a name. Herschel Walker! No offence Herschel but catch me for the apology running back wards for Trump's 2022 Xmas.
Funny but looking at this makes me think the Oscars were pretentious bullshit then and now. No one is finding the cure for cancer but they all think they are.
