I hope this really is a change for Paper Mario and not just a one time thing.

Everyone in the PM community needs to recommend this game to their peers or even buy it for them. The sales needs to be monumental if we want to send a message to Nintendo that this is what we want. I've seens so many reactions of streamers and people with decent following saying they would try the game. As a collective this is now or never to save the series. If TTYD sales poorly this will be a strong goodbye to any hope.

Considering the fact that they're putting out 2 Mario rpgs in such a short time frame, I think Nintendo's doubling down as well. I hope we get a Mario & Luigi revival next so we can triple down.

What I think is super important is that they're going to have an actual modern engine for this formula to reuse for a new game with the same mechanics. Think BotW and TotK. The fact that it appears built from the ground up, the foundation for a third installment in the PM64/TTYD era is there. All they have to do is change character lines, models, maps, badges, etc. and they have a new game. I don't want to get my hopes up to only get disappointed 5 years from now when Paper Mario: Printer Panic releases where the text itself has a font made from real paper being folded and every red toad (all NPCs are red toads) says "I can't believe I got copied!" I've given them too many ideas now...

I will say, it's so nice that people are actually excited for a Paper Mario game for once even though it's a remake. the TTYD remake is huge because it marks a crossroad for the series, will it in fact go back? continue going in the paper direction or will they do a fusion? it all depends if this sells more than TOK.

Please let Paper Luigi: The Marvelous Compass happen after this.

I'm still very much convinced that the Mario franchise as a whole, RPG or otherwise, is in the best state it has ever been in, period. In its ENTIRE EXISTENCE since 1981, there has never been a better time to be a Mario fan. With so many incredible games, both remakes of older titles and entirely new games altogether, coming out, the movie selling beyond anyone's wildest expectations, the insane attention to detail and love and effort being put into all of these games, and just the sheer steps being made to undo over a decade of stagnation regarding major aspects of the series, it's safe to say the Mario Renaissance has truly begun!

I have been watching your deep dives of the tragic downfall of Paper Mario for as long as you’ve been covering it. The whole iceberg is so nuts and goes so deep, but you kept us in the loop. This feels like such a full circle moment! I’m so glad the fans were so vocal and never let this go

I said and posted this heartfelt comment on Arlo's channel, and I'm going to post it here as well, just for good measure. The very fact ALONE that Nintendo saved announcing this faithful HD remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for last just speaks unprecedented volumes of how much they cared about this. This wasn't just an afterthought, they WANTED millions of people to witness this. This truly feels like one of those lucid dreams that you wish was real, and thank you God, it IS REAL. And the icing on the cake is just how much meticulous care and effort was put into this. This wasn't just a copy and paste job, I mean, even if it would've been just a simple HD remaster, I would've been thankful for just that, but no, they went above and beyond with this, they went as far as to make the speech bubble voices (whatever its called) match the character that's speaking. This is a complete overhaul of the graphics, lightning, shadows, and everything in between. The music has been remixed, I mean man, this indubitably shows that Nintendo has been listening. I NEVER would've imagined that they would remake two top tier mario rpgs, those two being Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. And something else interesting that many people may not have noticed, in the outside area of Glitzville over where the super switch is, there's a new toad npc that wasn't in the GameCube version of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and if nothing else convinced/convinces doubters, that right there is a CLEAR indicator that that whole arbitrary and nonsensical ban on unique npcs and characters is gone bye-bye. I don't know if it was the titular and unprecedented success of the Mario movie that sparked this glorious revival or what, but whatever sparked it, I will be forever grateful for this blessing coming to fruition. I had a real good feeling that this was going to happen after the Super Mario RPG remake got announced back in June. We're getting Super Mario Bros Wonder, a Super Mario RPG HD Remake, and a Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door HD remake BACK TO BACK. Nintendo is clearly going back to their creative roots with Mario, and this also shows that yes y'all, they've been listening, we just had to be patient. Just let all of this sink in, this isn't JUST a lucid pipe dream, its a lucid pipe dream come TRUE. And yes, I'm a HUGE Paper Mario fan if it wasn't already obvious lol. Everything is so polished and refined, I mean, it's so much goodness to take in bruh😊💪. Always remember this people, " _No dream is too big, and no dreamer, too small_ ". My summary I put on Twitter the day this dropped: Not only is the existence of a TTYD remake a good sign, but aspects of the remake prove to me that Intelligent Systems is listening and not just giving us a "here, you asked for it, piss off" game. For example, no thick white outlines around characters. EXTRA expressive side characters. Same engine as Origami King, but pulling back on the "everything is cardboard and paper" aesthetic. Etc etc They're putting effort into this and taking specific complaints and comments into account.

We are truly living in a Renaissance for Mario RPGs and I couldn't be happier about that fact. The fact that TTYD got the closing announcement of the direct truly shows that Nintendo is giving this game the same respect that is usually only grants to games made exclusively within the first party studio, and that has ramifications far greater than just this 20 year old game. Nintendo has been very adamant over the last decade that only the platformers and MarioKart, the series' made within Nintendo HQ, are allowed to truly innovate and expand the scope of the Mario universe and all other projects produced in second or third party studios must follow the design template directed by those most recent games. Characters, environments, locales, and designs were all homogenized presumably out of fear of alienating casual gamers who might only have previous experience with the platformers, and while the extent of the rule varied from series to series, Paper Mario was always the one that had to follow to the literal letter. The lack of original creativity was outstanding for all the wrong reasons, and based on the past developer interviews and what we are seeing now the staff appears to have been forced to conceal and cover all the nonsensical orders from higher ups that we may never know the true identities of. The fact that this loosening of a proverbial leash is all happening now, from SMRPG to TTYD is a clear sign that something major has changed in Nintendo's higher management. If original ideas and creativity is being even temporarily embraced from outside Nintendo HQ is a sign that they are curious about experimenting with Mario again like they were in the early 2000s, and we as fans need to support this risk-taking. I would love to see a day where Paper Mario is so well recognized as part of the identity of the Mario franchise that it's original characters, races, and locales are referenced within other Mario spinoffs like Mario Party or MarioKart, or even the mainline platformers themselves, and this is our moment as hardcore fans to make Nintendo certain that this is the right path for Mario. So unless you want Paper Mario to never truly innovate ever again or stand just as tall and proud as the mainline platformers, speak with your wallet now, or forever hold your peace.

Aaand there's the video. The moment the trailer dropped, I *KNEW* that the passionate PM fans were gonna make videos gushing over why TTYD is such a big deal like an elderly person telling a group of kids their life stories. And I am *HERE* for it.

I think this will set a precedent for the Mario series as a whole, it may mean a return to form for a lot of these sub series of Mario. Or not, but definitely the RPG side of it.

Part of me can't help but be glad we had to wait this long, because if we didn't, I don't think we would have seen an explosion of Paper Mario-like indie games like we have in the past few years that is only continuing to build momentum

It would be cool if you could replay bosses in this remake like how Super Mario RPG is doing.

The whole IP protection squad thing gives me the idea for a spoof of Oragani King's plot. Have various characters from the first two PM games dragged off and forcibly made more uniform and generic.

One thing I noticed recently was how the original Paper Mario 64 (and I think TTYD too) had female toads. It's always boggled my mind how the modern Paper Mario games seem to have removed female toads. (now granted I haven't played them, I'm only going based off gameplay videos I've watched...) Especially when Toadette is a recurring character at this point (so it's not like the existence of female toads has been retconned from the series or anything), so we know there are female toads...but apparently in modern Paper Mario games they've all gone missing. It's really, really weird. It feels like the extreme conclusion of the developers not having the freedom to deviate from the cookie cutter models...

Keep in mind that attach rates are more important than raw totals when talking about sales numbers. It’s true that Origami King sold over 3 million, but that’s actually much worse than TTYD sold on GameCube, given that TTYD got to 1.9 million on a system that sold roughly 22 million units. That is an 8.7% attach rate vs. a 2.5% attach rate for TOK. I think that is something that gets lost in the PM discourse. Nintendo saw increased raw totals with SPM and SS after TTYD but that was due to two main factors: 1. There were lots of PM fans after TTYD and the series had a great reputation, so of course more people were going to buy the next games. 2. The Wii had an install base of 100 million, so obviously SPM was going to sell, though its 4.23% attach rate was actually a big step back. SS was an even bigger step back at a 3.3% rate. So, if one looks a little deeper, it’s easy to see the decline of PM after TTYD not just critically, but commercially. Not sure Nintendo ever bothered to look

I am a HUGE fan of the classic Mario RPG games. Started with the original Paper Mario, then moved onto The Thousand-Year Door, and played most of the Mario & Luigi games. While I have never played Super Mario RPG, it looks right up my alley. I will absolutely be supporting this remake as well!! Hope this is a true return to form for Mario RPGs!

Will be really interesting to see what changes they will do for this remake, notably the dialogue. Seeing the computer at the end keep the red eye from the Japanese version vs the blue eye that was changed for international release makes me think they might go with the original Japanese version. Some spoiler's for a character: Particularly for Vivian's gender change background that was removed for the NA release, while keeping the QoL updates and maybe clean up translation errors that were left unaddressed.

Count me in to not only buying Paper Mario TTYD, but also Mario RPG. Even though they're basically remakes & remasters, but I really wanted more games in these veins (as well as the first 3 games of Mario & Luigi series) as they're some of best Mario stories of any formats. Plus, its been years since I played both of those game on SNES and GameCube. Would be high time to relive these incredible experiences once again.

I honestly think this might be the paradigm shift we so desperately wanted lol. I'm like 80% sure they're gonna be making a *true* sequel if this does well which WILL. The placement of this in the direct and the fact that they announced this when Mario RPG hasn't even released yet shows me that Nintendo is willing to let their subgenres compete with each other again

I'm buying it both physically and digitally, and I don't usually do that. That's how much I want to see more games like this, and I say that as someone who has never played the original GameCube version and thought Origami King was perfectly fine for what it was.

I own TTYD on OG GC but I will likely buy this to show my support to Nintendo. If Origami King had TTYD-style combat and levelling, it would have made it a 9.5/10 game for me. Abandoning these mechanics baffles me, and the community backlash is correct. Hopefully this is the first step for Nintendo to start listening.

Hey MarioT, I remember from 2016 when you explained how color splash was heading in the wrong direction and how much you ranged about it. So much happened but we finally have what we wanted for so long 🤝🤝

Since they remade the game, they now have the games foundation on the switch, meaning there's a chance we could get a sequel or another game like TTYD in the future.

My hope is that this isn't just a 1 off thing and this is more of a soft reboot of the series. My dream is that they continue the story from Super Paper Mario but in a TTYD style game

Man.... I just can't wait to play this game like its my first time again. TTYD was my first ever Mario RPG and is still one of my most favorite Mario games of all time. I still remember as a kid playing it for the first time and literally being stuck in Creepy Steeple area for months, trying to figure out how to get past that sliding gate! Then finally realizing the entire time I had to use Vivian to slip under it! Fun times!🤣

I'm so glad that after a decade, Classic Paper Mario is back, but I will say that TOK could go through what 3D World where more people start to look at its pros more often since it was a good game despites it flaws, that's just me

I think another thing showing that Nintendo is making this a big deal is that they have this pinned on their twitter and this is when they have a brand new 2d Mario releasing in a month!

I never got the chance to play this game so I'm grateful a lot you guys were very local about bringing this game back because now people like me can play it for the first time.

I do believe the final part where it shows peach and tec and when tec said teach me to love I think that was Nintendo trying to represent and asking the fans show us the Love of the game which means sales

Honestly, I can be happy with this. Even if they don’t continue with this formula, we still get TTYD remade. That’s already a huge win in my books. I’d love to see this formula continue, don’t get me wrong, but I always told myself if they remade the game, I could let the franchise continue in any way they want and still be satisfied. Still, this is a “book day off of work” game for me, up there with the likes of Smash Ultimate. And I’ve already recommended it to three of my friends who barely played/never played it.

As an M&L fan, it kinda sucks for me since it's feeling like I picked the wrong Mario RPG to fall in love with but I'm glad everyone else winning. Even not being a Paper Mario fan, I have become *well* aquainted with how unhappy fans have been about the series's shifteven with Super and Origami King's positive reception. This remake feels so much like a litmus test that I feel like I need to play it, partly to support the PM fans, partly to see what this seemingly mythical game has to offer and partly (and I mean this in the nicest way possible) to have people stop talking about modern Paper Mario. Like I get the struggle but it feels like I know more about Paper Mario than I should considering I haven't played the series besides the beginning of Super.

I remember finding your channel and subscribing back with Color Splash and all the storys on that with trailer discussing. It felt like back then you was one of the few channels discussing it. This is the good ending now. Feels so nice that this game is also free from the GameCube game scalpers having it over 100.

To those who doubt that this game is actually THAT good, I submit the following: I used to doubt the notion of it being THAT good myself. Then I sat down and watched a let's play of TTYD one day and realised that I was an imbecile. This game blew my mind just watching someone else play it.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to play TTYD even though I never had a GameCube of my own. I watched a lot of gameplays of it and even as a kid I knew it was a great game. Heck, at one point I was practically fixated on the final boss and the location of Chapter 8 (I mean seriously, that Palace is freakin BEAUTIFUL. The Shadow Queen’s got great taste). I’m going to save up money to get this game once it releases.

It really is a big deal! Thank you for explaining it very well. TTYD is a must play game! I’m so happy we’re getting this remake and accessible to those who have not played it yet. They really are in for the pinnacle Paper Mario experience! ⭐️

if this remake performs well and we get a new game with the TTYD formula i hope that they end up reusing EVERYTHING scrapped from sticker star after the e3 2010 prototype

I think people often focus a bit too much on sales. This game does NOT need to sell better than Origami King for the series to make a complete return to form, believe it or not developers are not always maximizing for sales, there's a level of passion there too. As long as the game sells well, whether it sells better than OK or not doesn't really matter. After all, this game isn't being remade because it sold well, it's being remade because it's a massively popular cult classic with massive critical acclaim, as long as it sells well enough and reviews well (which it will, it's TTYD after all) it'll be fine.

I don't think the M&L remakes' more sterilized Toads & Koopa Troop enemies is a result of any modern design philosophy imposed on it, but merely because AlphaDream was financially struggling and so needed to reuse assets wherever possible. I used to think the mandates impacted it but after seeing SMRPG and now this, I don't buy that. And yes, this also means I don't think this remake or SMRPG means unique Toads with hair, mustaches, and diverse genders are going to be in a new title. Nintendo still forces that to be standardized in everything that isn't a rerelease. Toadsworth never appears anymore, but he was still in the M&L remakes, suggesting they allowed the old design philosophy to remain intact in remakes of games made with it. Toadsworth should have been in Peach Showtime but who's by Peach's side instead? Normal Toad. As is the norm since the 2010s.

I STILL can't believe that TTYD is getting a remake after everything this series has been through with technically starting with Super to SS, to CS, to Origami king all the way up to this remake it still mind blowing that this is happening at all and I'm sooooooo happy about it! Now WE NEED to speak with our wallets and buy this game if we want Paper Mario to go back to it classic roots that we originally loved it for, and I REALLY REALLY HOPE this remake sells well enough! This remake success will make or break the future of this series if it actually goes back to it classic roots or not so I can only hope it does well enough for Nintendo and Inteligent systems standards here hoping!

Don’t get me wrong, I am so excited about this remake and I can’t wait to play it. It truly is a dream come true. But I am still so skeptical if this will really mean that Paper Mario is saved. For so long there has been the promise of things improving with the series, but they haven’t. Here to hoping that the next game actually will go back to paper Mario’s roots

It's rather telling that Nintendo saved the reveal of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door's remake for the last thing they showed off in the September Nintendo Direct. Usually those are reserved for big, crowd-pleasing reveals, the kinds of things they can use to end their Directs with a bang. The fact that this was used for that spot indicates that Nintendo recognizes the huge following TTYD has, and let me tell you, this stands in stark contrast to Color Splash's nonchalant announcement during its respective Nintendo Direct, and Origami King being shadow-announced out of nowhere (admittedly it WAS the year that COVID-19 hit the world hard, so kind of understandable given the circumstances). A series that was once and afterthought from Nintendo is now treated as a "big deal", and that, in and of itself, makes me really happy. Of course the question still remains, is this a true return to form for Paper Mario? Will the next installment in this series also be an RPG like this and the first Paper Mario? Will Nintendo and Intelligent Systems internalize what made those two games great and memorable and keep that creativity with future installments? It really is hard to say at this point. Getting TTYD remade in and of itself feels like a miracle, and even if the remake sells well, it still doesn't mean the developers will just ignore it and do what they want anyway; after all, Color Splash's sales were abysmal yet they essentially "stayed the course" in terms of NOT being like the first two games with Origami King. It really is hard to know where their minds are at right now, which makes me want to hear some developer interviews, hopefully as we get to the remake's release date. Still, for now, I'll take this victory lap; even if the future is still relatively uncertain, it's hard not to get excited for this.

I love Origami King and Color Splash, but TTYD and SMRPG are my all time favorite Rpg Mario games. I'm head over heels excited for the remake/remasters of those games and I hope they both do well enough for more RPG games in the future.

I'm currently playing the original TTYD in honor of the remake being announced. I'm excited for it just to find small details that are different and just to play it on the go. As good as this is, however, I already know there's gonna be a lot of infighting between OG fans and fans of the modern Paper Mario games. I hate Sticker Star as much as anybody, but I also like The Origami King. I know that one will never top TTYD, not by a long shot, but The Origami King has its positives and negatives just like any other game including TTYD. But, despite my worry, I'm looking forward to this remake as much as I'm looking forward to the Super Mario RPG Remake.

I really, really, REALLY hope that they add Luigi's story as well either as side content or a full blown DLC, it would make this already legendary level game so much more epic. I pray for it, oh the waffle kingdom...

I never got a chance to play TTYD, so I'm very happy there is going to be a remake. I got introduced to the series through Super Paper Mario which i really really loved as a kid so if TTYD is better then I'm certainly going to get myself a copy

To this day I wonder how much of a say IntSys had on this. I'm partially worried because the one new NPC we see, that purple Toad in Glitzville, might just be the same amount of barebones Toad design changes as the Toads in Origami King (which, tbf, is the best one at doing that compared to its two predecessors), which makes me worried they'll pretend this remaster only happened because "it was all existing material" and thus still not do new games in this style. I also can't help but think maybe it's not even done by IntSys, but either by Nintendo themselves or by another company under the request of Nintendo themselves; likely with Nintendo seeing how much of a bad PR the last three Paper Mario games have received and thus wondering if sales would really increase much if they DID go back. Either way, the one thing that's certain is that it's a litmus test; and I GUARANTEE that *I* WILL pick up both it, Wonder, *and* SMRPG, if it means driving that point home. Maybe even get Showtime as well. I *want* Nintendo to take risks with Mario, to make the Mario world feel alive. (... it's the least I have after abandoning another series)

I think they might have had no choice but to remake it because lots of parts of TTYD do not play well when forced into widescreen.

Nintendo must've knew long time Paper Mario fans have been begging for Paper Mario to return to the RPG formula, so, TTYD as a remake, was put into development. And put as the Direct's final announcement. It doesn't even look like they're heavily censoring it either. The noose in the main square of Rogueport is still there. Flurry still has a big chest (not that I care about that being retained, but it does signal lack of heavy censorship, since Nintendo mainly is family friendly with a few exceptions), there is so many things true to the original TTYD, that has been retained. There are some differences, but the battle system seems to be identical to the original release of TTYD. They didn't shove "modern Paper Mario" aspects into TTYD's remake. We still have many unique characters, no character has that thick white outline for them, the RPG battle system is still the same. Stuff like that. It's disappointing we'll have to wait till next year to get it, but I'd rather wait longer for a more quality release, than have it released soon and being broken. Regardless though, I'm very excited for this remake. I'm already sold on it. I WILL buy it next year. I may have done nearly everything in the original Gamecube release, but I'm open to doing it all over again with the remake.

I believe a lot of Nintendo's actions in recent memory also show that they has a keen eye on Mario RPGs becoming a thing again. The 2 Mario + Rabbids games Even if it wasn't on release, Paper Mario 64 was one of the highlighted games for NSO The moment they announced GBA for NSO, one of the first released games? Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga Super Mario RPG remake Paper Mario: TTYD remake and you can even argue that in some ways, Origami King was trying to break free from the supposed restrictions and wanted to be an RPG. It even had an unused and incomplete EXP function. I wouldn't be surprised if next year or the next console, either the Superstar Saga 3DS remake gets remastered or they announce a remake for Partners in Time since they get weird when it comes to having the original game and the remake on the same platform (same reason SMRPG and Mario vs Donkey Kong aren't on NSO).

One thing that I think would be a neat reference would be a new shopkeeper named Anna, given how much spotlight she gets in Intelligent Systems Fire Emblem games.

Honestly I would love it if they add an option to change the music into the original Thousand-Year door, including boggly woods love that song! 😆
