I am about two thirds of the way through and I am so amazed by it. I really loved Patricia Westerford, her persistence and her wonderfully unique marriage. A really rewarding read.

A lovely articulate description of the book, without spoiling it. I can tell by the passion with which you talk about it, that it is a wonderful read.

I was so glad to find someone who loves this book as much as I do. It was amazing. I have read lots of Richard Powers books, beginning with _The Goldbug Variations._ All his novels have enriched my thinking, but this amazing book is the first one which completely altered my consciousness. I took it to a treed area in a park near my home while I intermittently threw a ball for my dog to fetch as I read. It was magical! My vote would be for Overstory for this year's Booker. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!

I finished this book, closed it and immediately began again. Such a beautiful, important book. I feel it has changed me, opened my eyes and has sent me on a journey to learn and reconnect to the “natural” world. Thank you for your wonderful review.

Sophie your reviews are so detailed and you make me want to read this one, especially because I am a tree lover. Also since you've started using the mic your voice is much clear. Love your reviews. 😊

Just finished this book and completely agree- it’s best read in shorter periods of time. Little and often will get the most out of it as there’s so many ideas that need to settle into your mind, it just can’t be rushed. Fantastic book with such an important message (I now feel very guilty about having a real Christmas tree this year!!). Thanks for the great review. Ps your little cat is just adorable.

I was intrigued straight away when I heard this book was about trees, because apparently I am one of those people ^^; and your review has just made me sure that I want to read this. Thank you for reviewing this and chatting about your thoughts!

Like you, I really appreciated this book and I hope it will be at least on the Man Booker shortlist. Did you also feel a little bit weird while reading it: Reading a book about trees and how important they are to us, but reading about them in a book created from trees? 🙂🍁

I totally did, I thought about that all the time and have continued to think about the idea of only destroying something if what you make from it is more wonderful that what it was before.

I want some book recommendations like cmbyn, upstream (essays), overstory. They aren't very similar but all have the vibe of nature.

Honestly, just hearing you say "it's a story about trees" sold it for me. I'll have to pick it up next time I pass a bookshop :)

Our book club loved this book and we had the most invigorating discussion of its elements. Weeks later we are still discovering science articles that show how trees move in groups over large areas of land and how they do actually communicate danger to each other. As you said, Powers makes the reader look at their environment in a whole new way.

I've had this video on my Watch Later list since you uploaded it, as The Overstory was on my TBR and I wanted to wait until I'd read it before watching. I finished it this evening, having started at the beginning of the month and absolutely loved it. Like you, I feel it is a book which shouldn't be rushed, as there are many ideas to think about and digest. My copy is currently full of tabs so I can find all the quotes I want to add to Goodreads. It would have been nice if it had won the Man Booker, but I'm happy it made the shortlist. It deserves the attention of all.

I adored The Overstory! You may also enjoy Powers’ previous book, Orfeo, about the beauty of classical music. Which is the other book that you’re rooting for to win?

I do want to read more of him for sure, I tried to look for some in my bookshop but no luck so going to try again online at some stage soon. It was Normal People but sadly no luck there.

I'm glad to hear that someone other than me paced this one out. It wasn't a decision I made whilst reading the book at all, but it was just such a dense and rich book that I could read about 10 pages at a time and feel completely satisfied. The connections made between characters in this was my favorite thing for sure, how all the little pieces were coming together was such a fun thing to read. I will say I was a bit confused with the ending, so if you have any insight on that I would love to chat about it. But over all I have to agree that this could be a very strong contender to win!
@SophieIslington

Remind me of the end? I remember that Nick was making a huge tree in art but can't remember more than that on the very end? DM me on twitter maybe? I really liked the characters too, though i definitely had favourites.

I will have to read the last few pages again and then get back to you! it seems like it was quite an unmemorable ending. Maybe the ending wasn't meant to be a climax at all I guess. But yes, will remind my self of it then we can chat about it :)

Wonderful review Sophie :) I didn't get on with this one as well as you - although I think that may have something to do with it being the last of my Man Booker reads. It likely would have been better to have read this one earlier and taken it a little slower...I loved the first part of the book, really loved it and I had that 'oh, this it, this the one' kind of feeling, but - disappointingly - I didn't think the latter parts of the book lived up to that initial rush of brilliance. I suspect it will be short listed, at least, and maybe I will find some quiet time to re-visit it, if not immediately then over my long break at Christmas. There was a lot to love with this one, I just think I picked it up at the wrong time for me. On another note, I am excited for the short list announcement :)

That's a shame, I did really like the experience, and I do think that it suited a slow read for me. What did you think of the shortlist?
