I was a board-certified pain specialist for much of my career, 50% of my patients were back patients. First thing you need is an MRI to see exactly what you’re dealing with and if you have any peripheral neuropathy. Second thing that you should think about is perhaps some steroid injections. That can give immediate relief of your pain, it will also tell you if it’s safe for someone to give you massage therapy to react the muscles that reflectively going into spasm to protect the injury that you have people have blown discs. This happens as a preservative measure. You can also alternate ice and heat. Anti-inflammatories are helpful as well, but you have to know what you’re dealing with and you likely have blown discs. They do heal themselves in cases without serious intervention, and I seriously suggest against surgery unless there’s difficulty with urination or functions of elimination. Most of my patients were there because of failed back surgeries. Get your advice from the data and from board certified specialist not from RU-vidrs. I had three blown discs similar to what you’re describing and all of them have healed themselves with steroid injections, epidural and trigger point injections to calm the muscles down. Maybe a little PT as well. The yoga suggestion is good once that settles down do not get surgery unless there is absolutely no other choice, and that is when your bodily functions are not under control , remember the reason their muscles go into spasm is to make you stop working because the underlying pathology is not getting a chance to heal. It is unlikely epidurals, RFL, trigger points, massage, therapy, PT and yoga, won’t help you your young active man. This will pass.

You've been mentioning back pain recently, and um, do you do any regular physical therapy, like stretching and stuff? I live in a similar forested environment, and like you I work pretty hard to build the infrastructure and maintain the orchards and all the rest, but every day I've gotta do a fifteen minute stretch routine (no exceptions). You've gotta look after your body, man. Cheers. Chris

8-17-24 As a lifelong back-pain victim, I have been waiting patiently for this fellow to finally succumb to his back pain which this morning it seems he may have as this is the first time in the years I've been watching him mill wood from trees found only on his property then erect structures to show us on Saturdays that this is the first Saturday he has failed to show. I assume he has succumbed to his lower back pain and may even be seeking medical intervention. I hope that this is not the last we see of this gentleman. Wishing him a speedy recovery. This is the 3rd time this year Telling you this. I had the same problem with my back. It's like a knife in your back. Start taking a good turmeric pill. 2 a day until you start feeling normal then take one a day forever. It is great for you because it is high in antioxidants and it will get that swelling out of that area in your back that is causing the pain. It is putting pressure on your nerves and that is the pain you are having. Please trust me I know. I use Qunol brand 1000mg Turmeric

Ryan not sure if you have access to a swimming pool but water exercises are so good for healing the back. I had ruptured discs and they wanted to fuse my lumbar vertebrae. I took a year off and lived in an apartment complex with an indoor pool. Everyday swimming for almost a year. Had another MRI and my back was healed. Steroid injections do work for the pain in some people but not everyone. Maybe initially get a couple and see if they work but don't rely on them long term. I had a Dr at Mayo tell me that they will eventually deteriorate the bone tissue. At any rate hope you heal up soon and get back to what you love to do.

First off, I want to thank you and your miniature mastodon for the great videos every week. As far as your back, I went through the same thing from about 40 years old to 50 years old. At 50 I got a fusion done at my L5-S1, and in that regards It was the best decision ever. What I found that helped me during those years, was what my physical therapist had taught me do, and that was "arches". You lay flat on your stomach, and arch your back, but with leaving your hips touching the ground I did 3 sets of 12, with a minute or two rest between. Those arches, and walking are the only two things that ever helped. Hopefully they can help you. My PT explained it as putting the jelly back in the doughnut lol. Give it a try.

sounds like sciatica, I could be wrong but I've had it for over twenty years now. When the pain happens there is a trick, to ease the pain. I remember it as GOOD DOOR. You go to a door jam or any surface that can hold your weight and place the good side into the door or whatever object and lean to the good feeling side. When you do it stretches the the side that is irritated. There is even videos on RU-vid, Good luck my friend

Ryan, I also have that issue with my back. Do this regularly before the pain gets bad. The best fix I have found is to stand up straight and bend back at the waist and roll from left to right about 5 or 6 times and it pushes the jelly disks back where they belong so they aren't pushing against the nerves. Hope that helps. Found that trick on the u toobs lol Also get a super adjustable belt or suspenders. The pressure of the belt around your waist makes it way worse.

I have had a back injury for over 50 years…and manage it by chiropractic adjustments that put my hips back into the correct orientation. Since you do a lot of lifting, over time the hip will adjust to that motion and one event will cause them I rotate forward or backward a touch…once back in position, within a day or two the muscles will begin to relax and I am back in action…just one man’s experience…but get to a great chiropractic place…Palmer or Logan grad, with 20 years experience…the new Palmer grads don’t know how to adjust like the older grads…yes I have a family member that just graduated…best of luck…

Dogs love to feel safe that's why he goes to the tent. His house will be really nice when done. I"ve had a bunch of mri"s and I don't like them as I'm a big guy and claustrophobic, i dislike going in the tube. Take Care

get a back brace immediately, it needs to become like your new helmet where it feels odd without it

I had back pain for years from herniated discs. I finally started going to a chiropractor on a weekly basis and also got a new mattress. I now have no pain. When your spine is in alignment it makes a huge difference. I’ve had MRI but a simple x-ray will tell a lot to the chiropractor.

Ryan! Please don’t stop your posts. I’m an 84 year old woman and I so look forward to Saturday mornings for them. 😢 I’ll come help you lift the heavy stuff! I live in the Phoenix valley where we have two seasons - hot, and not quite so hot - so I especially like the winter ones. I really hope you will be able to continue. Good luck with your back problems. Cathie

Take care of that back bud. I had a building discussion in the L5-S1 joint that ended up crushing my sciatic nerve really good. First surgery completely failed to fix the problem after 9 months of recovery. Then i had the dreaded fusion surgery. They removed the disc and put a titanium "cage" in there. Don't be afraid of a fusion. It was the best decision to make. And if it wasn't a work comp injury it would've been the first surgery and i wouldn't have missed 5 years of working because it the bs they (work comp) put someone through. My surgeon said I'd never be able to run my saw or lift 50+lbs regularly. If only he could see me now I'm felling trees, milling lumber, splitting firewood, building a house all without help. The fusion was a fear of mine myself, but i has the best surgeon in the San Francisco Bay area. He retired the year after i was released from work comp restrictions

I’m on his Patreon and he doesn’t post very often. Hasn’t posted anything recently. He’s probably just caught up watching cat videos
