I so love this series, and as a Melbournian this episode is always a favourite. Loving your reactions. Fun fact: with an Aussie accent Melbourne is pronounced "Mel-bn" 2 syllables, the first is pronounced just like Mel Brooks or Mel Gibson, the second is just like "bin" but without the "i" Another fun fact: since before WWII, Melbourne has been home to the largest Greek community in the world outside of Greece itself. And another fun fact: the traditional name of the Melbourne area is Naarm, and was home to 3 different language groups of the Aboriginal Kulin Nation for around 40,000 years. The name Naarm has become more frequently used alongside or in place of Melbourne over the last couple of decades

About the blisters. Their boots in the jungle were probably disintegrating. And then issued NEW boots. And then the march. New boots then were rough on the feet.

Great review as always. I am glad to see that Toni is wanting to learn more, you will learn a lot, but the episodes will get more intense in the later few episodes. To answer your question though about why we were fighting on Guadalcanal, that is the largest southern island in the Solomons. From that position the Japanese could threaten the vital supply lines between the US and Australia. Even though Australia is a country, it's industrial base was relatively small and so it needed US supplies to carry out the war efforts. Also, it was a great staging location for US efforts to take back the South Pacific. In fact, the Japanese needed Indonesia for the deep oil pockets to sustain their war efforts, mainly the reason they attacked the US. From Australia we could push back the Japanese and do so from a strategic strength, where the Japanese had to rely on the Japanese homeland. David was correct as well about Chesty Fuller he is one of the most decorated Marines in US history. Looking forward to seeing more!!

Lol, not a Baseball field but a Cricket Ground. The US Marines were based at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, it was then, and still is the largest Stadium in the Southern Hemisphere. It was the main stadium of the 1956 Olympics. Funny enough it previously held the single attendance record for Baseball, roughly 110000. The stand in for the show was a suburban Australian Football ground

I did R&R in Australia. Sydney, not Melbourne, and Army, not Marines, a different war, and about 25 years later. Those few days passed in a flash.

I think the "scandalous for the 40s" part has more to do with heightened emotions during war than parental planning. People live for the moment when they don't know how long they'll be alive, and don't spend as much time worrying about the future. My opinion. Edit: Stella was obviously thinking a lot about the future possibilities when she preemptively broke up with Leckie, so my theory has some weak spots.

Though your still far be prepared for episode 7 which I believe is the most stressing as well as gut wrenching episode.

A lot of "relationships" got sped up during the war. The big risk of dying, and the long times of not seeing each other kind of puts thing in a different perspective.

David it's not vacation it is called R&R, rest and relaxation. Didn't react to episode II but you have to appreciate GI humor with the rice dinner menu, not the maggots just the sign.

If you’re interested in learning more about the pacific war there’s a movie called “midway” that depicts probably where the United States turned the war to their side naval force wise. There’s two movies made, personally I like the newer one that was made in 2019.

I liked Midway, that was thrilling, great aerial combat and dive bombing scenes. And "Greyhound" the WWII submarine movie with Tom Hanks.

I thought the original was a much better film. The new one was a bit too cartoonish for me. But it did cover events that the original did not.
