Hi Tom, I've been trying to find a channel that provides in depth info and "common sense husbandry" and I've finally found it. Keep up the good work :)
Tom Moran is really the go to channel if you're really looking for tarantula husbandry. Let say Dark Den got me interested in the hobby he's the first tarantula channel that I watch but I got almost all the infos that I need from Tom before I got a tarantula and so on. Now me and my brother watch Tom for reference. By the way if know Jon3800 he's legend and one of the pioneers of tarantula RU-vid channel he also give good info about tarantula keeping, you should also check him out. To tell you honestly I watch Tom more now than Dark Den maybe because I'm pass the phase of entertainment and I'm more on the serious side of keeping.
Just caught my G. Pulchrapes sling upside down this a.m.. but I had to go to work. Came home at lunch time to check on it and the deeds was done and it is a officially past that 1" stage.. soo proud of it. Can't wait to get home and see what it doing and maybe give it a lil water.
I am getting a sling soon from FNT along with my 2nd gbb (my first one is still not blue) but thanks so much for preparing me for ALL of the spiders I've gotten (and the ones to come)
Nice info. Currently looking for a first T, was thinking to get one or two slings but I can't decide on which species, there are so many pretty ones :-P
You know, I always considered myself a Brachypelma man, mainly for their striking colors, but is says something that, when I decided to get back into the hobby after many, many years, G. pulchra was top of my list. And with everything I've heard and read about these sweethearts, I may just be a Grammostola man, at heart. I have 4 slings now. my G. pulchra, a GBB, a T.Albopilosum and an "Uknown"... My G. pulchra is always front and center. She's never hid, never burrowed, (she's about an inch, I guess) she's just "FEED ME !" lol
Huge metal fan as well. Are you a fan of "Cattle Decapitation"?. I would imagine so as they've been around for decades. If you've not listen yet check them out. "Plague" their new release is good. Again as always, great video. I know it's a bit older but I've been watching your videos from the first over the last few months. I've learned so much and have been able to improve my keeping both at work and my new found passion at home
Great video! Definitely adding this to my list. I’d love to see one on Acanthoscurria Geniculata. I just ordered a sling and I haven’t seen much on their husbandry and care.
Hi, Amber! Unfortunately, I sent my mature male off to breed and now I need to get another one! I definitely want to do one on the A. geniculata in the future!
A. Geniculata is one of my faves! Care is simple, and their feeding response is amazing! Mine was a little feisty, but nothing too crazy. I got it as my 3rd T, and I think it's the one that really cemented my love for the hobby. Enjoy :)
Great video Tom, I love the Grammastolas. I have a little pulcheripes, it's super tiny and has been a slow grower, but I'm really looking forward to it getting its adult colours. It's a really fun spider though :)
Yeah, that's the only downside for me...the SLOW growth rate. Once they hit about 1", it picks up a bit though. And they are so stunning once they get their adult colors. Thanks!
Hi. I got 2 G. Pulchripes slings last October 2019 as 2cm slings. Since then they have always successfully warned me hours before an earthquake came in my area (Mindanao, Philippines). They would climb the walls of their delicup enclosures when an earthquake (of any magnitude above 2, I think) is coming. Did that also happen to other Ts before an earthquake happened? Any keepers out there have the same reaction from their T?
That is awesome, and it really doesn't shock me. They would likely feel those changes more than we would. I have some that will come out before it storms...even when it's sunny out. They seem to sense it. I would bet that other keepers have seen the same thing that you have. :)
Jus have to say thank you so much for this video. I have 4 G. Pulchripes 1/4 inch and being a beginner this video help me out alot🕷🤘😎. Thank you very much Tom Moran
It's got nothing to do with this vid, but anyhow.... I have an b.emilia sling for about half a year now. Keeping it dry like all my brachys (which are my only T's that are not from a humid environment), but this one never leaves the water dish. Is emilia to be kept differently?
I've found that Brachy slings appreciate some moisture. Many will burrow to it when in the wild. Usually if a tarantula is hanging over the water dish, it means the conditions are too dry. I would definitely try moistening the lower layers for it and see what happens.
I like your explanation mate.. All clear and you are good in it. Thanks. More videos please. Regards to your spouse, she helps you in making videos perfectly.
Hey tom love this video.. my female is just matured and just about 6 inches. If you are interested in a loan or want to do a project please email me!!! As always thank u for your hard work and amazing videos!!!! Thank u
I got my G pulchripes at just under half an inch. It took close to a year to reach one inch, and in that time, it absolutely refused live prey. He ate prekilled crickets with relish, but would either run from or ignore anything live, no matter if it was appropriately sized.
By far the sweetest species ive owned, my girl never showed aggression andthey seem curious as they always climb to the top of enclosure once opened will sit in the palm of my hand for an hour while watching tv.
Hey i was wondering if i should make a starter burrow to my juvenile but since i feel like the substrate i use isnt gonna hold enough like sticky enough my substrate is cocopeat just that
Hi, Vitas! You can try. I would give it a hide, but you may find that it won't do a lot of digging. When mine were juveniles, they just seemed to push dirt around but didn't really burrow.
Great video Tom. I hope people interested in getting into the Hobby or beginner Keepers find this video. Tons of info in it and will help people select their first Tarantula. The price of these make them very affordable. I've had two as slings and juveniles and are very interesting to watch.. mine were little bulldozers always moving the substrate.
Hey, Ed! Thanks so much, bud. Yeah, I love this species, so I hope that this video might convince some folks to give them a shot. And you're right...they are so affordable! And the constant bulldozing is adorable. Thanks again!
Would one of those large exo terra breeder boxes be good for an adult female? my female is almost full gown, I reckon another molt or two and was thinking one of these as a final enclosure.
Late to the party, but wanted to report my female’s size. I got her as an adult, and she has molted twice in my care, not gaining much size anymore. She is 6”. My feeling is that 8” is a myth.
You're not late...we keep these parties going. Bahaha. I have yet to see one that is 8" as well, although someone Did show me photo of a molt that was 7.5". So I'm guessing that it might hit 8", but only rarely. It's kind of like the mythic 10+" L. parahybana. Thank you, Olan!
Hey, Moggy! Awwww..that's awesome (love the name! :) ). I might have a taker for my male, but man I'm going to miss him. I've heard of a few folks using bean weevils for tarantula food. As far as I know, there should be no issues with them.
My oldest boy is 38 months mature. He is pretty shopworn - resembling a velour couch where the armrests have been rubbed shiny - but he is still doing well... bless his little spidey heart.
Hello Tom. Been a while.I these are a Great T. i have one and love it. Enjoyed the video don't get to catch them like i like due to my work travel, but i watch them when i can. Thanks for the info.
TIM! Great to hear from you, bud! I hope all is well with you and the family, and that you still enjoy the new job. NO explanation needed...I figured that you had been busy. Thanks so much for chiming in! :)
Tom you earned a sub. I really love your straight forward, to the point run-down so I spend less time sifting through the fluff. My new GP sling arrives tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited!
Hey! Im getting this species soon enough, is a 40x25x18 cage big enough for a fully grown adult? Because I dont know how to convert cm to inches properly yet, Thanks
Just got my first Ts and one of them was a g. pulchripes sling. It was completly burrowed with no way of getting up. Thankfully i now know this seems to be normal, thanks! Will do as you did :D
KC invertebrates ended up giving Emilee a red knee and I found out that in Maine we are not allowed to have them so I ended up giving her to my buddies kid that lives in a different state but Emilee was devastated and I found out I can have a Golden Knee so we will be hopefully getting one in January. She is all excited so we've been doing our research on them. This is one of the best videos I've seen on them thank you again for spending the time making this video
Hey Tom, I'm new to the hobby and I have a grammostola pulchripes and a A. Geniculata. I don't recall you taking about this but if you do I missed it. I can't keep crickets alive for more than 3 days so I try not to buy them. Is there a pro or con to using mealworms most of the time. I usually don't go to the pet shop often my local b&m is often close by the time I get off work do on the rare occasion I do make it in time I get crickets and worms to last me a few weeks my slings? Are 1.5 inch and 1.25 maybe 1.5 one just molted and looks like it grew a lot. My fiance won't let me have roaches in the house so I'm stuck with crickets and worms until we get a house. Thanks in advance and I can't wait for the next podcast episode
Hello! I think that I did a podcast about feeders a while back, but I'll have to revisit the top. No, a lot of folks use mealworms (I have about 2,000 in my fridge right now! haha). They work just as well as crickets. The fact that you can refrigerate them makes them super convenient.
Hey Tom, great video! Rehousing mine since he honestly deserves something a little larger. Picked up a little .75" sling a while ago cause you recommended them. He grew quite quickly and has hit 4.5" in under a year. Not going to lie, I am definitely not a huge fan of Grammostola (don't hate me!) I definitely prefer the more secretive old world arboreals/fossorials. I've also found that beginner species mature males are rather difficult to move as they have so many slings and are so readily available that not many people are looking to breed them. Hoping my little Coco Puff matures out soon and can go off to meet a lady. I say I'm not a fan of the genus, but I absolutely adore my little guy! One of the only t's I have ever handled (take "handled" lightly- he came out of his enclosure and I put my hand out and he just gently touched my finger with his little leg, which was adorable...) Definitely appreciate having owned this lovely little friend, but this is what you would call a "one and done" for me :) But I will absolutely adore and treasure him til he's ready to go! Your specimens are beautiful! Thanks so much for the info as always, time to go rehouse my boy! Keep up the awesome work, thanks for all you do for the hobby! - Charlotte
Hi sir tom ask for some questions my chaco golden knee is almost 2 years and 3.5 inch almost 7-8 months not molting this is normal? Btw here from Philippines!
Hi! Unfortunately, I don't currently have those species. I DID do a video on Lasiodora in general, and I had L. parahybana, L. itabunae, and L. difficilis.
I did see that video actually, that was the first T vid I watched. It was very helpful with mine. And thank you again for that info too. Very helpful in my time of need. I must say though.. This species of B. Klugi is phenomenal.. And get big too. My girl is a monster. Lol
So it's normal for my chaco not to eat often? Mine eat every 10 days at least and the size now is about 3in and I'm beginner just bought 2 chaco recently
What is the max size of the males and lifespan ? I got mine as a juvenile, Iv had him for nearly 3 years now and just discovered from a good moult that she is a he. Just wondering how long I’m likely to have left with him
Tom Moran Thank you so much for replying ! Mines is between 4 1/2 - 5” at the moment. He was my first ever tarantula and I just adore him. He likes to rearrange everything and went through a phase of constantly tipping his water dish upside down ! Definitely my favourite species
Got my G. Pulchripes sling on Wednesday it already burrowed to the bottom and closed the entrance with dirt it did not eat anything so i just left it to do its thing, temps do get above the 30C mark now and below freezing in Winter oh its only 2cm total length.
Mine was very defensive as a juvenile giving me a lot of trike poses but never tagged me but wow what a pretty T. Great videos Tom the have helped me out a lot and in fact your Harpactira pulchripes video talked me into getting this beauty!
Great question! For species that need dry substrate, you can spot clean poo and boluses (the food remains), and they stay quite clean. I change out the dry ones every couple years. As for the ones that need moisture, I clean those out once a year or so.
Cool ,,, i have one now ,,, i wonder at times do they play dead in a way ,,, seems to be in the curly leg situation and won't move ,, looks dead ,, then when i pick it up in my hand ,, started to move a little bit leg by leg at a time ,, still in the curl situation ,, then all of a sudden get flighty and move like it suppose to ,,, mines is around the 1in mark for now ,,, substrate condition is right ,, not soggy ,,, wet around the water bowl ,, parts of the substrate fairly damp not saturated ' ,, the rest of the substrate is dry '
I've had a few legitimately play dead; and I mean healthy spiders that just freeze and can be poked and rolled over onto thier backs and they still won't move. It can definitely happen. That could be what you're seeing.
@@TomsBigSpiders I have another question ,,,, For now i had done research on why the chaco sling legs seems to be up in the air and it said possible severe dehydration ,,, before then i had the living space substrate dry and just kept the walls sprayed with water ,,, it is big enough to enjoy the cap size water dish but i guess not ,,, I had corrected some ways by damping a side of the substrate and had moved him or her on the wet side ,, what do u think of this matter ,, mines is at 1in + so far.
@@TomsBigSpiders mine doesn't have a wire mesh tho, I just put some heavy cardboard that I punctured with many holes haha then I put something above so it sure wouldn't be removed unless I remove it. Btw I have a substrate of 2.5-5 inches (I scattered it around and formed a terrain for the spider to feel like it's in the wild)
I have this for my first Tarantula 2 weeks ago but it hasn’t eaten since. It’s about 1.5 centimetres. I tried feeding it every night but it just runs away from the mealworms that is equal size as the T. Any advice?
I’ve found that Grammastolas really like to fast. As long as its abdomen is around the same size as its carapace, there is nothing to worry about. Just keep the water dish filled. When a T refuses food, I usually wait a week before feeding again. If you’re large feeding prey items, they may not take it. I would try feeding smaller prey, or prekilled/chopped prey.
Hello! It could be in premolt or it could be adjusting to its new surroundings. Once house, some tarantulas can take several weeks to settle down enough to start eating. Are you offering it live prey or prekilled?
This video has made me appreciate this male even more seeing how amazing u cared for him to raise him to the beauty he is!!!! Btw the pairing was successfull !!!! Thank u sir
@@TomsBigSpiders is ok...ill save u sum time ...i have male p. Vittata ..p. Tigrinawesseli....cobalt blue... Sigapour blue...n hati hati ..ready to go n i dont want them to go to waste..if u have mature female ill ship u the males u need n wrk out sumthing if ur interested
Hey guys love the spiders. Please read the new terms for RU-vid it gives the right to suspend your google account. A bunch of users were banned for using emojis have to share before 12/10/19. People should not stand for such treatment. Take care everyone continue being awesome
Great video! I was looking forward to this featured species video, I have to say one of the most appealing beginner tarantulas. I’m glad I got one in my collection, can’t wait till mine get big!😁🕷
I know this is old & off topic, but LOVE your Cannibal Corpse t! I still have a few of my old ones I just recently passed down to my son :) great video also. My G. pulchripes is my favorite sweet, big girl.
G. pulchripes was my first T, got her in her enclosure for around 10 bucks. Last molt i could confirm her be a sweet little female (around 8-9cm legspan) absolutly love her, together with the C. versicolor my alltime favorites!
This was my first ever T. However she is a strange one. I believe she went into premolt this past July and closed up her tunnels. I haven't seen her since. I actually wonder if I should dig her out cuz this is starting to get worrying with how long this has gone. What do you think, Tom?
Tom. I'm getting one ! Was browsing on Fear Not last night and saw that Tanya had some slings and almost dislocated a finger cos I placed my order THAT fast. I can't wait. I'm besotted with this species. I'm also getting an LP as a freebie. Life is good.
Another great video.... thanks Tom!! I always get a chuckle at the amount of bulldozing they can do. Mine is approx 2-2.5inches.... great spooder. Keep up the great work!
As of now, it seems that not a single person disliked this video, so I don't need to gush about how much I liked it. I have a Chaco sling around one inch, so I wouldn't pass on a video about them. I'm also subscribed to T Haven and enjoy Alex's content. Thanks again.
