As a Turk, the word "Rumelia" (in Turkish it's Rumeli) comes from two words: 'Rum' and 'ili'. Today the word 'Rum' stands for Greek people who lives in Anatolia. But the most correct term is 'People who lives in Rome'. Because when we first met with Byzantines we heard they call themselves Roman so we called them Roman. In old Turkish common use of the word 'ili' means 'Land of ...'. So when you combine these two words you get 'The land of the Romans'.
I tried leaving a comment earlier but I must have fallen asleep lol. I actually am falling asleep to this again now! Such great maps, history, and soft spoken relaxation. I really enjoyed seeing the differences from maps today. Of course your camera angles are also great. One of my favorite history ASMRtists! Thank you for this sleepy gift!
I just wanna say that I really adore your knowledge of history and it makes me feel cool too because I love history. It’s nice to see someone else share my passion. You seem to genuinely enjoy talking about it and I think that’s my favorite part of these videos, so please always feel free to make more no matter what the topic is (whether it’s history or not).
Hey, I think that's one of my favourite comments ❣ I really like making these videos (even thoughI don't feel particularly knowledgeable lol, but that's the first step to learning something new, right?) and it makes me really, really happy that that joy comes across and I get to share with wonderful people like you. Thank you!! And yes, you're cool 😊
Going to share my favourite Ottoman fact: the name "Istanbul" is believed to be a corruption of a Greek phrase meaning "to the city" which is how Constantinople was sign-posted. The Ottomans just decided that was the name of the city.
I love these kind of infos. Reminds me of how my country got its name: “The name “Canada” likely comes from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement.” In 1535, two Aboriginal youths told French explorer Jacques Cartier about the route to kanata; they were actually referring to the village of Stadacona, the site of the present-day City of Québec. For lack of another name, Cartier used the word “Canada” to describe not only the village, but the entire area controlled by its chief, Donnacona.” I’m sure these kind of misunderstandings happened more often than not 😉
@@td2222 bu çok yanlış bir bilgi. Konstantinapolis yani "konstantin'in şehri" kelimesinin deforme olmuş halidir. "Stanpoli" >>> "İstanbul". Bu uyduruk hikaye nereden çıktı bilmiyorum.
Fun fact, coffee was introduced to Europe by the Ottomans. After the unsuccessful siege of Vienna the Ottoman army left sacks of coffee beans behind and that’s how the coffee was brought to europe.
Such a beautiful, magical combination of my love for history, of maps, and of ASMR. Your soft-spoken sharing of such interesting details along with the gentle map tracing is just wonderful. Thank you
It’s a stretch but I am almost certain that most of the world’s problems could be resolved if they watched your channel , everyone would be relaxed and move on. Problem solved. I’m a wizard. Just kidding, not really. Great video as always.
Beautiful and timely reminder that we are all not so far from each other historically and linguistically. Thank you for another peaceful look at our past and not so distant yesterday.
There is a point which you didn't know, in the area you see in the map part of persia, people speak in diffrent languages, hebrew, turkish, kurdish, arabic. In ottman empire too in borders ppl speaking various languages. In a duration persia and ottman both were turk but their official relegion were diffrent, diffrent group of turks. The persia kept farsi as official language. Many intresting things happened between these two countries
The most interesting and scary part is that so many people sacrificed their lives on the battlefield to conquer these lands, but the inevitable end is that people always want more, Human history is a constantly repeating cycle of suffering, war and disease.
I discovered your channel last week and have been trying to pace myself! Your content is so great as ASMR, and also as educational content. It's really a great example of using maps as primary sources to explore history. If they weren't so relaxing I'd suggest them for use in classroom settings!
Aw thank you, that's very sweet! But yeah, I fear most classes would either fall asleep or lose interest pretty quickly haha. But that reminds me, there is a fantastic program called Mit Offenen Karten or Le Dessous des Cartes on Arte that would be perfect for that. Afaik there is no English version, though, only German and French.
I’ve watched this video countless times. I never make it thru the entire thing without either falling asleep or being so fascinated by what I’m listening to 😭😭😭😭💛💛💛💛
Life has been crazy lately and i haven’t been able to watch as many of your videos, and I have missed them so much! Your voice is so comforting it is instantly de-stressing. Thank you!!
@@MelangeASMR hard to update a physical map hehe well one mystery for us. Can't wait for more and hopefully some map tracing about French language evolution / history ♥
Hey, I'm glad you've found me, thank you! And I'm sure you know ASMRctica, but maybe also check out ASMR Geographica, Secret Scholar, Tingleswithflyby or WelshASMR82_Maps. Maybe there's something in there that hits your spot as well :)
Here’s a thought (apologies if this has already been commented on); could the “land of the Romans” section of the map be a mis-translation? Rather than Romans, it could be in reference to the Roma peoples
No need to apologize! It's an interesting thought - I guess it's unlikely since the Romani have also historically been minority groups, but frankly I don't know.
@@MelangeASMR What you said in the video is exactly right. The Roman heritage survived. There's a story where when in WW1 parts of the Greek speaking ottoman empire was occupied by British soldiers, one asked "Are you Greeks or Turks" "We're Romani" was the answer. The Byzantine culture survived very long, one of the reasons being that the Ottoman Empire wasn't cultural imperialistic like European colonial powers.
No it’s referring to the Romans as the region was conquered by the Ottomans from the Byzantines, which was the Roman Empire that survived into the Medieval Period.
@@wyomingisfake4813 eh I wouldn’t say they weren’t culturally imperialistic. The Albanians for example were essentially given the choice between conversion to Islam or starvation.
That sending of young ppl from austria to the ottoman empire, because I knew someone from Turkey who went to school in Germany growing up which she said many kids did as an agreement between the two countries, so the opposite happens now!
Thank You Melange - really so very interesting and always mesmerizingly relaxing. So nice to be regularly relaxed and informed on such interesting regions of the world. This region such a strategic part of the world from prehistory right throughout conventional history and into today. Where east meets west. Amazing the Ottomans were able to dominate such a huge slice of what were the earlier Parthian/Persian/Sassanid Empires that Rome was never able to really subdue. To be held back from further encroachment into Europe by Austria and Hungary was really highly significant. Things would have been very different in Europe as a whole if these Ottomans managed to penetrate through that region. Very glad they didn't. Look forward to more on all of this next week. 🌸😉
Hey! Thank you for your thoughtful comment, I'm very happy you're still enjoying these little explorations :) There's a lot of history there, and I always wish I had some more in-depth knowledge about it all, but even these little glimpses of connections across time are so fascinating. I'm very happy I get to share it!
