The P-38 can opener is an interesting but often overlooked piece of military hardware.

So simple, so small, so light and just about indestructable. Our family used them all the time. Those 3 pound coffee cans, back in the day, were a pain. Once you got the hang of it, it was not bad at all.

It’s a great little device isn’t it? I know a few people who can open cans faster with a p38 than with an electric opener.

I got a "Speaker" P38 at a surplus store 30 years ago and it's been on my keyring ever since. I pry with it, turn screws, open boxes and use it as a can opener and bottle opener.

That they are! I’ve found the P-51 which has a larger handle is much more comfortable.

Nice work on this tiny mythical accessory so practical. Less known but still used: The little key to open cans (winding of a pre-cut steel blade). By the way, nowadays you can buy large can openers with an emergency spoon (!) Looks like it was provided in Australian rations? It's true ?

Yes Australian FRED ( field ration eating device ) . The spoon was small and not much depth , if 10 green peas were scooped up 4 would roll off before reaching a soldier’s mouth .

Give any 10 year boy a P-38 and his mother may be surprised to find half of her kitchen cupboard canned goods opened . 12/22

I find that the P51 is a little more easier to use due to being a bit larger and so providing more leverage. Still an amazing invention. I never go anywhere without one
