He wants the judge to make a comment about just that. That would instantly become a mistrial. If the judge acknowledges what he did as fact before the verdict, the lawyers will say the judge is biased and has a pre-determined agenda. I watched the entire trial, the entire thing available live I watched, it was horrific. It moved me to tears many times. They had people tell these parents with photos of their children's heads being blown open and the carnage it did to their bodies/brain. Highly, highly detailed retellings of the conditions of their bodies when given an autopsy. This back and forth happened because one of the fathers of the victims (he's an attorney) went off on them for representing the shooter ect. Its since downward spiralled. Its alleged the defence lawyers are doing this to rile up the judge so they can get a new trial.
JCP has a really good analysis video on this guy's interrogation when he was pretending to be insane saying things like "I see demons!" And "An evil voice told me to shoot them"
The fact that a trial is going like this when it's about the brutal and horrific deaths of innocent children disgusts me. Like humans are the most terrifying creatures on the planet
Trial watching culture and trend as a whole is probably one of the better things that happened in this decade. People are unironically interested in upholding the justice system all over the western world. The only bad thing I can see in coming from this is politicisation of courts.
The thing that charlie is saying with the lawyers laughing with the shooter is that, "The lawyers have to defend him, but they don't have to like him" His lawyers are showing that they a being buddy buddy with a school shooter and enjoying his company which is concerning
The “venom” the defense was talking about was rhetoric from the parents/victim statements. They kept hounding on the defense for the unprofessionalism.
Well, at least this vermin gets to breathe the same air as us for the remainder of his natural life. That would be considered a win in their book. Good job jury for ruining it for everyone.
Honestly this, the only reason I’d never consider being a public defendant is because I can’t bring myself to try to wrongfully free someone like this. I can only imagine the pain that the families afflicted are undergoing and even the concept of this guy getting off easier than the worst punishment seems insulting.
Bad take. Especially when phrased that way, as if their continuous behavior is excusable. There was obviously a defense, whether it was good or bad is subjective, but there was one.
No. There is no defense. They should still hold decorum to ensure that at the very least the families won’t have to suffer a mistrial or some such. They deserve respect even if their client is a scumbag.
Nobody should be defending this. It doesn't matter if they don't want to be there or they're stressed. There is an expectation that they act professional in a court of law. If you don't understand that, you have no business being an adult, let alone commenting on someone's professional conduct. These people were making a mockery of the trial, and for what? To get a mistrial, at best? They are legally and morally required to defend the defendant to the best of their ability... ethically. But intentionally aiming for a mistrial by trying to get the judge mad goes beyond responsibilities as a lawyer and, at best, is trying to benefit from a high profile case. Even if they did get a mistrial, it would just start the process over again. There was no winning here, so the least they could do was have some respect in such a terrible case. But no, they were laughing with the *school shooter* like he was their friend. This right here is the reason so many people think lawyers are terrible people, and that defence lawyers are self-serving scumbags.
The most I saw was people saying "the judge was so unprofessional for yelling and claiming they threatened her children" which is such an obvious contrarian double standard given the context.
What is the point of the defendant wanting a mistrial? I could see the lawyers wanting to get more money, but why would the shooter? As you said, it's just delaying the inevitable. More time in county jail? Is that even that much of a benefit to them?
Like with any school shooting the trial should be whether or not the shooter leaves the courthouse to prison for life, or put immediately into death row. Any legal team disrespecting the judge should be kicked out and their licences revoked and their client receives maximum penalty. Especially when it's all recorded.
He's already gotten his sentence, 1, the penalty phase of trial is over, that happened a few weeks back now. He got life in prison. 2. That idea is ridiculous because of how easily it'd be misused. 3rd. given that legal representation is a right of the client and can be assigned if you cannot get it yourself. how on EARTH can you expect a client to be held accountable for their lawyers behavior like that. plenty of people already get screwed by bad public defenders let alone if they could just get punished by proxy because of bad representation in RULE. not everyone on trial is guilty, thats the whole point of a trial. fck.
@Lol Lol Two reasons; its the trial wrap up, the verdict is the clippable part for news coverage that is typically followed, but there's also the core thing that you can even hear going on in the clip. The victims have a chance to speak to the defendant in what's called a "victim impact" statement. While many of these people were people who testified on the stand, an impact statement isnt being offered for the jury in their decision so its done after the fact. What the defense attorney is upset about is the fact that in these impact statements they're issuing threats to their families specifically because the defendant got life instead of the death penalty. The judge and prosecutor didn't have a hand in them, though, but there's other mess in the trial going on that's led to a generally hostile environment between the two parties (state, defense) and the judge.

Also to everyone saying “oh they want a mistrial so their acting out” no they do not. Nikolas Cruz already plead guilty. Prison isn't that bad. Sure, it isn't as good as being free, or even fun at all really, but it isn't constant torture or anything like that. You can still watch some tv for a little bit, read some books, do workmanship tasks, write books, draw art, etc. In fact, I would say that prison is actually a step up in quality of life compared to about half my childhood was.
