ll your hard work finally paid off and you have an elk down, but what's the best way to efficiently get it back to your truck? As we became elk hunters we struggled with this process. There was little information covering the entire process and especially on how to place the meat and antlers into your pack. As time passed we soon developed a solid method shared by many hunters here out West. We decided to create a film that was a showcase to the entire process from the hunt, to quartering, and finally the pack out. Like many things, this is only one of many ways to do this process. If you feel that you have a better method we would love to hear about it in the comments. The goal here is to educate and hope that more hunters have a good experience after their tags are filled come fall.

As an avid fly fisherman I got hooked on your fly fishing videos. Quality and editing like no one else on youtube. Now I have my first archery muley tag in Nevada and I'm glued to all of your hunting videos for the same reasons. Keep them coming!

Man, I've watched this a couple of times since it came out. What an incredible piece of film. I don't know what to applaud the hunting or the filmmaking. I said this before, but you should have your own show. I'm just sorry I don't make any money so I can't pay for it, but I love rewatching your shit on youtube.

You know you guys did such a fine job of packing that elk out, I think I'll invite you to pack out my deer for me next fall. I know that is a very generous offer, but that's just the kind of big hearted guy I am. In all seriousness, great video and congrats on a nice bull as well.

GREAT VIDEO! One of the best videos I've seen on this subject ... especially for the solo hunter. I've often wondered which parts to sacrifice in a warm weather hunt when you can only make a couple of trips out before meat spoilage sets in on what's left waiting to be packed out. THANKS AGAIN for sharing!

Good video. We do the gutless method a little different. We cut off the legs first, then make an incision like you were going to gut the animal but do not cut deeply, just the hide. We skin the top half completely then pull off the backstrap and both quarters and neck meat. Then we roll it over on the hide and skin the other half and repeat the process. Lastly we pull the tenderloins. The hide helps keep the meat clean and the cuts through the hide are in a area to keep hair off the good cuts of the meat. We put a short stick between two trees and completely debone the quarters before we pack out. This reduces the pack out weight and cools the meat better.

Great video. I wish you would have mentioned the rib and neck meat. There is a tremendous amount of quality meat that can be retained besides the standard 4-Qs, backstrap, and tendys. The heart is delicious if prepared correctly, its a bit messy to extract though.

Great video. All those saying they left to much meat have not deboned an elk far from the truck. There is no real edible meat on the ribs of a rocky mountain elk that is worth packing extra weight of fat and tissue.. They did take the neck meat. When you see I deboned carcass you can still see scraps of meat on the bones that looks like meat but it is only millimeters thick. Plus in Montana you are not legally required to take neck meat. Sometimes when its hot and you don't recover the animal right away neck meat can spoil fast because of the thick mane.
@pushtostart1377
@pushtostart1377 5 лет назад
Steve Shelley plus it’s not really waste, I’m sure some other animals will gladly finish it off, bears, coyotes, birds etc.
@MrSpykle
@MrSpykle 5 лет назад
I've never deboned one close to the truck but I at least get the heart, tongue, liver, and rib meat and make the extra trip without anything spoiling even in warm weather. Meat will keep in the shade as long as you get a rind on it. Don't be a pussy and make the extra trip

Great video. I perform a similar method, but typically cut off all the meat from the quarters right there in the field - leaving all the bones at the site of the kill. It only takes a few minutes longer on each quarter to de-bone everything. Elk bones are dense and heavy, so why bother carrying them back only to dispose of them later. I'd love to see a quick video on how to prep the skull for a Euro-style mount like you did with this particular bull. Looked like you picked it clean within a short period of time. Please share your magic. :)
@MontanaWild
@MontanaWild 9 лет назад
bighuntermark1 We deboned the hind quarters but didn't on the front as we were only about a mile from the truck. As for prepping the skull we simple make a cut from the rear of the skull running forward between the antlers down to the tip of the nose. From there skin the hide back to both sides and away from the skull. Once the skin is off remove the jaw which can take a little time the first time you do it.

Great post. Nothing like arriving at the truck with the last load of the night! I've often thought about the gutless method as a better way of processing an elk, especially when hunting solo. However, I really like to harvest the liver and heart as well as all that rib/flank meat that might be left behind. Is there any way to get this meat as well without making too much of a mess?

Yes he did have a deer tag, but its more of just a common practice more than anything. It also looks more aesthetically appealing when shooting images so that people know you were in fact bow hunting, and not rifle hunting (needing hunters orange in MT).
