You've hit the nail on the head about The Real Ghostbusters incorporating more adult themes and ideas. How many kids' cartoons do you know of that had an episode centered on H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos?
I always thought that show with Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker was a childhood fantasy, like Sigmund and the Sea Monsters before I saw them both on Nick at Nite. Minty deep diving again!
Yes, I have some friends who don't really remember this version of Ghostbusters but remember the Real Ghostbusters. I do remember both versions and liked both. Also, not sure if I know about Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. I will have to check that out!
Definitely not a childhood fantasy. It was real. All of it (Cannot believe I just quoted Han Solo in The Force Awakens). I watched the show when it was on in 1975, and loved it. I also loved the Star Wars Holiday Special at the time. Now that, I wish, was a childhood fantasy...
Ffilmation should have had a movie to better promote their cartoon series and have more episodes in a 2nd or 3rd season. Instead of just one season. I remember thinking the gorilla was a female named Tracy until around the 10th or 11th.episodes. As far as action figures, I have: - Jake - Eddie - Tracy - Futura - 2 Prime Evil's - Haunter - Fib Face - The Werewilf
i was in High School when the original "Ghost Busters" showed up in 75. It was great! Watching it decades later, it still holds up! Very funny! Oh, yeah: Tracy was supposed to be the smarter of the three!
I remember watching the original live action TV show as a wee one. One line has always stuck with me: "The fog isn't the only thing that's dense tonight."
Up until I'd found out about its ties to the show from the 1970's, I'd always thought Filmation's Ghostbusters was based on Dan Aykroyd's early concepts for the Ghostbusters, as like you said, his vision DID include interdimensional travel, time travel, space flight, and if I remember correctly, his idea also involved a team consisting of John Belushi and himself, which would have matched up pretty well with Jake and Eddie: tall skinny guy with short round guy. Imagine my surprise when I learned about the short lived tv show. 😮😮
I do not know how competing studios discover what the creators of a products came up with like Ackroyd's idea for GB. They did not work together that I know of. I like you undoubtedly seen and or read many on that masterpiece of a movie and what it took to get that movie done in the incredibly short period of time. Now, maybe, just maybe, there was a collaboration in the beginning to do a cartoon adaptation of the movie to the small screen and they were going to use Filmation's services to get that done and a reality. It also could have been part of the deal to get rights to license the usage of the name for the title of the film. But the problem is, that just makes too much sense and the way the world works, making sense does not always equate into reality. People do do bad things. What also could have happened, is that they paid someone that worked on the project of the movie to tell them all the information they knew about what they had for the film. You must remember that what Ackroyd had was changed with the director coming in and gone was the aspect of the setting in the future and time travel and other dimension aspect. I think those were dropped for time contrants. But the problem is that when a new production came on, the only person that was left was Ackroyd. So, those other people were looking for work and money and like mist back then ignored their confidentiality agreements (they did not call them NDAs, then) and just took the money and told them everything. That was common place to do such, back then. No one kept a secret and money was and is king.
This was one of those cartoons that sunk into my subconscious and I thought it was a fever dream until about 10 years ago lol. Same with Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea. I think it's a pretty fun cartoon on it's own though.
I used to watch both series when I was a kid. I'd watch the slapstick Ghostbusters on weekdays after school, and The Real Ghostbusters on Saturday mornings. 😀
I remember that!!!!! The Real Ghostbusters was way more intresting to wake up and see saturdays. Back in the days saturday morning cartoons was a big thing!
Geez, you're taking me back with these shows. On the Filmation Ghostbusters, they would always jump up give a high 5 yelling, LET'S GO GHOSTBUSTERS!!!! Their theme song was different from the Real Ghostbusters.
My mom's used to watch the old 75 show. When the cartoon came out I was ten. She strolls in the room and said she used to watch this back in the days. Thanks to RU-vid I saw an episode or two.
I remember being a kid getting babysat by a relative, when I asked to watch the Ghostbusters this is what they put on. My 5 year old brain was not happy
A few yrs ago I found the complete set of this on DVD at Walmart. I watched this everyday as a kid. I liked it better that the bigger name Ghostbusters!
Man, watching some of those scenes is bringing back some long dormant memories lol It’s funny how as a kid, it seemed like it lasted forever. I’ve noticed that MANY cartoons I watched back on the 80s only lasted one or two season lol and they all felt like years worth of episodes.
My mom accidentally bought one if these vhs's for me. I was like, what in fresh heck is this business? Also, if this were a multiverse, having a crossover where Egon is just so infuriated by the lack if logic of the Ghost Gummer and other wacky ghost inventions. The two teams swap equipment & maybe the filmation team is gifted the schematics for a storage unit so the ghosts just don't shift dimensions temporarily or whatever. Peter gets stuck in the clothing change fun house. Slimer laughs at him. Tracy & Slimer have a cute rivalry. Basically writes itself. Prime Evil & Gozer team up.
OMG! I would watch such an crossover! :D Since animation can be expensive, it would be cool if IDW would make comics of that. They did a bunch of crossovers in the past.
The writer of Babylon 5 who also wrote Episodes for the Real Ghostbusters want to do a cross over of the other GhostBusters because The Parent Movie Company also own rights or shares in Filmation. But didn’t go for it. It was a missed opportunity because the last Episode of the Real Ghostbusters would of having them to meet the Filmation GhostBusters to team up against Prime Evil and Gozer who was to be relieved as the wife of Prime Evil. That would of been a good story and episode. The whole Episode would explain that there are multiple parallel Universes that have different GhostBusters and many different versions of Prime Evil.
My mom didn't know that there were 2 separate franchises, and she bought me a filmation Ghostbusters sticker book, bc she just thought it was Ghostbusters shit. I was so mad!
Totally forgot how insane the fun house montage is. The car was definitely cool, I remember it having hydraulics lol Crazy what we like as kids lol The Real Ghostbusters was obviously outstanding. Very grounded and well-written.
@@jaebee81 it was a cheap knock off, and myself, and all the kids i grew up with, laughed at it, not with it. It was worse then those early 90s Disney knock offs even.
The wardrobe didn't cost anything to run. It ran on ghost power. Lol. I don't remember seeing this back in the day. But I did catch up on it on Qubo a few years ago. I really enjoy these Weird Tales videos.
I grew up watching the original “Ghostbusters” with Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch, early 1970s. At the time, being a little kid, I was perfectly happy with this show. To me, it was scary enough! And fairly funny! Great review, Minty!
The background of the OTHER GB cartoon is actually pretty crazy. I remember this show coming on WGN Ch 9 in Chicago after school. The REAL GB cartoon came on WFLD 32 Chicago if i remember correctly. Ch 9 had ALL the great after school cartoons
Wow I had forgotten all about this but that montage when they’re getting dressed in their ghost hunting outfits brought it all back! I loved both cartoons back then.
I one thing thing I didn't like about the Filmation Ghostbusters was that earworm song. "Let's go Ghostbusters. Let's go ! Let's go! Let's go!" Over and over again.
Ah, Dic, the company that introduce me to anime when I was a little girl with Sailor Moon. Which also has it's own weird tale of how it almost became a mix of live action and cartoon when it was released in the US. Quite the story if you ever look it up. Anyways, thank you, Minty. Did enjoy this.
I remember when the first ads for the 1984 movie came out. I assumed that it was just based on the earlier live-action kid's series, and I thought "who, in their right mind, would bother turning that ... thing ... into an actual movie?" Luckily I was wrong, and I can't describe how relieved I was.
I feel like the massive fandom is people taking the piss out of it. When I helped run a Ghostbusters fan group, we would constantly quote the Filmation Ghostbusters and even bought one of the comics, in costume, as a bit.
Speaking of Filmation - speaking specifically about their live action stuff - it would be pretty amazing to see what you could say about "Ark 2","Space Academy" and "Jason of Star Command"...
I really enjoyed the Filmation Ghostbusters cartoon. As a kid I always hoped to see a crossover with The Real Ghostbusters. Of course as a kid, i didn't understand the legal issues over the name.
We didn't have this cartoon where I grew up, in the UK. However, we DID have the books oddly enough! I bought my first one on a camping holiday one summer. I always imagined these Ghostbusters AND the movie ones working together on cases. I now have all the 1970s & '80s Filmation episodes on disc from the States. 👍
It wasn't on TV in the UK but it was available on VHS. I remember being confused when I saw it in the video shop, I didn't understand how there could be 2 different ghostbusters cartoons. But I did figure out that addition of "the Real" to the proper Ghostbusters cartoon had something to do with it.
Ah-ha! I wish I'd seen the show back then too, but at least I had / have the books. I noticed that Filmation eventually renamed their show "The *Original* Ghostbusters" which I guess is fair enough!
Nice one, Minty. I remember that show. But they had one blaster. The portly one had a completely different gun that fired out what looked like massive wads of pink sticky chewing gum.
I remember being in 2nd grade and my mom telling me Ghostbusters was about to come on. I got real excited and sat down and this show came on. I remember being really upset and telling her this was not the Ghostbusters. Luckily that Saturday The Real Ghostbusters debuted and all was right with my little kid world once again.
I know the movie-based cartoon had better writing and overall quality, but its Filmation's that I enjoy seeing as an adult, since it reminds me of so many of my Saturday morning favorites from childhood, like the Archies, Inch High Private eye and other slap-stick ones.
I remember when The Real Ghostbusters on weekday afternoons, my brother and me use to switch back and forth between Real Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters, which now are called The Original Ghostbusters thanks to the DVDs
