My OBT is one of my favorites in my collection, its name is Tobasco, and mine is not chill at all 😆 He/She is finally a juvie and it is time for a rehouse...I have been putting it off for a few months cause I am nervous LOL!!! All the videos I have watched have scared me, thank you so much for this amazing video, you gave me confidence to rehouse my spicy little spider. MUCH LOVE FRIEND!!! 💕
Wow...hi, Brandi!!! I absolutely LOVE the name!!! I do hope that the rehouse goes well for you. Trust me, I totally get stressing about an upcoming rehouse; I've had some that I kept putting off. This might have been one of them, but it was because I really wanted it to go well so that folks could have more confidence when they rehouse theirs. Please let me know how it goes if you get the chance? Sending good vibes for a totally uneventful rehouse for Tabasco. :) Thank you so much!!!
@@TomsBigSpiders 😍 I am such a huge fan of yours!!!!!!! Thank you so much for your reply!!!!!! Made my month💞 I will be filming it soon!!!! You’re one of the best tarantula channels out there, hope I do you proud 😆🙌🏼 I’ll be sure to give you credit for why I stopped procrastinating 🤣
@@BrandiTV And double WOW...Brandi, I truly appreciate that! My channel is a bit obscure compared to some of the others, so this REALLY means a lot...I'm floored. :) I will keep a lookout for Tabasco's rehouse, and I'm sure that all will go well! Again, thank you so much!!!
Packing for post, rehousing and pairing for years never had any issue with them but every now and then they can bolt. That's not to say they wouldn't become defensive but much is how you handle the disturbance you cause them.
Wow. The difference between your videos and some other channels is astounding. You seem to have so much respect for your spiders, this is the first OBT video i’ve seen where they’re not attacking the brush and stridulating. I’m not a T keeper but the care you put in shows.
Hi, Victoria! That truly means a lot to me. I don't do this for money or entertainment purposes, and that fact often gets lost on those who are not in the hobby. THANK YOU.
Thank you for saying all this. I was so scared to get one because of their reputation but now I have 3 (all different forms) and all are so chill. I do realize each one can be different but I've giving them alot of space to do their thing. Mine will all run to their burrows/houses when disturbed. I have not got one threat posture ever. I just love this species and I'm so happy I made the leap and got them.
Hello, Cherette! You're most welcome; thank YOU for being open minded and for listening! haha I have two other color forms myself, and so far, I've had zero issues. You just need to give them some room to do their thing. Thanks!!!
That was a smooth rehouse. I have had anout 3 people say they wa t to get rid of their OBTs, and i get the feeling that no one that says that ever means it cause i will always answer 'if you are sure i will take her off your hands' and then never see them again.as much as people demonize them im pretty sure the ones that keep them actually treasure these amazing arachnids.
This species has just moved from the list of 'Ts I want' to the list of 'Ts I need' . I loved the idea of using the cardboard to make the area you wanted her to go darker.
Hi Tom! I noted if not in this video but maybe a few earlier, that you were moaning about the lack of Crystal clear containers. Check out your local Wally World and look for the new Rubbermaid containers called Brilliant. They lock solid on the sides and it's not too bad with height to ground to width ratios, especially with slings, juveniles, and sub-adults. It's a thick plastic but I have used both a drill or a soddering gun to make holes for how I want the ventilation to be. They also stack well. Other sizes are also available through Amazon. I like the fact that they are extremely sturdy and Crystal clear they almost look like glass. I don't know it you knew about them but thought I'd mention them to you about them. Also, thank you for recommending Steve with Arachnoiden. I bought two T's from him and he was extremely helpful with my order. Considering the time he and I spent emailing back and forth was actually funny since his website was just upgraded and I was having difficulty ordering. I'd find something that didn't work, he'd find out what wasn't working on his end, get it fixed then I'd find another problem. Two day later between him and me it finally worked! He was a great guy to work with and my two new T's will be on their way to me and arrive on Thursday the 18th. Any whoo, I hope you check out those containers and like them. They are around $8 a piece on average. Again thanks for the reference to Steve.
Hi, Linda! I honestly don't mind the milky ones as well, but every time I post a video featuring one, someone comes on and complains about it. I try to head that off! haha And I will absolutely check those out. Thank you for the heads up! And I'm so glad that you had a good experience with Steve. I've ordered from him a couple of times, and it went great both times. Thanks so much!
Hi again Tom, thank you for this video, it gave me confidence to rehouse my obt too, I bought her as mature already she's a female and my first old world...I'm not so confident of rehousing her coz she didn't grew up in my care so I'm not so sure about her temperament but one time I made a mistake feeding her and she did a threat pose, but I knew it was my mistake but after that mistake, never happen again...and seems she's alright so long as I did it correctly.. But rehousing was only a dream for me coz I'm scared that she bolt and I can't catch her but after I have watched your video, it made me feel like I wanna do it...thanks always for all your helpful videos specially for most of the newbies, like myself, I only been 2 months and already have 12 Ts mostly Mexican genus, chaco and 2x obt, one is sling about half an inch... Thank you again and more power for you and more videos to come, can you make another video for your obt after she settled in her new home 😊
Hello, Melchor! I'm SO glad that this video helped to take away some of the stress that you were feeling. That means a lot, as it's the whole reason that I do videos like these. I hope that the rehousing goes smoothly for you! And I definitely will. :)
I want an OBT now. I appreciate your neutral standing on these guys. I'm one of the types that was initially intimidated of this species, but this might be a choice of NW once I get confident in my husbandry. Great informative rehousing too and patience you give to your OBT.
I just wanted to present a video that didn't depict them as the scary monsters many make them out to be. Sure, they can be defensive...I'm not disputing that. But, if given room and if handled with respect, they can also be quite manageable. Thanks for chiming in!
Semi-arboreal is a thing. Try keeping a GBB. If you give it height, they will use it. Mine is in a foot tall container, and has made a burrow and actual web canopies, like floors in a building. Really cool to observe.
I was thinking of finally adding one of these to the collection, was going to set it up more fossorial, with 6 inches of substrate, a hide and some anchor points in a 5 gallon RUB.
I guess I'm getting a little better at this rehousing thing. Picked up a king baboon today. Critter is safely in enclosure without any unnecessary drama. I'll let it get acclimated for a day, then see if it will accept prey. sling is about 1" dls
YESSSSSSS!!! No joke, I originally had the common name as "Orange Beauty Tarantula", but I didn't feel like having people tell me that I got the name wrong. haha
I also think some Old Worlds in general get a bad reputation. LIke you said, it is good to be cautious but tbh, my S.Cal and p.Vittata have had some of the easiest rehousings. My OBT has a bit more of a feisty attitude since the last molt but nothing too bad.
Hi, Roy. I agree. I've had more trouble with the new worlds than the old worlds. I think that it comes down to the potential for a nasty bite should things go wrong.
Hi Tom again, I just want to know about these 4 different colors of obt, are these info right? If so, which one is more expensive than another? I just get this from someone's source and everytime I saw someone selling obt, tgey always mentioned rcf obt, is that bcoz it will make the obt more pricey? Thanks for the answer for this. More power. 4 color forms: TCF --> typical color form RCF --> red color form UMV --> Usumbara mountain variant DCF --> dark color form (not in the hobby as far as I know) Each color variation is found in different geographical locations, thought to be related to the type of soil on those locations.
Hello, Mechor! I've heard of NCF and RCF (the orange OBT), and now there are a LOT of new regional variants. I honestly can't keep track of them all. I currently have a Tete Mas as well, although I'm not sure which color form that they are calling it. I would have to do some research on them. The regional variants seem to be higher in price because they are new.
I would never use the word "best", as I'm sure that there are other alternatives that are just as good. However, I find that these work great for them. And a juvie would do fin in one.
@@TomsBigSpiders What size would you say would be good for an adult ? What I'm trying to do is plan my enclosure area so I'm trying to figure out the size of enclosures that I will need. I figure that it'll just keep increasing but want to start planning for what I have now :)
Hey, George! If it's an adult, that might not be enough floor space for it. I had mine in a 12 x 12 x 12 cube, and that seemed to give it enough room to both burrow and web without being cramped. Hope that helps!
"Be Calm Be Gentle and love your tarantula" Dave's Little Beasties' slogan Thank you, Tom, for rehouse. OBT is beautiful tarantula, I think I am waiting until I turn "60" to get my first tarantula. NO! OBT for me. lol
these guys are so misunderstood. everyone loves to hype them up like some big bad baby-killer. it's so annoying to see that misinformation and hysteria create ignorance in the hobby.
You are THE best Tom and let’s not forget the lovely Billie. You do so much to promote good husbandry with all your spiders and it’s fabulous to see your lovely new room. Long May you continue educating.
I am a newer keeper & have 2 OBT: a sling & a juvie. I actually rehoused the juvie by picking up her webbing with her in it, moved it to a bigger enclosure, and pulled the web open with some feeding tongs to encourage her to move in. Took out the old web as soon as she moved out.. They don't seem any more defensive than my other spiders & are incredibly beautiful.
I've done the trick with moving the webbing before, and it can work well! Yeah, if you give them space, they are usually fine. Glad to hear that the rehouse went well!
That's awesome! Yeah, just give them some room. You can also reduce rehousings by putting a juvenile in the adult enclosure (with lots of cover and web anchors).
Its amazing how much confidence I gain from doing my rehousings inside a larger enclosure. The fact that if the spider bolts they are still contained means Im not so terrified of something going wrong. I havent had a bolt since the first time I unboxed my P cambridgei, and its made me realize that some species I had considered to be extreme flight risks are very chill if you go slow and gentle. It helps when your hands arent shaking! Your videos help me visualize how I want my rehousings to go, and my recent ones have been so chill and uneventful. Today I moved a P ornata and it went super smooth! Youre awesome, Tom!
Hey, Natalya! I agree completely. I started doing that years ago, and it always give me more confidence. That said, if you go slow and gentle, you can usually keep the spiders calm as well. And one of the reasons that I do all of the rehousing videos when I do the husbandry notes is because I want people to be able to see a clean rehouse to give them more confidence when they have to move their own. So, thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear that youre P. ornata rehouse went well! :)
Excellent video as always. I love the respect you show for the spiders, and I always learn something while watching. I've gained a lot of confidence over the last couple of years watching your vids and using the techniques I see you using.
thanks for pointing me to C&M terrariums i have been looking for solutions like that for a while but couldnt find anything i tend to destroy the frame when i rip out the mesh just ordered some for the nano & mini, looking forward to their upcoming designs for the bigger ones susan seems to be a really nice person as well thats the kind of business i like to support
Unfortunately, I know of some tarantula youtubers with pretty prolific followings who rile their OBTs up for views (i won't name names) but I really appreciate this video!! They should be cared for with caution like any old world species, but I really don't think they deserve the bad reputation
Great video, gorgeous spider. I'm interested in the lid fir the enclosure. Can you share the link? I tried scanning the comments and did not see it. Thanks again for quality content .
Hi, Erika! I put a link to their Facebook page in the video description. However, here is a link to their new Etsy storefront: www.etsy.com/shop/CMTerrariums
Nice rehouse! I love my OBT, she's actually fairly chilled out. They get unnecessary bad press, from my experience. Like you say, I think its largely the set up that dictates their behaviour 👌🏼
I agree with you Tom, most people on youtube and facebook, antagonize OBTs too much. I’ve seen some intentionally disturb them to show “aggression”. 🤦🏻
some people love to piss off their p murinus for views and likes. it just leads to misconceptions and hysteria. now there's people that are afraid of these animals because of some goofs on social media.
@@lumiere2713 pretty much all of them do. i've seen dark den keep these african tarantulas in little tiny containers with no hide or waterdish, then he's like wow it's so angry lol!
I bought some of them myself...and I will be buying more. haha I love them, but I know that some folks won't want to spend the money. :) I'm glad that you checked them out, Jerry!
Hi, Alice! It was the same with me. When I was first researching them, all I found was the disaster videos. Sadly, there are still folks out there who do this stuff, and it really irritates me. Dear God, Jungle Bob...what a dingus. hahaha
I do an OBT care video, less than 24 hours later so do you. I watch it just to check that mine is set up correctly 😂. Only thing I did different was provide a deep burrow and substrate. Great video Tom
As soon as I'm done responding to comments, I'll go check yours out! I tried to mention many times in the video that you should also give them room to dig. I didn't give this one as much substrate because she has never really don't much digging.
@@TomsBigSpiders if you get around to watching my video it will make my day sir! Honestly your advice and level headed approach to stuff got me into inverts
You're just lucky with OBT. I've seen so many in *immaculate* setups that were just anger made flesh. The speed that these can shoot up a pair of 9+ inch tongs in unreal, a lot of OBT owners refer to their movement as teleporting. Still as calm as yours is, I'm glad you're still urging caution, if you get a wet bite from one of these, you'll never forget it for the rest of your life.
Hello, Steve! Sure, the potential is there, and sure...there are some high strung specimens. However, if you read the comments, it's not just me being lucky. There are MANY other folks who report the same. And I currently have 9 of them and have had no trouble with any of them. They can definitely be a handful, but I think that a lot of the over the top demonization of them is getting ridiculous. Thanks for chiming in!
Look into getting a endoscope for escapee, and picture taking. For less than $30 you can not go wrong, and you might being adding this to your must have equipment.
That's why we nicknamed my stepsons OBT "The Little Bastard " although it's a she so we had to change the b word to the female version. But still a fantastic spider. I'll message you pictures of her enclosure. Take care. Ibnsarachnids aka rob
I want this one so badly! Anyone in here who perhaps stumbles upon this comment; I have one peaceful Brachy at the moment, but i always give her respect (even though he is rather harmless) I have already planned for my second spider to be an OBT and i got to help with one of the rehouses for an OBT at my friends place. I am confident in doing this, but i would like to get ANY advice from someone experienced with them, as my friend is more of a "general" type of keeper. Like your enclosure setups (I really struggle to find more information on juveniles, which i'm planning to get). I'd really appreciate anything, thanks >.
Well, I gave all of the advice I have in this video, but maybe others will chime in! For juveniles, medium critter keepers or something around 2 or more gallons with some depth will work fine.
I’ve been keeping tarantulas for over a year now, and it’s been a slow process of growing and learning how to work with them properly and safely…and I’m so excited to finally be getting my first two P. Murinus slings today 🖤 Did a re-listen to your podcast ep on them yesterday, and after raising Psalmo’s without issue I feel ready. Thank you for teaching us about these animals in a way that breaks down the stigmas against them.
Great video and I agree as my adult female obt I raised from a sling and you can see me rehouse her without cupping I just let her walk from enclosure to enclosure
Just wanted to give a big thanks. Last year I gave 2 slings a try due to this video and set them up similarly. The juvenile to adult rehouse was the one I dreaded. I did both tonight, and it was so easy. They just clung to their bark and the rehouse was about as easy as it gets. If only my tapi and psalmopoeus could be so easy lol.
I've just had to learn rather quickly from your video as I've very recently just been gifted an OBT as a suprise gift. I've only been in the hobby about 2 months with my lasiodora parahybana who thankfully seems to have an unusually calm nature before I was gifted the OBT. My dad said to me "you know how you keep snakes and spiders and all those creepy things? well I got you another one" and then produces this glass enclosure covered with web. I go to take a look and see this bright orange abdomen sticking out of a burrow and I almost froze as I knew exactly what it was but apparently my dad didn't and somehow the pet shop let him buy it without even checking if he knows the dangers old worlds can be. Seems to have been chosen on the principle of orange one looks the coolest so I'll buy that one. Thanks to your video I'm no longer terrified of when I eventually have to re house it, just regular scared instead. At least that's an improvement I guess.
Ha! That's so awesome! Yeah, most of the people in the pet stores have no idea about tarantulas. I've seen OBTs offered with signs that say, "Great pet!" and "Docile" which could lead to folks trying to handle them. I just posted a video last week where I rehoused 4 of them to show that they aren't that bad. Congrats on getting one!
I have a few OBTs and all the hype has me psyched out more so than my pokies. Your videos and podcasts definitely calm me down a bit lol. I'll say tho... the largest one I have is definitely my boltiest T. Everytime we rehouse, it ends up on the floor running around like a mad woman 😂 1x 4" OBT 2x 2" RCF 2x 1" DCF Kigoma 1x .75" DCF Mikumi NP
I've got 3 OBTs in my collection. They're some of my favorite Ts. Pretty active spiders, great feeding response and so beautiful. Only 1 of my 3 is REALLY defensive but still predictable as Hell. These guys reputation is so undeserved. I have other old worlds in my collection that are way worse to deal with.
Thank you so much for this awesome video. I was just trying to decide if I should get this species. I wasn't particularly afraid of them but still wanted to make sure that this species is right for me. But now I feel like I could make an informed decision and pick up a sling at the expo this weekend. Thank you! 🕷️
Hello, and so sorry for the late reply! I think that, if kept correctly, they are no different than any other old world species. I currently have 7, and if given the room, they would rather bolt to their burrows. I think that the reputation came from folks keeping them incorrectly. I'm glad that this was helpful!
That was definitely a sane re-housing. I share your "sediments" about the OBT's environment is contusive to their attitude. I've witnessed many an OBT that is being poked, prodded, managed and spooked by keepers during the rehousing process. I'd have an attitude as well if I was an OBT.... "No Respect"... I've also witnessed keepers holding their 3-4" OBT's in 4" containers. I call those keepers "Slum Lords"... if I was an OBT in that environment I'd bolt as soon as the lid came off and there was a chance of escape! I believe that a lot of OBT keepers are just "Reaping what the sow".... On another note, I just wanted to point out that I've seen a few of your "catch bottle" containers and I think it's a brilliant idea. To take it to the next level, I was thinking for example that for OBT's you should use a "Simply Orange" bottle, for green T's, use the "Simply Lime" bottle and for yellow T's .... well...😁😁
Thank you so much! I feel like the OBTs have been unjustly villianized over the years, and much of their bad reputations come from improper setups and keepers who are scared of them. I agree with you completely! HAHAHAHA That's actually a hysterical idea!!! Haha Thanks!
Hey brother! Great video man you were right on point. They do get a bad wrap & they are demonized. Thus turning folks off to them. I, like you, when I started in the hobby saw those videos and said I would never own one. Fast forward 2 years. I got one as a freebie and wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out it is quite docile like yours. Hardly ever a threat posture or bolt. Just a lot of standing their ground. That one is now nearly 3 inches and I rehoused it recently with much negative anticipation but little to no resistance. I was shocked! They are also very beautiful but unfortunately I never see mine. I also just got a sling as a freebie. Fingers crossed I have a pair! Thanks for sharing that information with the rest of us. I know I learned something and that's ultimately the goal. Right? Take care bud!
Hey, bud! It drives me absolutely nuts, especially when I talk to folks who keep a bunch of old world species that say, "but I'll never keep an OBT." There are certainly more defensive ones out there, but if kept correctly, that shouldn't be an issue. And I'm hearing from more and more folks that they have shy or docile ones, which is a huge step forward from back in the day where everyone bragged about how "demonic" theirs were. Fingers crossed that you get a pair! I just bought another sling, and I'm hoping for a male myself! Thanks again, and take care!
These are my absolute favorite. Just recieved two .25 inch slings. Which means, I've now owned nine of these guys. My attempt with two H. maculata slings in 2012, of the same size, failed and its stuck in my mind like a sliver. So, I'm checking pulses thrice a day. But, I'm far more experienced with the murinus. Confident it's just jitters. D.M.
Hey Tom Long time watcher of the channel and listener of the podcast, first time commenter, thought I'd reach you here as opposed to emailing. I've just took the plunge and got myself a SAF OBT and housed her today, she is my 10th Tarantula and all mine so far have been juveniles and slings, this is actually the first near adult Tarantula that I've ever interacted with 😂 I was wondering how long it will take her to set in toughly? My juvies settle in within days to a week or so, just wondering if I should expect anything different from my OBT. Big fan dude, keep up the good work Lee ✌️
Hello, Lee! Congrats on picking up an OBT...it is by far one of my top 5 favorite species. And kudos on starting with sub adult! My girl settled in completely after a couple weeks or so, but it honestly depends on the setup. If the spider has plenty of coverage and places to hide in its new home, it will likely settle in much more quickly. Good luck, and thanks!
Awe, pretty T! I have a Goliath bird-eater, who I have renamed Goliath people eater that's much more defensive than your girl. After watching your vid, I want an OBT! Thanks!!! :-)
Great vid, Tom. And I think you made a good point that some keepers will deliberately antagonise their OBT's to get the "spectacular" responses. I was watching one vid the other day when the person said "OMG, it's SOOOOO angry" at which point, I said out loud "Well, stop poking her with a stick, you ass !" lol.... I'd be mad too... It wasn't during a rehousing, it was just pissing the spider off, as you say "for views"
It drives me absolutely insane when I see those types of videos. And I do the same thing! Hahaha Poor Billie has to listen to me rage every time I see something like that. haha
My world of spiders was exciting today. First, one of my C versicolors molted successfully. My H pulchripes was actually out in the open and voraciously ate today. I also learned that my C cyanopubescens molted very recently successully. And finally, my OBT didn't do a darned thing... out in the open but it attacks crickets so hard that despite it only being about 3.5ish cm it moves the whole enclosure which is a 32 oz, nearly 1L deli cup half full of substrate. Lol Oh and I think my black lab is in premolt. Lol. The G. pulchra. Edit: Lol I said kg instead of liter. Wrong kind of unit measure
Just got my first T, now I want 100! I was looking for a jumper to begin with but in winter in NY a local breeder had a curly juvenile for sale. I am HOOKED! I can't wait to graduate to old world but know enough to go slow. Definitely want to do it right!
That's awesome! Yeah, this hobby is SUPER addictive. I remember telling my wife that I would probably have a couple dozen some day (I now have over 200). Welcome to the hobby!
Brilliant video Tom. I was thinking of getting one soon. I was thinking with your blowing technique maybe if using a straw whilst doing it as u could direct air to certain place. Awesome stuff .
thanks for sharing that! my obt was defensive AF when i got her but it was like you said the enclosure was just too small for her. since she is in a larger one shes an angel! if i have to do some cleaning up or refill the waterdish she just goes back in her cave and gets out as soon as i am done.
Hello, M.K.! I'm glad to hear that you experienced the same thing. I've spoken to quite a few people who have them and have given them plenty of room, and they are just fine. Thanks for chiming in!
I just got 6 slings: 1 T. Vagans, 2 C. Darlingi, 2 O. sp. North Cebu (large (coz there is a dwarf tagged with sp. South Cebu)), and 1 OBT. All are under 1.5 inches. Of all 5 old world Ts I got, the OBT was the most easiest one to house. From the shipping vial it teleported straight under the moss. No threats and no other bolts. The other 4 old worlds were either bolty little wannabe escape artists or they attack the paint brush and stubbornly stayed in their shipping vials. I can't wait to see them all grow up. Edit: i am more scared of my wannabe arboreal c. Darlingi even if it dug a nice den at the corner of it's enclosure. Lol. Idk why it wants to be an arboreal when the others already dug their own abyss holes.
Hello, Kei! congrats on your new slings! So glad to hear that you had a good experience with your OBT. You'll have a blast watching them all grow up. :) And I have a C. darlingi that has a burrow but just sits calmly on the surface at all times. Weird little girl...haha
I keep 6 OBT, from different localities. All of them seem no worse then your general old world. It probably has to do with their sheer popularity. Because honestly, they're really not much different then any other african baboon. I love them. Top 5 favorite for me I'd say. Now lets hope mamma DCF gives me a good sac this time around. :) Great video by the way, been referring people to your content for years. Thanks again!
I have to up my P. murinus game, as I only have three color variants now. haha I HAVE to get more. And I agree completely that they are just like other baboons. Fingers crossed you get that DCF. :) Thank you so much, Tim!
Hi Tom, I brought an OBT last week. My first old world. She is around 2.5 inches. I put her straight into a 12x12x12 exo terra. She has a skull hide and lots of anchor points for webbing. She has already webbed her hide quite a lot and has started webbing the rest of the enclosure. She seems happy enough. Like you say doesn't like the light though. I'm sure if you give them plenty of places to retreat, and are aware of their capabilities and respect them there shouldn't be too many issues. Thanks for another great video!! Keep them coming! 🤘
Excellent video! Thank you for some proper information on the famous OBT and tips on rehousing them. OBT'S have some bad reputation, but I think they are a beautiful species.
Well I'm headed to patreon to sub. I see that everything is sold at but the $2 tier, which is cool. I just want to support. I'm so scatterbrained I forget you even have a patreon because you hardly even plug it. More people should jump in on the $2 sub though. That's only about 1 tank of gas a year... 30k plus subs, come on yall.
Hi, Jon! I HATE plugging it, and I closed down most of the other tiers when I started thanking people because I didn't want folks to think that I was trying to promote it. haha Thank you so much...I truly appreciate it.
I’m new to the hobby but I really appreciate your content and all your videos. Not ready for old worlds yet but my GBB, A seemani and A chalcodes are really amazing and fun to keep. I ordered the keeper cards so I’m fully an arachnerd! Lol. Thanks and keep up the great vids!
Hello, Philip! Thank you so much! And I totally understand; there is never any rush. And, for some people, the risk isn't worth it. And that's awesome on the Keeper Cards! Mine RU-vid "Legends" cards should be coming very soon! haha
By far my favorite species. I have 2 P. Murinus. One is very calm even during rehousing. The other one though, just opening the door of the room, she's full on defense mode, threat pose, tapping. Very bolty too. I keep them in an arboreal setup but i added more substrate for them to dig. I overflow their water dish once a month. My enclosures are a bit bigger than the need so i dont have to rehouse them too often. They grow kinda fast . 3/4"sling to 2.5" in a year.. their personnality change with each molt. Love the orange baboon tarantula "obt"
Hey, Paul! They are such awesome spiders. This one was such a slow grower, but I'm raising up some NCFs now that are growing much more quickly. Thanks for chiming in!
My OBT was my second tarantula because I apparently like challenges 😂 Mine is actually really chill and has never given me a threat pose. I have her in a tupperware container with about 7 inches of substrate and she's chosen to dig deep and just web up inside it. I only see her out occasionally and that's just her front half. Definitely going to be getting her an enclosure like this one soon so hopefully I'll see her more often.
It kind of annoys me that people frown on the term “semi-arboreal”. My Homoeomma sp blue and my Pseudhapalopus sp blue are both set up semi-arboreally. They spend as much time on the ground as they do up on the sides of their enclosures and the cork bark and leaves in their enclosures. They both have burrowed a little under/behind their cork tubes (because I give them enough sub to burrow). So if they’re not semi-arboreal then what are they?
What a gorgeous lady. I've always wanted to nab one, but was a bit spooked because of their exaggerated rep. I guess it's kind of silly since I've already crossed the poeci wall and had no issues. So I should be okay to pick up some more fast defensive species. My dream spider isn't even a tarantula, but is a Mygalamorph, the Linothele megalothoides, such a gorgeous spood and also a prolific webber. Why are spider webs so awesome?
Love this! I've been watching so many OBT videos and there are more demonizing them than appreciating them. The videos of people purposely teasing their T's are sad. But absolutely love your take and notes on the species
My OBT was my first old world, and I just love it! When I rehoused it last, it tried to do a runner, but once it settled in, it's been happily burrowed for months! I get crazy excited when I catch a glimpse of a leg or butt going back into its hidey-hole!
very beautiful. I love OBT's and miss mine very much. But like you Tom i kept mine like you do and never had any trouble out of her. Love those tops will for sure be checking into those. thanks Tom.
Hey, Tim! I IMMEDIATELY thought of you when I was putting this together. Again, so sorry to hear that. And I'm loving the tops. They cost some money, but they are just so convenient and they fit better than the originals. I'll be picking up more for sure. Hope all is well, bud!
really? no storefront? just facebook messenger to contact? I don't use fkbook. umm if they decide to offer a contact info other than censorbook, please update us. hell sell them through jamies or palp or even jambers. well if an option presents itself i want to buy 3. as for the video: great job!
Dude, it's two hobby buddies that just came up with this idea and are trying to get word out to see if there is a market. I believe that they are working on a website now. And thanks so much!
Ah finally someone is talking about why most people's obt are very aggressive. I've seen a lot of people felt proud when they shared their obt in a threat posture like "Look it's so aggressive. So cool". But just like you said, they were housed in inadequate enclosures where their web got ripped off every time the lid is opened.
Great rehousing and nice enclosure! This reminds me that i have to rehouse one of my Pterinochilus kigoma females. Ohh dear! She wont be happy, she gets quite easy irritated! I have noticed that P murinus kigoma grows much slower than other colormorphs of P murinus i have kept. The OBT have grown pretty quick in general, and i have had a bunch over the years. Very strange indeed! Yes, if given deep sub and lots of hidingplaces and debries, and a little taller cage their should be no problems with eigher attitudes or "ripping off their home" Sure, they are general defenssive but in such a cage they rather retreats. Another tip i can give with this speicies is to keep them in "frontopend" terrariums and place most of the substrate and decore back in the terrarium, because uf the tarantula is a especially heavy webbing creature, it doesnt matter if it weebs part of its home onto the "roof" of the tank, cos u open it in the front. The drawback is that it is harder to work in a front open enclosure. But your terrarium is nice cos you can open it from the top too
Hey, bud! Man, this OBT was one of my slower growing tarantulas. It took quite a while for her to even hit 2". The NCFs I'm raising are growing much more quickly, though. And great idea about the front opening. This enclosure has both front and top and plenty of depth, so hopefully I'll be all set with her. Thanks again!
I just got a juvenile OBT from a Repticon and it was in a container that had no height and the webbing was attached to the lid. The guy that sold it to me said it would be fine in that for a couple more molts and politely disagreed and explained why I would be rehousing it into a taller enclosure. The house actually went pretty good and the spider didn't threat pose me at all. It's made a beautiful burrow/web tunnels and there is a solid 2 inches between the lid and it's home! I went from no OWs to 3 with this one being my third and I love them to bits. Thank you for your videos. The rehouse technique with the bottles and cardboard gives me the confidence to not be nervous during rehouses.
Hey, Roxy! Sounds like a great call on your part...well done! I'm glad the rehousing went well. You just saved yourself and the spider a lot of stress. :) I'm so glad that this was helpful. :)
My obt matured male and I haven’t seen as many for sale recently. Do you enjoy the brown version just as much? I believe “fear not” currently only has this form available and have been considering buying one. I really love the orange colors of the OBT but, they are fun because of webbing and feeding response as well so maybe it’s worth it to try the brown version.
Hello, Cassondra! So far, my brown ones are still quite small, but they are WICKED hunters, and I'm enjoying feeding them. I would pick one up while you can find them. :)
Great video Tom and a species that I have on my bucket list. I have a question regarding something you said and some information I've read almost everywher. The usambara mountain region is covered by tropical forests and the climate seems to be kinda humid. Why do everyone suggest to keep them almost bone dry? Have you tried keeping any specimen with higher humidity weather?
Hi, Braulio! Great question! I think that these are similar to the GBB, who also comes from a humid region. Despite coming from places where the humidity can be quite high, they don't seem to prefer it and they definitely don't require it. In the case of the GBBs, everyone used to keep them in moist, stuffy cages when they first came into the hobby, and there were a lot of deaths. Finally, folks started keeping them dry, and they did fine. Part of the issue was probably stuffy cages due to poor ventilation, but we learned that they do great when kept bone dry. With the OBT, there have bene two occasions where I started one in a new enclosure with moist substrate. In both occasions, the spiders climbed up and webbed in a corner and didn't come down until the substrate dried out a bit. That's an indication that they prefer dry sub. Would keeping them moist cause any harm? Probably not if there was good ventilation. That said, adding moisture just complicates things, and there is no point in introducing that into the husbandry mix when it provides no benefit to the spider. I always use the analogy that folks that studied me in my natural habitat would find that through a good part of the year, I live in temps that are in the 90s with high humidity. However, that doesn't mean that I NEED high temps and humidity; I just tolerate it. I think that tarantulas are adaptable, and although they can come from places with harsh or extreme conditions, they do just fine in more temperate conditions. I hope that helps!
I love OBTs like you say their reputation for being fierce isnt completely deserved anyway but still its like all people think about them. but theyre really nice spiders and not difficult to deal w/ bcus theyre mostly predictable. Ive never had a OBT get scooty and start running around unpredictably they threaten and slap or just be stubborn and resist but either way if theyre not cooperating theyre p much staying put. theyre so pretty too ofc the orange ones but I also have the Usambara Mountains and Kigoma locality types and theyre v nice especially the Kigoma
Hey, Super Loops! I agree completely. It's a shame that people want to poke and prod them just to get a few views. I definitely have to get a Kigoma. I currently have the NCF and the Tete. Thanks!
I'll be getting my first g.pulchripes sling day after tomorrow. But, I don't have a hide yet. Can you tell me what things can I use to make a simple hide at home?
A piece of cork bark, a fake leaf...honestly, your sling will probably create a burrow, so you can just make a tunnel down the side of the enclosure with the tip of a pencil or the back of a paint brush.
Keep up the work! I just recently got a handfull of dcfs after looking for 9 months can't wait to see them grow.... My obt has not webbed much but she has a very intricate tunnel system in her substrate
I kinda compare it to pitbulls, ofc you don't wanna cuddle them lol but it's all about treating them with respect and not teasing them just to get views
From the C. Darlingi to this OBT, he gets to keep all the calm ones and we get the devil incarnates. Tom, you're missing out on all the suspense feeding and rehousing sessions we get to enjoy! LOL! Kidding aside, I admire how you really get to calmly work with them while getting little to none of their feisty attitude.
I have a c pagunus Vietnam tiger an lightning fast mean as hell ,the only old world I have ,I just rehoused because of mold ,but she scares the hell out of me ,when I see her out She's beautiful blue black ,,but super big fangs ,but she would rather hide first but then she ill bite the crap out u ,I'll going to stick with new worlds forever But in all if someone messed with me like we do I be piss off to so ,we provoke them it's our fault ,they just do what they do
I agree completely. If they are being defensive, it's because they are scared and trying to defend themselves. Limit that fear, and you usually have a much more relaxed spider.
What a great video! I try never to use the word "aggressive" because I don't believe that tarantulas are. Defensive, yes some of them. It's really nice to see a video showing patience ending in a good rehouse unlike many other channels. She is a stunning girl by the way!
Hiya, Toni! I never use the word "aggressive" either. I hate when it's used to describe scared spiders that are trying to defend themselves. Thank you so much!
Yeah I hate watching videos of people poking their OBT til it freaks out, and then they are like see how aggressive it is... Anything will get aggressive if you poke it with a stick enough
When I was first researching them, that and the shallow containers were a common theme when it came to the overly defensive ones. That drives me nuts. Thank you!
Bigger is better! Got my AF in a Theraphosha sized enclosure and she's a dream. Still a bit defensive of her hides but the ease of maintenance from the excess space is great. I always recommend it to people when I can for this species.
