The Paperboy starring Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman and John Cusack is reviewed by Christy Lemire (AP critic) and Alonso Duralde (TheWrap.com and Linoleum Knife podcast).
See what other critics are saying: www.rottentomat...
A sexually and racially charged film noir from Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels (Precious), The Paperboy takes audiences deep into the backwaters of steamy 1960s South Florida, as investigative reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) and his partner Yardley Acheman (David Oyelowo) chase a sensational, career-making story. With the help of Ward's younger brother Jack (Zac Efron) and sultry death-row groupie Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman), the pair tries to prove violent swamp-dweller Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) was framed for the murder of a corrupt local sheriff. Based on the provocative bestselling novel by Pete Dexter (Mulholland Falls, Rush), The Paperboy peels back a sleepy small town's decades-old façade of Southern gentility to reveal a quagmire of evil as dark as a Florida bayou. -- (C) Official Site

Saw it on Netflix. Completely disturbing. Unsettling. I LOVED Macy Gray as the narrator, and her character's bond with Jack. She was essentially his mother.

It is better than what most reviews said. Great performances. Of course if you are easily offended by anything you shouldn´t watch it.

sanyrub it was amazing. I don’t think it was over-done at all, it’s a movie you really have too watch to understand the feeling you get as you’re watching every scene.

"The Paperboy" is the most disturbing unsettling upsetting unpleasant movie and remains so almost a decade later. Stupidly thinking if I were to see it again I'd be less sensitive to the graphic images that remained, instead of getting used to or changing the perception of what I wanted to forget, I just came away with more that I wanted to forget. It didn't work. What I wanted most in searching reviews was someone to articulate a point to it, a point on which I could rest all the images and then dissolve them. But I've yet to find anyone who talks about the plot, only the lack of one or its disorganized frantic or hectic sense that one will show up eventually. I agree with the review here that it’s 2 separate movies that a better job would have brought together. The book I looked up was 'based’ on a true story yet it's not considered non-fiction which means there once was a rotten racist sheriff in the South who murdered without consequence until his last victim, a white man whose family lived in a swamp and whose family retaliated by beating the sheriff to death. But the accused didn't get a fair trial so a newspaper editor's son and companion come back home and begin to investigate the case …. with some help tagging along. Nobody wins, the bit of affection I felt went to Nicole Kidman’s character. I wanted her to have a happy ending. Why did the misery in this movie have to be done so effectively as to leave such disturbing images behind without any plot on which to make sense of why I witnessed it all … Reminding me of what I learned only recently, that there's a physiological reason why women (in general) are less prone to violence, less likely to inflict pain on another human being and most often repulsed in witnessing it, that it's the hormone in us called estrogen and not simply some squeamish conditioning, it all made sense. That testosterone in men has the opposite effect (in general) makes me wonder how long it will take to see a world where all leaders are female can bring a world free of war. A nice thought. Better than thinking about this movie.

Great ramble. You want an answer? Because a lot of the time violence doesn't have a "point" or "reason"... Hilary was psychotic, controlling, violent and jealous. Charlotte was slutty, promiscuous and uncontrollable- _that's_ why he killed her. The only unanswered question was whether Hilary actually killed the sheriff, which doesn't make the movie bad. How many murder cases are unsolved in real life? You'd rather watch a movie about a woman president bringing "world peace" 😂 yeah, I'm sure Hilary would have brought us there. 🤣 Women aren't violent or conniving at _all_ 🙄 most women advocate to kill their own child, but keep living in lala land.

Had to watch this review in 2022 because I just now watched this film. It was a crazy story and the way it unfolded was insane. Lots of drama! And the acting was too notch.

*Old man voice* Back in my days games were real. We didn't have the options to save, so we had to beat it all in one sitting our start from the being. *Coughs*.

I loved Shadow Boxer. Great movie with very weird things going on, but in a believable way. Precious was a distant second to it in how interesting the story was.

If there is going to be a movie named Paperboy. It better be about a boy throwing papers while riding a bicycle.
