They were an amazingly talented rock band that never got the accolades they deserved. They wrote all the songs, played every instrument on the albums, did all the vocals...but because they were religious, didn’t do drugs or sleep with groupies they were often overlooked. Such a shame. Merrill had one of the best rock voices ever.
The Plan album was written by the Osmonds around 1973. Anyone who hasn't listened to it in full, listen to it now. It's probably more relevant now than when it was written.
Hey, thanks for posting this. Watching this video reinforces my belief that the Osmond Brothers weren't teenyboppers-instead, they were very skilled musicians, singers, songwriters, dancers, etc. that should be given the same respect as The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc. And I dare say that Merrill Osmond is one of the great rock singers, up there with the likes of Roger Daltrey and Robert Plant. WHERE is the credit due him?
I agree! Once, I played Crazy Horses for a group of my stoner rock fan friends and made them guess who it was. The Who was the most popular guess. No one got the right answer, and all were shocked to find out it was the Osmonds!
What a beautiful song....Merrill your voice was always ❤️ amazing...The Osmonds are an amazing group of decent men....they should be the Hall of Fame..and they are very underrated...listen to their music 🎶 🎵...
Wow, so great to watch this live, I love "the Plan", it's such a great album. These guys were the real deal, and they were so young ! They should have been way more famous, and never got the respect that they deserved, they never play their songs on the radios, that breaks my heart ! I guess the promoters and art directors when for Donny and Marie for commercial purpose, and the rock critics and DJ's could never accept the fact that they were mormons and teenagers, such a shame ! I love to have friend in my man-cave, and play some heavy Osmond's tunes without them knowing ; and they always love it and ask me who it is, it blows their mind when they find out to is the Osmond's !!!!! Haha
The Osmonds were & Still are Multi Talent of The Highest Order. Each played multiple instruments, Wrote their Own music-Lyrics & Melody, and each one Danced Beautifully. Their moves were Never awkward or discombobulated. This kind of Talent is unheard of today. The Osmond ARE Legends!
People can joke about the Osmonds about their squeaky-clean image, but looking past the image, 1) They wrote a lot of their own material and produced it as well. 2) They could really play their instruments and 3) They could rock out, with "Crazy Horses" and "My Drum" being prime examples.Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre) really loved "Crazy Horses"
sidney Gwaltney speaking of the Jacksons, I cringe when I see the very young Michael and how traumatized he looked even then!!! Beautiful voice, though-just like Donny's.
I've attended shows where they played almost every instrument there is... did some tricky dancing, along with the excellent harmony. This family can do ANYTHING!
This video does an excellent job of showing off their talents. They are obviously singing live as well as playing their own instruments. Not only do they show off their famous harmonys but each brother (except Donny) also sings solo. The songs are each unique and there should be something to appeal to most listeners. I think this video is one of their best performances ever.
This is my all time favorite Osmond album! I had never seen this promo so I hadn't realized that wayne played the flute Shows just how talented they all are!!I do remember reading something about how the brothers all enjoyed Led Zepplin and really wanted to do more of a true rock sound and not all the bubble gum pop.
My dear Osmonds including sis Marie are the cutest & most talented since their Barber shop days! Check out their Europe tour..hardworkers all of them! And so spiffy clean & humble to this day..so blessed to exist along with their era! Long live my 'adopted' bros & sis❣
I saw Jay and Merril in concert last week on 21/2/2019 at Union chapel in England. They are so sweet and down to earth and still so talented. It was a wonderful experience and they sung in my opinion the greatest song ever "Let me in" and it still has power to make feel a lump in my throat. I've always loved the Osmonds and I know I always will !!!
The criteria to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is 25 years in the business, and they've been in the business over 50 years, they definitely should be in the RRHOF.
You know what bugs me about The Osmond thing. People who have the ability to spread it (DJ's rock writers etc) won't/can't for some reason come out and say it. The Osmonds have always been underrated just because of their teenybop image. It's just not fair but hey, we know and we can enjoy. The world will catch up, but still, it's a crying shame. And yes, Merrill Osmond is one of the most talented singers/dancers on the scene. They are all talented but he just stands out that tiddy bit more
the osmonds are fantastic musicians. donny's eyes just make me melt, they always have, and merrill's voice gives me goose bumps. thanks for posting this, havent seen it in years.
Wow! They were (and still are) fantastic. Merrill - ooh those incredible pipes and that amazing rock voice! Stunning, especially on Let Me In and Going Home!
I love this album. I listened to it over and over again in high school. It helped express my testimony and faith through song. I still remember all the songs. Thanks Osmonds!
I started getting into the Osmonds about 1971 at 6 years old.. I listened to this album over and over... wore it out... the message really got me thinking about God and His plan... I knew they were Mormons and I Baptist ... saw similarities between the two and a few differences... but didn't understand much more than God loved me... so it was "instrumental" and it did make an impression though... many songs from that era caused me to question more than bring any real answers.
ALL Christian beliefs are based on the same things. They believe and read the King James Version of the Bible. But as Mormons, they also have the Book of Mormon. All of these songs are basic to any religious beliefs.
I have listened to them since 1971. I am like you Karen I got teased when I was in high school, but I didn't care. I listened to what I liked. I have had a crush on Jay since 1971, I thought he was the cutest brother. I like the way he curls that bottom lip in when he plays the drums. It did then and still does drives me crazy when he does it. I can look at a picture of Jay and start smiling for no reason at all.
I agree that this is amazing, a masterpiece of their genius in writing, setting it to music, playing all the instruments, and singing. The not only do all of the above, they could sell a song because of their moves, style, and just the joy of performing which shows in their faces and expressions. I also like this piece because they all had a solo spot.
I had this album. Would put on the headphones and sing away...(drove my big sister nuts). So now, 46 years later, I’m singing along! Good grief - they really knew how to work together!
The OSMONDS must have been the most under-rated rock group in history and all because they didn't sleep around, take drugs blah blah blah makes me so angry to think what might have been :( But I guess their reason for making music was for a much higher purpose and they achieved that with top stars and some to spare! God bless them all, a real shame they didn't bring out more rock albums but we have this classic to grace our music systems and it graces mine frequently! Thanks for posting :)
Sooo underrated it's unfair. They were some of the best rock musicians of their time. I still have my Crazy Horses album. I still love them to this day.
@@alanosmond3131 you have no idea how many people played instruments and sang because the osmonds. I learned to play numerous instruments and arrange vocals because you guys did it. Made it look easy but it wasn't . it's was well worth it because I was lucky to tour playing bass with many prominent rock stars. When they ask me who i listened to growing up they are NEVER surprised when i say the osmonds because of my vocal abilities. You indirectly taught and inspired me well. Especially singing. I'm 57 and will keep doing this till I physically can't anymore. I thank you for the inspiration and a lifetime of smiles. You guys rocked.
@@BernieGarzio That is so cool! Isn’t it fun to express your feelings musically!!! It’s like another language. Some day we will meet. Want to go on tour? Ha! All the best, Alan
I love this video! The Plan album is a masterpiece..they wrote all the songs and each is so different. Great concept album of Life/God. Their music is versatile. They can do any style of music..so multi talented. They sure can Rock! Great singers, musicians and songwriters. It is a shame they didn't get the proper credit they deserved. The Osmond Brothers are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing this video!
I was a teeny bopper and loved Donny & Wayne, was just getting a bit over the bopper bit when they brought out this album, was getting into rod stewart, the faces, queen, but this album never got the recognition it deserved, its a shame they never got to do the stuff they wanted to do
an amazing album from a supremely talented band. and the message is important and more timely today than ever. thank you to julie (my wife) for playing the album for me.
Definately the greatest concept album ever - showing off the real Osmonds before the teeny bop image. This & Crazy Horses is their real music that was overlooked by the music industry. Most people only associate them with Donny, but he made it because of the talent of his brothers!!
After the teeny bop image!!! Because this album didn’t go as planned and was shot down by the radio DJ’s, they went on to do build the state of the art tv studio in Utah. When someone stole all their money, they sold it and went back out on the road to pay off everyone they owed money to, with out filling for bankruptcy. How many stars in the past 40 years would do that??? I knew I was a fan of the greatest group ever in 1969!!!
This was in a better, vanished era when autotune was unknown, sampling in the sense we know it was nonexistent, and musicians actually played instruments. Vocalists were actually vocalists and sang genuine compositions, not "sing-song prefab nursery rhyme" bullshit. God smiled upon this.
I am hearing tracks from this album other than the singles for the very first time. I've always been curious about this album, and man, what a revelation of their talent. All kinds of influences here, and I laugh at the comparison someone made of Wayne to Jimmy Page, because there are clearly some moments of Led Zep influence here. This would have been considered a classic album by the mainstream had MGM released one of these hard-edged tracks. The decision to go back to the pre-"Crazy Horses" sound and release "Going Home" trashed their momentum of changing from a boy band to a BAND. Then, MGM doubles down on that by releasing "Let Me In". Beautiful as this ballad is (it's probably my all-time favorite Osmonds track), it stood no chance with a record-buying public that now knew the Osmonds could do much more than dance and sing bubblegum. This is some amazing work. I was a casual fan, but in the last few days I have discovered so much more of what these guys were about. Utmost respect.
Yeh Benzo...they made some amazing music, for the time..(and even for now)...and no one picked it up....a real shame, 'cos they were brilliant, and thier lyrics....totally mind blowing....
The plan album is proof that they weren´t just teenageidols but highly skilled musicians. I´m so happy to hear it again mine is all scratches and I havn´t been able to find a CD. thanks
FANTASTIC. LOVE this. I get so carried away with the music I ALMOST forget to look at the 16yr old on the keyboards (I said almost) tee hee Thanks Helen Gailxxx
I realized they could really play when I saw a performance of My Drum from the Phase III album, but still just thought of them as an "act". I recall Dick Clark saying this was like their Sgt. Pepper album. Indeed it was. Bonafide genius. It seems, though, that they turned back into an act after this album. Nothing wrong with that, but The Plan is an unsung masterpiece.
CoolODaddyO I think that, at the time, their fans didn't understand it, and those who *would have appreciated it* didn't bother to listen. As a result, it didn't do as well as their more commercial albums and their management and record company wanted them to do something else. Then the D&M show came along and the brothers' careers wound up on the sidelines.
As a young fan at the time I loved the teeny bop stuff but when this album was released I loved it, I must say I was brought up with religeon so I knew what their message was but religeon apart the music is brilliant, such a shame they didnt get to do more but yr right, the D&M show happened, they set up the huge place in Utah to record it and it all went belly up from there! Still love them all though :-)
@ CooloDaddyO, The reason it didn't go much farther was the Donnie & Marie show started. The band had to work behind the scenes for the show which kept them from going forward with their singing careers. The Donnie & Marie show was just an act and the brothers had to fill in at times for the show. In truth, Merrill, Jay and Wayne didn't want to quit the band. It was either move forward as a brothers band or support the Donnie & Marie show. In truth, their father made them feel quilty if they didn't think of the two younger siblings. So sad when you realize the D&M show was just a fad compared to the brothers opportunity to remain a band throughout the years. They lost a lot of memorable music they would have made and we fans lost what could have been. @ lae21, their fans did understand their music. It was the younger fans that were Donnie's age that enjoyed the teenybop music. The rest of the fans were growing up with the older brothers and like them, the fans were growing into the rock music. @ MandyMcNuff, their music was brilliant. The best part was, after the teenybop music, the brothers were actually writing their own music. The Plan was all about their writings. This medley was part of the commercial for the album and like you stated, the D&M show ended up taking presidence over their own careers as a band. The industry didn't like that they built their own studio. It took away some of the industries control. Also notice they ended up having 100 million stolen from them. The industry had a part in that as well. If you take away the industries control, you end up thrown out one way or another.
I have been an Osmond fan right from 1972..my first love was Donny...lol.....i was 14.....I LOVE The plan...has featured throughout my whole life....never left me.....many lines from the songs are soo applicable to our every day lives....LOVE THE OSMOND BOYS.........xxxxxxx
No sabia que los OSMONDS hacían tan buen Rock and Roll... Recién descubrí algunas canciones muy potentes como Crazy Horses, Last Days y Gotta Get Love... me hubiese gustado que hayan tenido mas canciones así. Mis respetos y admiración a los OSMONDS. Saludos desde Lima - Perú
First: what a terrific vid. Never seen this one before and it so confirms the REAL talent of these guys. They can play. They can sing. AND they can hold a tune while dancing/moving about. Thx for sharing! But while watching this I couldn't stop thinking how utterly unfair they have been and still are treated by way too many people. Have they ever even listened to anything beyond Puppy Love? Anyway, someone here said 'it reached who needed it'. And that's exactly how it is. It's 'their' loss.
Wow Merrill. You and the brothers should have embarked on a Rock band tour while Donny was working on his solo career. I think we could have handled both! Merrill your voice is phoenominal.
Have to agree that this was so far in advance of its time. Didn't hear movie man, one of my favourites. The Plan was the first album I bought, and still have it.
@@kimarajamison6951 The Osmond Family are Christians The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the name of the Church they are Members of -- these are my older and younger Brothers
wow i cant belive i found this on here i was just having a good look around seeing what i could find annd happy to have seen this brings back memorys for sure and i just noticed the date tonight well its 28 may 1975 was the day i saw them at earls court in london wow that was a day i like to remember
This is one of the coolest Osmond videos I've ever seen - I love it!! Each one sounds so good here but I would have liked to hear Donny's sweet voice at least once.+(
Todd Butler; they are Christians, same as the denominations and Catholics. The name of their church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mormon is a nickname because of their book, the Book of Mormon, which is a second withness to Jesus Christ. So their are similarities among all of the Christian churches. They consider their music their mission and they live their beliefs. It's what makes them the good musicians as well as the good people people that they are.
ty for posting this is awesome. I did not know that Wayne plays the flute too. These guys are so talented. I swear they have more talent in their little fingers than I have in my entire body
