Hi Tom, I've been trying to find a channel that provides in depth info and "common sense husbandry" and I've finally found it. Keep up the good work :)

Tom Moran is really the go to channel if you're really looking for tarantula husbandry. Let say Dark Den got me interested in the hobby he's the first tarantula channel that I watch but I got almost all the infos that I need from Tom before I got a tarantula and so on. Now me and my brother watch Tom for reference. By the way if know Jon3800 he's legend and one of the pioneers of tarantula RU-vid channel he also give good info about tarantula keeping, you should also check him out. To tell you honestly I watch Tom more now than Dark Den maybe because I'm pass the phase of entertainment and I'm more on the serious side of keeping.

You know, I always considered myself a Brachypelma man, mainly for their striking colors, but is says something that, when I decided to get back into the hobby after many, many years, G. pulchra was top of my list. And with everything I've heard and read about these sweethearts, I may just be a Grammostola man, at heart. I have 4 slings now. my G. pulchra, a GBB, a T.Albopilosum and an "Uknown"... My G. pulchra is always front and center. She's never hid, never burrowed, (she's about an inch, I guess) she's just "FEED ME !" lol

Hi. I got 2 G. Pulchripes slings last October 2019 as 2cm slings. Since then they have always successfully warned me hours before an earthquake came in my area (Mindanao, Philippines). They would climb the walls of their delicup enclosures when an earthquake (of any magnitude above 2, I think) is coming. Did that also happen to other Ts before an earthquake happened? Any keepers out there have the same reaction from their T?
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 4 года назад
That is awesome, and it really doesn't shock me. They would likely feel those changes more than we would. I have some that will come out before it storms...even when it's sunny out. They seem to sense it. I would bet that other keepers have seen the same thing that you have. :)

It's got nothing to do with this vid, but anyhow.... I have an b.emilia sling for about half a year now. Keeping it dry like all my brachys (which are my only T's that are not from a humid environment), but this one never leaves the water dish. Is emilia to be kept differently?
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 4 года назад
I've found that Brachy slings appreciate some moisture. Many will burrow to it when in the wild. Usually if a tarantula is hanging over the water dish, it means the conditions are too dry. I would definitely try moistening the lower layers for it and see what happens.

I got my G pulchripes at just under half an inch. It took close to a year to reach one inch, and in that time, it absolutely refused live prey. He ate prekilled crickets with relish, but would either run from or ignore anything live, no matter if it was appropriately sized.

Hey Tom, I'm new to the hobby and I have a grammostola pulchripes and a A. Geniculata. I don't recall you taking about this but if you do I missed it. I can't keep crickets alive for more than 3 days so I try not to buy them. Is there a pro or con to using mealworms most of the time. I usually don't go to the pet shop often my local b&m is often close by the time I get off work do on the rare occasion I do make it in time I get crickets and worms to last me a few weeks my slings? Are 1.5 inch and 1.25 maybe 1.5 one just molted and looks like it grew a lot. My fiance won't let me have roaches in the house so I'm stuck with crickets and worms until we get a house. Hey Tom, great video! Rehousing mine since he honestly deserves something a little larger. Picked up a little .75" sling a while ago cause you recommended them. He grew quite quickly and has hit 4.5" in under a year. Not going to lie, I am definitely not a huge fan of Grammostola (don't hate me!) I definitely prefer the more secretive old world arboreals/fossorials. I've also found that beginner species mature males are rather difficult to move as they have so many slings and are so readily available that not many people are looking to breed them. Hoping my little Coco Puff matures out soon and can go off to meet a lady. I say I'm not a fan of the genus, but I absolutely adore my little guy! One of the only t's I have ever handled (take "handled" lightly- he came out of his enclosure and I put my hand out and he just gently touched my finger with his little leg, which was adorable...) Definitely appreciate having owned this lovely little friend, but this is what you would call a "one and done" for me :) But I will absolutely adore and treasure him til he's ready to go! Your specimens are beautiful! Thanks so much for the info as always, time to go rehouse my boy! Keep up the awesome work, thanks for all you do for the hobby! - Charlotte

Great question! For species that need dry substrate, you can spot clean poo and boluses (the food remains), and they stay quite clean. I change out the dry ones every couple years. As for the ones that need moisture, I clean those out once a year or so.

I was wondering since here in the ph not everything is cheap is having a cork bark really necessary for my chaco? Or just make a homemade burrow

If you have something besides cork bark that would be appropriate, you can definitely use that.

Cool ,,, i have one now ,,, i wonder at times do they play dead in a way ,,, seems to be in the curly leg situation and won't move ,, looks dead ,, then when i pick it up in my hand ,, started to move a little bit leg by leg at a time ,, still in the curl situation ,, then all of a sudden get flighty and move like it suppose to ,,, mines is around the 1in mark for now ,,, substrate condition is right ,, not soggy ,,, wet around the water bowl ,, parts of the substrate fairly damp not saturated ' ,, the rest of the substrate is dry '
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 2 года назад
I've had a few legitimately play dead; and I mean healthy spiders that just freeze and can be poked and rolled over onto thier backs and they still won't move. It can definitely happen. That could be what you're seeing.

@@TomsBigSpiders I have another question ,,,, For now i had done research on why the chaco sling legs seems to be up in the air and it said possible severe dehydration ,,, before then i had the living space substrate dry and just kept the walls sprayed with water ,,, it is big enough to enjoy the cap size water dish but i guess not ,,, I had corrected some ways by damping a side of the substrate and had moved him or her on the wet side ,, what do u think of this matter ,, mines is at 1in + so far.

I have this for my first Tarantula 2 weeks ago but it hasn’t eaten since. It’s about 1.5 centimetres. I tried feeding it every night but it just runs away from the mealworms that is equal size as the T. Any advice?
@ker_h23
@ker_h23 4 года назад
I’ve found that Grammastolas really like to fast. As long as its abdomen is around the same size as its carapace, there is nothing to worry about. Just keep the water dish filled. When a T refuses food, I usually wait a week before feeding again. If you’re large feeding prey items, they may not take it. I would try feeding smaller prey, or prekilled/chopped prey.

Kehu I can’t find any suitable containers as a water dish for my 1.5 centimetre T 😂
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 4 года назад
Hello! It could be in premolt or it could be adjusting to its new surroundings. Once house, some tarantulas can take several weeks to settle down enough to start eating. Are you offering it live prey or prekilled?
@tzefenggoh5296
@tzefenggoh5296 4 года назад
Tom Moran I’ve once fed it pre-killed prey, but the T just ignores the worm, other times I just feed it live prey
