The Overland Torque Tune Transformed My Tacoma! - OTT Update 

I just got my truck last month. Currently at 1200miles. I wanna get the OTT tune soon, but not sure if it’s too soon to do it since the truck is still new. How was the tune/truck been for you these last few months?

My truck drives great! Lots of punch in-town and shifts great on the expressway. I would have it done as early as possible. Zero regrets! I highly recommend the Lite/Mild tune@@jonathanamavisca3669

I got the pedal commander and returned it. It sent too many error codes, and to tell you the truth, I didn't notice the difference. Should have used that money to get an OTT.

@@ryoung6725 the pedal commander in my opinion it’s just a Band-Aid.. the Overland torque tune is the actual fixed and solution to making your Tacoma a fine tuned and running machine. Hope you get the chance to get the Overland torque tune soon. It will be well worth the money.

You know that was my exact thoughts when the 4th Gen came out about a week ago… everyone and the mother.. like everyone! pivoted so hard towards the 4th Gen.. now that is all everybody is talking about it.. and everyone said they weren’t going to be “that excited” over it..🤣 I think the biggest difference is that I plan to hold this truck for as long as humanly possible.. and my channel isn’t a platform to just get subscribers and talk about the “latest and greatest” Tacoma stuff.. the point of this channel is to help other Tacoma owners get the best and most out of their trucks.. I wanted to create a “Tacomaworld” type of atmosphere for troubleshooting, accessories, and mods etc. I’ll be pushing 3rd gen content for many years to come.. it’s all about the Tacoma.. not just what’s “new”. I’ll get a 4th gen once a few years have gone by, but I’ll keeping the 3rd gen.. the V6 is here to stay!🤙🏼

I'm new here. First time Tacoma owner, '23 SR5 Double Cab in Magnetic Gray Metallic with color matched wheels 😍. I'm playing "catch-up" since I decided the 3rd gen over the 4th. I've been in love with the 3rd gen since they came out, and now I am finally able to get the truck of my dreams. I'm heavily researching this tune because at only 451 miles driven, I feel that gear hunting all the time. I'm super interested in this tune. Thanks for the videos.

How is the medium/spicy? Your the first person I have spoken to that has it? Do you have any extra weight on the truck etc?

@@westcoasttaco The only added weight I have at the moment is the factory tri-fold cover and bed mat. I like it. It definitely has more punch to it and you do notice a difference. I do put the mild/medium on the truck before it goes into the dealer for oil changes (only a year old, so I'm letting them do the free oil changes right now). The time I didn't change it back to mild/medium one of the techs took it and chirped the tires as he took off. The service manager chuckled at that and asked me what tune I was running. He has a Pro and we ended up comparing which tunes and settings we were using.

@@laszlolanger5847 At least try OTT. If you aren’t happy with it, I believe they will give you a refund from what I have read. I don’t think that you will be disappointed.

How's the tune holding up? I'm wondering if it improves the gear hunting with cruise control, can't stand it dropping a gear with the slight inclines on the thruways around WNY lol

It does, it allows the truck to shift up and down when it should versus what the factory setting has set, when rolled off the assembly line. The shifting all around is smoother, quicker and methodically mapped. Appreciate the feedback👍🏼🤙🏼!

I did! About 3-4 mpgs per gallon!

Regarding the variable valve timing.. it is true that Toyota does seem to have a habit of not wanting the engines to get pushed harder at lower RPMs.. but I can’t help but wonder if this has to do something with the emissions and fuel economy.. the guys that have developed these “aftermarket” tunes spent quite a bit of time researching and developing this software. There’s also a lot of people that have had these tunes for a very long time on their Tacomas, and to my knowledge they have had no issues.. nor have they jeopardized the longevity of their engines and powertrain. However, there is always a risk, even if it’s a very small percentage… I honestly enjoy the truck so much now that the tune has been done that whatever slight risk there is.. to me it is worth it. I definitely don’t drive the truck hard. I’m not trying to race away in it every chance I get.. it’s just nice having a truck that has better shift points and doesn’t gear hunt so much… a well and balanced machine now.. I’ll be keeping an eye on it and report any issues or problems I may encounter. Good to hear from ya!🤙🏼

Justin stated the VVT system is re-worked for the tune. I think stock it uses VVT-iW almost all the time. OTT feels like it disables this system until part throttle cruise is reached. @@westcoasttaco

So that was one of the benefits I have noticed since getting the tune and after a few gas tanks have been cycled through. Not sure if everyone will have the same results?? But I was averaging about 309 miles on a full tank and I am now around 370..

Thanks! The biggest reason why Toyota has the vehicles tuned the way they do, is because of emissions.. even if the truck or vehicle doesn’t run as good, they have to adhere by regulations and by going for the best emissions rating they can possibly obtain.. it’s sad to see how much control the government has on even how vehicle manufacturers can make and engineer vehicles.. but that’s the honest answer as to why this is the way it is.. @@westcoasttaco stock 16's. The tuner recommended staying with 16's or finding lighter rims if I am concerned with performance. Light rims are super pricey so going to a set of Michelin LTX all seasons would be my best bet for amazing grip and good snow and dirt performance. Would shave a couple pounds per tire which is huge. I have come to terms with the fact that the Tacoma is no Cummins lulz!

Does it fix the pinging and knocking around 2000-2200 rpm?

@@confidentlocal8600 you will still hear the slight pinging and knocking sound from the engine idle. Not sure if that is what you are talking about.

On this video, I was on the light/mild.. however, they have been doing a mild /medium and everyone I have seen has really liked it.. they put me on a medium/spicy and that gives me a ton of torque.. some people depending on their build may not like it that much so I would say the mild/medium is probably going to be perfect for you if your truck doesn’t have a ton of weight on it. The tuner will let you try different levels before you leave. If you’re not happy with the first one, he puts on. I would say try what they recommend first and if you want it adjusted they can do that for you.

@westcoasttaco what motivated your move from light/mild to the medium/spicy? Anything in particular you didn’t like about the first set up? Any pointers to help us decide on the best setting possible for everyday driving? Just like you I’m easy on the truck and after watching your video I was almost convinced that the light/mild would be the right set up for me. However after reading that you stepped it up a notch or two I started second guessing. Thanks in advance

No worries at all! From what I’ve heard a lot of people have been making the switch from KDMAX and going with the OTT as of late. A lot of people say the shifting on the KDMAX is kind of aggressive and they aren’t super satisfied with it. I believe OTT has fine tuned their current version to the best of their capabilities. However, you never know?? They could change or add something, but I doubt it.. if they did upgrade something I believe that would be included in the initial fee you paid and you could upgrade without having to pay an additional fee. I’ll ask Q and see if he thinks anything new is on the horizon 👍🏼

It really is.. I’ve been with a few owners that already had the reheat and they were so pumped after getting the tune.. the tune will optimize the way your truck responds with the regear. The regear is in my list of mods for this year. 🤙🏼

@@djcraig1992 my mpg was better with the lite/mild. But the medium/spicy had more kick to it.. so I kept that one because I don’t have a heavy foot.

You don’t have to, but I did add the carrier bearing drop kit and the clamshell bushing by ECGS in the front axel where the needle bearing is.

Nope, it’s the stock Tacoma exhaust with the black OEM slip on tip. I do have the TRD Cold Air Intake..

Hi! I am running 89-91. I switch back and forth. It’s starting to feel better. I think I am just over thinking things with the tune. It drives way better than before, I need to just stop listening for every little thing and thinking it’s gear hunting when it isn’t lol! Thank you for responding I appreciate you!

Typically $500.00 is the most common price that I have seen.

Yep, they sure will and no trimming will be needed. As long as you keep the offset stock the largest tires you can fit are a 265/75/r16 or a 265/70/r17. Hope this helps and feel free to reach out with any questions!Always here to help!🤙🏼

If I were you I would get the OTT as soon as possible.. it will dramatically increase the driving experience of your Tacoma as well as allow the truck to shift and run in a more organic and natural manner.

I’m debating, also. I know I want the tune and I know the dealer can’t see the tune, but I’ve read that they can detect how many times the ECU has been flashed. I’d hate to have an issue come up and not be covered.

@@ronniereagan7998 you definitely need to do what’s comfortable for you and let’s you sleep better at night. I will say this though.. I have yet to meet or hear anyone regret getting the OTT. It’s amazing how much better the truck drives and handles after the tune is completed 👍🏼

$450.00 seems to be the typical price for the tune.

Wow that’s pretty wild😬.. mine has only gone up since I got the truck.. I did install the TRD cold air intake and now with the time i definitely gained some traction with the mpg’s.. was the decrease for you rapid or slow? Did you add a bunch of weight to the truck? Change the fuel type you use? Or check to see how your air filter is?

@@westcoasttaco i do pull a double jet ski trailer only has 1 jet ski on it, i do have a pedal commander set on city mode i had to get it cause the truck was moving very slow and had a big gas pedal lag, air fliter brand new, and we use premium fuel, i hate taking it to toyota, they said it's a fuel pump issue, got it replaced and has the same issue still

@@resolusions I’ve heard a lot of similar stories about people taking their trucks into Toyota and nothing getting fixed after the repair was done.. at least you got a new fuel pump out of it! That is really bizarre though…. The tune increased mine by almost 70miles.. The OTT may get you back up closer to 310? How often are you pulling trailer?

@@westcoasttaco pull the trailer mostly a lot over the summer season, im honestly thinking of getting the tune, will be worth the money for it, cause i have to fill up almost every week😂, love the video tho, thinking of making my build similar to yours i love it !

@@jwfordracing if you’re happy with the way your truck drives and you’re getting great feel economy then my philosophy would be to “not to fix it if it’s not broken” the tune made my truck, much more enjoyable on the road and improved my mpg’s but I’m sure the tune is not for everyone.. glad you reached out!🤙🏼
