Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, killing more people each year than alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murder and suicide combined. Follow health policy expert Mitch Zeller into the murky depths of the tobacco industry as he details the sordid history of nicotine addiction -- and invites us to imagine a world where policy change helps stop people from becoming addicted in the first place.

I also started smoking early and grew up with both parents smoking heavily. I'm 32 now. I'm already showing the early signs of COPD. I get chest pains and find it hard catching my breath sometimes. My teeth are yellow. I'm a ex prescription drug and IV Heroin user and honestly it seems tobacco has done more lasting damage then everything else combined. It's hard for me to wrap my head around that sometimes.

They deliberately add all those other chemicals to create the addiction way worse than nicotine.... but I was able to quit very easily.... but I will tell you this , before I quit , most of the cigarettes I smoked in the last 6 weeks were probably only by the brand called American Spirit which doesn't really have all those chemicals . But I was still up to about a pack and a half sometimes two packs a day . I was able to quit cold turkey.. I was only craving for about 4 days , and I did not use the patch or the gum . There is a product that is very cheap and has been used for hundreds of years in and around India : NONI powder... you may have heard of Noni juice which can be pretty damn expensive at the health food stores but the powder is much cheaper if you get it at an Indian Grocers . It's also called Indian Mulberry . I was originally taking it because it makes the skin on your face feel like a baby's bottom . There is a short animated film here explaining how it helps kill addictions to opiates alcohol and nicotine . It is on the Balu Kudroli channel . It's called something like "Indian Mulberry :the most powerful healing medicinal plant on Earth" Please try to check it out and good luck with that .... I know that's why I was able to quit so easily and didn't understand why at the time

They've tricked you into thinking nicotine is more addictive than it really is. There's a lack of research on nicotine and it's effects, both positive and negative, on people. Big tobacco is still around and I heard(though this may be wrong), that _they_ are the ones running these "anti-tobacco" campaigns. I don't know where I was going with this but you can literally quit whenever you want and be fine after a day or two.

So far it's been deemed pretty safe as long as you don't use anything cheap. Probably the main issue is oil getting in the lungs from bad quality products. However smoking anything in general isn't wise. Doesn't matter what it is. Yet people do it. I smoke cigs despite being in the health industry. Knowing damn well what it'll do to me. Same with people who use too much salt and sugar. They know exactly what it's doing to their veins and body in general yet they do it. I have noticed that demonizing smoking has made it only more appealing to those who wish to be "different". To rebel is to deviate from the norm and especially young people are doing this. Even if cigarettes were banished from existence, they'd find something else. They always do.

Smoking (the danger) is something I rarely think about... I know how I am. I don't consider problems until they're serious. When it's serious, I'll probably be in big trouble with no chance to solve. Just being honest.

So my question is why do you have to be 21 to bye nicotine quitting products such as gum, patches, and cough drops. Kids want to quit but don’t have the resources. People who were able to bye nicotine products 4 weeks ago can no longer bye there ecigs so they have decided to quit but don’t have access to these products designed to help them quit.

This is one of those small (but important) things that I am jealous of Americans. You were consistent enough to damage your smoking lobby to make it the unreasonable and undesirable selfharm that it is. Sadly we are very far from it in Germany. The youth is getting it more or less and is far less affected - but concerning a huge part of the adults (especially women) we are basically waiting for them to naturally die and free the cities from all the smoke.

My first experience with nicotine was after I had not slept for 2 days and I chewed some nicotine gum, I think it was 2 mg of nicotine. It woke me way up and then some and got me through the rest of the day feeling great. I continued using it a few times after that with gum and nicotine inhaler which worked great and then I stopped using for a few months but when I started using nicotine again my experience was not the same as it used to be. I'd use the same 2 mg that I used before but I got very sick. I got a nicotine spray and I use just a tiny bit and I feel it but it wears off after only 15 minutes. It's like my body became way more sensitive to nicotine to the point where I can't even use it effectively. Before I could take 2 milligrams and it work for several hours but now I can only handle probably less than half a milligram and it only works for 15 minutes. The feeling isn't even the same. Why did this happen?

Hi, I understand your suffering and I'd like to help you by telling you, listen carefully, you should no quit because of how you really want to, you should quit by changing your view of cigarette. I know you're probably thinking, well I already know cigarette is a piece of poison but i'm also pretty sure you really enjoy many moments where you smoke, it's your little pleasure of the day. If you quit with the thought that's it's super hard and it's a sacrifice and you will miss it, well you will. Any time you'll see someone smoking you'll feel like he's Lucky and this will probably make you smoke again if you ever succeeded to stop. Change your view completely about the cigarette, and see quitting not as Something very hard that will make you suffer but as a fun challenge. Create yourself a new Identity, maybe a sportsman or a healthy person who like personal development, but never see yourself again as a smoker and Don't identify yourself with smoker people or groups. Replace moments in which you enjoyed smoking with Something else like drinking a tea or watching a ted talk or little workout. I hope I helped you and other people maybe who might read this comment

Sounds all nice and dandy, doesn't it? Well, you've been fooled. The FDA is currently preparing regulation for the US that includes a costly application process for "tobacco products" which includes e-cigarettes. The cost per application are so high, that nobody except for large corporations will be able for afford them. In other words: The FDA is in the process of handing over the e-cigarette market in the US to the tobacco corporations while doing f*** all do get combustion cigarettes of the market. The e-cigarette markets consists of a multitude of companies from small mom and pop shops to store chains to distributors and large (Chinese) manufacturers. They've been a counterweight to big tobacco for the last 10 years, driving smoking rates down and offering smokers a safer alternative. Now most of them, especially the US entrepreneurs will go out of business if the FDA follows through with their plans, which effectively re-establish a monopoly for big tobacco and big pharma. The FDA is not fighting big tobacco, they're their partners in crime. If you're interested in more background information, I'll write another paragraph or two below: First of all, let's note that Nicotine by itself is no more addictive than caffeine and this is a scientifically proven fact. You've probably thought all your life that Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. This statement is based on studies conducted in the early last century and that only utilized tobacco/ smoking products. Smoking is indeed highly addictive, because it delivers the drug faster and in higher doses than any other means of delivery like patches, gums and e-cigarettes. Further, let's note that the deadly part about smoking is combustion. "Smokers smoke for the nicotine, but they die from tar." Any method of delivery that doesn't utilize combustion therefore eliminates these risk factors. This is why e-cigarettes have become so successful and smoking rates have been plummeting ever since they've been introduced. And While Mr. Zeller describes them as "not a harmless product", neither he nor anyone else so far could prove that they're harmful. In fact, countless studies and experiments suggest quite the opposite. It is true, that young adults experiment with e-cigarettes these days, because that's what teenagers do. 20 years ago teenagers experimented with regular cigarettes which doomed many of them to a life as a smoker. Now we know that e-cigarettes are way less harmful and way less addictive. Hence, it's just unlikely that they'll suffer the same fate teenage smokers suffer. Zeller blows this out of proportion while ignoring the great contribution to public health e-cigarettes have made. Ask any ex-smoker who's transitioned to ecigs how they feel. What their doctors say about their health.

@@HeretiCflow I know you are right, anyone who has quit smoking this way knows it. But do you remember where you saw the information about the legislation under way? The last thing I heard, they were just going to stop sales of flavored pre-prepared disposable units (e.g. "pods" etc.), not bottled juice for the mod/tank-style vape devices. I don't even buy those; I mix my own from scratch, purchasing the base/nicotine liquid, flavoring drops, and sweetener from an online company (United States). I find it hard to imagine the government going so far as to ban adults-only sales of ingredients like that for personal use. Yes, they do go to such lengths for ingredients needed to make meth, LSD and ecstasy, but they don't simultaneously allow privately-owned companies to make those drugs and sell them at your corner bodega either. In other words, I don't put it past the heavily-lobbied federal government to make vaping some level of "more difficult" for consumers, and I've no illusions about the 'why' of it, but I'm not yet cynical enough to think they'll go full-on blatant hypocrite about it.

@maxrupo
@maxrupo 4 года назад
I don't think so, given that every year there are 80 to 84 millions more people in the world. Actually, energy, soils, water, and other resources needed to feed the tobacco industry, alongside those needed to give health assistance to the dying smokers before they die, and to give health assistance to the smokers who do survive, more than offset for the people dying (thus not consuming anymore), in terms of emissions and resource depletion. I guess the only sound thing to counter overpopolation is women empowerment. And, of course, condoms.
@mcgeufer
@mcgeufer 4 года назад
@@maxrupo Frankly that was just a cruel joke. By the way, the whole overpopulation thing is by far not as bad as the media tells us. The current numbers point rather in the opposite. While we are still raising a bit it's not like in the 50s and 60s anymore. In fact, if the development continues like this we will become fewer people in just a few decades. Some countries like Japan have already a decreasing population. Many more have a "too-small" birth rate but keep growing because of migration. Still, there is one big problem left, our capitalistic economy needs more and more consumer since it seems to work like a pyramid scheme. I guess for now it keeps working since they manage to make more and more products that break or become obsolete in a few years because of a new model.

You can't realistically think that you can create a zero nicotine cigarette without there also having black markets suddenly pop up for high potency tobacco. Keep it regulated and taxed, and simply continue to educate the public on the dangers. Countries like the US still have flashy packages and menthol flavours, although some countries are starting to put more warning labels and stuff on the packages to warn the consumer.

I quit smoking in 2001. It was the 18th of November, a Sunday morning. Best decision of my life. In my opinion quitting cold turkey and really persisting is the best way to quit. Cutting down May seem like a good alternative but you keep feeding your body nicotine. And I really think your mind and your body Benefit a lot more when you actually manage to overcome your own cravings. And I’ve heard all the excuses, and that’s exactly what they are... excuses. Just quit, it’ll be the best decision of your life
@Cerbyo

This idea that going cold turkey is attractive or smart or masculine or romantic or an accomplishment or good in some way....is unfortunately quite wrong. You can damage ur body severely going cold turkey (the nerves in particular). In other words that backlash u attribute to "having smoked or whatever for tooo long" after being clean for so long.....is likely partly just due to the fact u quit cold turkey. Going cold turkey is pretty much akin to waterboarding urself.....Sure it looks harmless...sure u look fine afterwards....the fact tho, that u effectively shocked ur body into killing its own braincells. So I guess it is masculine, since cutting ur own arm off and boasting about it is...masculinity at its core.
@funnylookingfoetus

@@Cerbyo I believe it was the right thing to do for me. I don't think there's anything masculine about it at all, although I can understand you may perceive it that way. I am certainly no expert and in fact know very little of the impact it has had on my body, and I honestly never heard or read anything suggesting it may have damaged brain cells. But perhaps there's some irony in that? ;) What I do know is that right now I have successfully managed to stay off cigarettes since that day. I am proud I managed to do so, since there's plenty of things in life that I have struggled with. Perhaps your claims are true, but to me it feels rather dismissive (it's masculine to quit cold turkey, so therefore bad?) , backed up by claims without a proper source (quitting addiction cold turkey supposedly causes damage to your nerves/brain cells)

Most smokers don't want to be smokers/never wanted to be, but they just can't quit. So if we would stop the advertising, marketing and selling of cigarettes (or maybe reduce the selling of it over the course of 10 years) and get it out of the culture, no non-smoker would actively try to get started, especially if it involves illegal activities.

He intends to ruin a consumer product. I used to smoke, i quite out of choice, and for this reason he have to respect peoples freedoms and liberties. Moreover, i would further suggest that this create an illegal market for tobacco (Reference: 2019 Australia), this un-intened consiquence will create more immediate public health concerns, and in turn total deaths, and easier access for minors. The war on TABACCO BEGINS, what happened to freedom of choice? nicotine is the most powerfully additive substance known to man, worse than opiates. Cigarette taxes are horrific because daddy will have his nicotine before the kids get bread. Most addicts nowadays are poor. Need to have a system where an adult can become a registered addict. Only with the card can he/she buy tobacco products. Each and every pack of cigarettes would have a unique serial number printed along the length of each cigarette. When product is purchased computers would record registered addict's number and pack serial number are recorded. If under age person is found smoking the unsmoked cigarettes in their possession would trace back to who made the purchase. Heavy fines or jail would follow. A bit Orwellian but one solution.
