but god, tumblr fandoms are so funny and weird... just the way they work Tiktok also had some onceler cosplayers on it. I wonder how many of those are people who were in the fandom back then and decided to just never leave or if they just discovered it long after it stopped being a thing
I feel like every niche fandom inevitably has to go through the "making characters into sexy edgy hot topic versions of themselves" phase at some point or another. Exhibit A: Sans Exhibit B: Bill Cipher Exhibit C: William Afton/Purple Guy/The Man Behind The Slaughter(If your reading this Misty I deeply apologize for bringing up FNaF)
I feel like it wasn't as bad with Steven Universe, but yeah, Exhibit D: Lapis Lazuli EDIT: Almost forgot about Monika, how could I forget about Monika? Also, I think they did the same thing with Chara.
I was vaguely aware of this ship being a thing on Tumblr years ago, but I had no idea it was a "murder ship", yikes. D: The biggest thing I knew about this ship (before watching this video) is that there's also a Vocaloid song based on it. Or kinda based on it? It's called "Creative" by Creep-P, if anyone's curious and wants to check it out.
oh my god, i still follow the person who made those comics all those years ago.... thats initially why i even followed them..... i knew logically that i wasnt the only one who remembered this, but the material confirmation is infinitely comforting. i think i still have a reblog of those original designs on my blog somewhere deep in my 2014 archive.....
Whenever I see a fandom using non canon names for characters, I run like hell and refuse to interact with anything that isn't directly from the original creators
the brunt of it may have ended within a few months but we never ever fully escaped its impact. if i gave you a nickel for every time someone used the name "paige" to refer to sketchbook, you'd have enough money to buy the usps from the fascist govt and keep it running. what a completely normal sentence that is
to me Sketchbook always felt more like a creepy little kid rather than a grown adult woman, so I like that you draw her as a kid. it gives the teacher lineup more variety. Tony is definitely an adult tho
i'm p much the minority that still loves the ship after 6 years of getting into it ever since then i've changed perspectives and i understand a lot of the madness that happened was p weird personally i still adore the designs and their dynamic but i loved everyone else's different take on it just as much with each new fanwork i don't interact much w the fandom anymore but from what i've last seen everyone's been making ocs and aus while the most popular ship now is colin and tony reading the comments i'm surprised no one else remembers or even knows the clusterfuck that happened and that makes me kinda sad the series will always have a place in my heart along with the ship and i'm not exaggerating that i will keep that love until the day i die
Now obviously we don’t have the hard numbers on this, but given that the DHMIS Kickstarter was kind of a close shave and Katabura made a point of using their platform to draw people’s attention to it there’s a non-zero chance that the rest of Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared owes its existence to the Ultra Sexy Skinny Anime Tim Burton Murder Ship There’s a lesson in that somewhere but if this show has taught me anything it’s that learning is always evil, unambiguously, without exception
oh god I feel like an amnesia patient and you just awakened something horrible within me. I never wanted to remember this happened, how could you do this to me.
I never got why Paige was always portrayed as such a violent gory character. It never really did much outside of be a shit teacher and was genuinely freaked out when the puppets went on their cannibalistic tirade and told them to never do it again.
What a fun little time capsule! It so interesting revisiting this topic after the dhmis tv show has aired. To think that the popular ship would go from humanized padlock serial killer AU to red guy x duck in full puppet glory. Nature is healing.
2:59 "hickory dickory dock im gonna fuck the clock" THAT HAD ME FUCKING CACKLING LMAO WTF Edit :i got further into the video and Jesus. I don't ever wanna be creative again.
Bro, If you go deeper into the ships of dhmis, you’re brain will break. Some are actually really cute and chill. But the HELL of the rabbit whole. You’ll never escape it
I honestly don't know where this pairing came from I think it started out as a joke that Uh... escalated... but yeah I remember this ship growing up and tbh I really liked it (still do) Don't get me wrong it was weird as all Hell but theirs was a certain charm to it that kept me hooked, maybe I liked the their humanoid designs, maybe it's the dark humor, idk but I really loved it and hell I actually found out about dhmis BECAUSE of this ship, I looked up Tony and Paige and I found out about the show, I honestly don't think I would have known about this series if it weren't for these two popping up in my RU-vid recommendations page, and say what you want about this pairing I've seen people do some pretty creative things with these two so it's not all bad it helped the fandom become what it is today and I really hope the new series holds up to the big legacy
Oh god, I didn't know what Wheat-cest was until now, but jesus it sounds uncomfortably similar to Sanscest and now I'm getting flashbacks to the Undertale fandom
And then the fandom decided that Tony and Paige had a daughter, a calendar named June, who was “different” and “didn’t want to be psychopaths like her parents” and “follow her own destiny” bullshit
7:00 by sheer accident i refound the artist who drew the very well known comic of the notepad and clock killing and making out with eachother before i watched this video i did not know it was the artist i just wanted to read their silly passion project webcomic theyve been working on for 12 years which is, fun fact; still going and being worked on which is very cool and i love it a lot its great cool artist then i thought “hey they make cool art, what other art have they made” and then i got flashbanged by my very repressed memories of the padlock ship that i sadly now have to remember
I,, I cosplayed Tony when I was in 6th grade,,,,, so many regrets ._. (Also, I feel like I remember people naming the sketchbook Paige, but I might’ve made that up? I also heard Sketchy a lot tho) Edit: I wrote this comment mid-video lmao, she was in fact named Paige and I am a fool
I WAS THERE OH MY GOD i was 11 years old. i specifically remember watching dhmis in early 2013 and making what was probably one of the first ever sketchbook humans and it was a fun time. then when it resurged a year later with 2 i was so happy. i still have pics of 12 year old me cosplaying that kadabura design
Sometimes I think about how my first introduction to DHMIS was one of those Padlock comic dubs, and I didn't see the actual DHIMS episodes until 2017. This knowledge haunts me.
tumblr sure liked their fancy boys i can't shame them personally i love fancy things but i do agree the clock hands should be a mustache not random face paint also wtf i've heard about the human wheatley designs but i have never once heard about wheatcest
I feel so sorry you had to go though the phase of PADLOCK, and still had to suffer though it in all the years ‘don’t hug me I’m scared’ fandom, I was very lucky to not see this, until late 2016 when the last video of ‘don’t hug me I’m scared’ came out, and I’ll be honest I never really cared about this, it was just a ship, and of course you had to see the horrible outcome of this, and to me it was just a stupid ship, and people who didn’t get a chance to see this amazing puppetry of ‘don’t hug me I’m scared’, when I saw the videos of dhmis, I thought it was so original with a background, the costumes, and of course the puppetry, it was so brilliant and beautiful, you can see the hard work on this, and unfortunately people never got a chance to see it, and really I think no one talks about the details on the art work on this little series,(now being a big one) I mean look at the sewing, the cloth work and the colors on all the characters, I mean look how they did Colin on episode four, they did him so amazing, and how it was all just in simple puppetry work and brilliant animation, you probably won’t see this comment, because we’re all busy because of this pandemic, and I do hope your safe, and I hope you have a lovely time on your cross stitching!~ Aby
I’ve seen it, and I love just talking about about the general art of dhmis, and it was a great video, just hearing someone just enjoying the art and puppetry of dhmis, so thank you for the video about the subject! I really enjoyed it!~ Aby
I had a dream were I commented something like "I remember watching your dhmis videos years ago and now your collabing with this super popular RU-vidr!" I reset my RU-vid channel so that makes me feel like I need to subscribe again
