Great expansion to the K8MRD Mod. Especially for 15 meters. I like that. The cool thing about the EFHW with the K8MRD Mod is you can make whatever links you want. 12, 15, 17, whatever. Its an EFHW. It'll just work! I like how you used the looping and heat shrinking method for the strain relief. Kinda taking influence from how the DX Commander is built now. Def eliminates the need for the "ferrules" over the wire and crimping tools and all that stuff. It's cool seeing different takes on solving problems that we experience with our gear out in the field. For me, the heat shrink just doesn't hold up in the Texas heat. That glue just melts so crimping is really my only option for longevity. In the long run though, as much as we use and abuse our gear, as we should, and do, it's nice to see operators come up with different solutions to solving their problems.

Ferrules! Yes, that's the word I couldn't think of. I am wondering how well the simple heat shrink tubing method of holding this all together will hold up over time. But it was a pretty easy project. It is one of the real fun things about this hobby is the opportunities to experiment and be inspired to try something based on others. At the end of the day, if this antenna hack turns out to be a complete failure, I'm out a few hours of time and a few meters of wire. Thank you for watching and all your support, Mike!

@@Scout75PortableRadiototally. If it slipped, the wire could probably still be salvaged, even. You could also potentially knot those stubs together using a figure-8 or very simple interlocking overhand knots, and then heat shrink over that for additional strength on the tension-bearing bits. I think that would work quite well, and the RF would be blind to the tiny knots. There’s a cool video on QRP Lifestyle (a German ham-I think-whose call I am temporarily forgetting; his most recent video was taken on a SOTA in Belgium), and he interfaces cordage and wire with this simple interlocking knot for a linked, balanced dipole (that he happens to orient as a vertical with a sloping counterpoise aka single elevated radial). It’s totally simple but extremely efficient, so I really liked it. 73

Ahh ok. So while it sorta looks like those little stubs between the radiating sections are part of the main, contiguous span, they could theoretically just as easily be cordage. And so the only electrical connections are where the plugs meet. Got it. :) ❤

Yes, the small sections that I attached to the radiating wire were just leftover wire I either trimmed while tuning or had nearby. One could use any cordage they had available. Paracord, bank line, etc.

Interested to see how well your heatshrink holds the wire. My glue lined would not hold on the silicone wire I used. The link strain reliefs came loose after a few weeks of use. Found that silicone sealant inside regular heatshrink worked much better. Have also seen a suggestion to use super glue under the heat shrink.

I am also curious to see how this all holds up over time. My initial use and "testing" so far is promising. But we will see how it goes long term and during the heat of next summer (if it holds up that long). For a lightweight portable antenna like the PackTenna EFHW, one may have to consider the wire to be a "wear item" that is to be replace time to time. Thanks for watching and the great input!

Nice channel, and some good ideas here. I’m not quite clear how you did the interface of the links and the main portion/run of wire, the latter of which carries the weight/strain of the antenna span. Did you twist or solder those shorter stubs together with the main span? Not sure if the question is clear though! It’s not critical that you answer here in the comments, but maybe if there’s an opportunity in a future vid you could show us? Thx & 73!

I used some small diameter heat shrink tubing to hold the pieces together. The radiating portions connect to each other using soldered on "banana plug" style connectors. Thank you for watching!

the maples and poplars are popping right now. Oaks are starting to come around.

Love that roll up pouch…. Where did ya find it ? Thanks
@Scout75PortableRadio

The pouch is a roll up ditty bag from Osprey. They are fantastic and fairly inexpensive. I have a bunch of them for backpacking and radio.

The Osprey roll up pack looks much lighter then the Orvis fly bag I’m currently using. Thanks for some great ideas!

So how did it tune with the wire for strain relief? Any interactions?
@Scout75PortableRadio

I didn’t notice anything with SWR after adding the strain relief. I was getting SWR readings from 1.1-1 to 1.5-1 with the different links scanned at different heights, etc.
